Barnes was among Morphy's first opponents when he arrived in London in late June 1858. According to Frederick Edge who functioned as a kind of a traveling secretary for Morphy, Barnes and Morphy were on an even score after the first 10 or 12 games. Morphy then won the last 8 or 10 in a row. They played 26 games and there were no draws!

This is an important point people don't understand about Morphy. You can't point to any hole in his game. People look at the over all score instead of the reality that Morphy figured out all his opponents and after that, he could win every decisive game against all of them. Anything he didn't understand about chess, he would figure out within a few games.
@Callipygous1975
@Callipygous1975 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is often pointed out that Morphy had poor starts against Harrwitz and Anderssen before going on a winning streak. Mr. Edge reported that Morphy, after his second loss, told him that Harrwitz would not win another game. Against Barnes, there is speculation that Morphy who physically was not a very robust person was suffering somewhat from his first ocean voyage. Then, after a week or so, he began rolling through his opponents in greater numbers.

More Barnes Trivia (courtesy Wikipedia): “A variation of the Ruy Lopez opening called the Barnes Defence was named after him: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 g6 (this is also sometimes known as the Smyslov Defence). A much more dubious variation named for him is Barnes Defence, 1.e4 f6 which he played against Anderssen and Morphy, beating the latter. Barnes Opening, 1.f3, also bears his name. Opening with the f-pawn served his preference to sidestep existing opening knowledge.”

Morphy CRUSHED the best players of his time, taking chess as a childhood past time... retiring at 13 after smashing Lowenthal, coming out of retirement at 20 to kill time and show the chess world who was boss, he studied and played little chess by any chess master standar and so was at the BEGINNING of his true chess potential, yet was essentially invincible... as Anderssen himself said so... yeah the greatest chess genius in history

Keep in mind that this game was played well before modern chess theory and yet Morphy and Barnes intuitively played modern chess, at least for the most part. Remember, it wasn't until Steinitz codified modern theory and Lasker's further development of modern ideas that made this video's analysis possible. Great job and great video!

At 2:45, why doesn’t black justpush g5 followed by g4 to capture a piece? Can’t figure it out
@jestice75
@jestice75 6 жыл бұрын
Queen won't move, probably just capture G5 with one of the knights, and again with the other knight once the first knight is captured. This would leave his king pretty naked. Knight is generally worth 3 pawns, so Morphy would have only gotten 2, but they were important pawns to shield the king. I wouldn't make that trade.
@jestice75
@jestice75 6 жыл бұрын
Or maybe you'd have to recapture the second pawn with the queen and trade queens to keep from having the bishop from pinning & winning the knight.

Great game. It's so easy for use to real off theory after Nimzovitch and others put it into words, but to put ourselves in Barnes shoes to understand all this without books or examples is quite a feat. Ok, at 2:43, where he moves his knight back to F3. Why isn't black's next move to move the g6 pawn forward 1 to attack the queen, then he has to move the queen away, and then moves that pawn 1 forward to attack both knights at the same time? Why not that? Granted if instead of moving the queen out of the way, white just outright takes the pawn with a knight, he'll get 2 pawns for his knight, it still looks like that would be pretty good for black.
@Valbz0r
@Valbz0r 7 жыл бұрын
g5 Nxg5 (either of them) hxg5 Nxg5 and white has two pawns for the knight and a strong attack on the king, you can check individual variations with an engine since they excel at tactical positions. Stockfish gives White a small advantage and either way it's a dangerous position, pretty uncomfortable to play for a human so Barnes chose a slightly better endgame instead

The game started 1. e4 f6 2. Nf3 e5 at which point in the post mortem I said that I thought a good move for white was Nxe5 and I was very surprised when all the strong players instantly disagreed with me.
