Newman is filming the Color of Money where he would win an Oscar for the following year. He and Fonda are the only ones to my memory to win an Oscar after receiving an honorary award.

Actually, in the early years of the Oscars, Honorary awards were also given out for work done in 1 specific film instead of a body of work. If those are included among those who won Honorary BEFORE winning a Competitive one, the list would extend to include the likes of Frank Sinatra (who won an Honorary Award for THE HOUSE I LIVE IN (1945) before winning Supporting Actor for FROM HERE TO ETERNITY(1953)); Sir Laurence Olivier (honorary Award for HENRY V(1946) before winning Best Actor for HAMLET(1948)) and more. However, if you limit it to just Lifetime Achievement Awards before competitive win, then I believe only 5 people have done it: the aforementioned Paul Newman and Henry Fonda, as well as: Charlie Chaplin (who won 2 Honorary Awards (one for THE CIRCUS (1928) and the other for Lifetime Achievement(1971)) and an Original Score Oscar for LIMELIGHT(1972); the film LIMELIGHT actually released in 1952, but due a technicality was eligible in 1972 film year (1973 ceremony) instead) Ennio Morricone (Honorary Oscar in 2006 followed by Original Score win for THE HATEFUL EIGHT(2015)) Cecil B DeMille (Honorary Oscar in 1949 followed by a Best Picture (producing) win for THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH (1952) (in fact, DeMille received the Irving Thalberg Award and the producing Oscar that same night, a feat that only Saul Zaentz has achieved since (Saul won the Thalberg the same night he won for THE ENGLISH PATIENT(1996)))).

Spike Lee pulled that off recently too! He won an Honorary Oscar in 2015, and an Adapted Screenplay Oscar for BLACKKKLANSMAN (2018) after that.

You can add Hayao Miyazaki to that list too! Miyazaki is the only person ever to win competitive Oscars both before AND after the Honorary win. He got the Honorary Oscar in 2014, with the competitive wins being for SPIRITED AWAY (2002) and THE BOY AND THE HERON (2023).

The others being Cecil B DeMille, Charlie Chaplin, Henry Fonda, Ennio Morricone, Spike Lee, and Hayao Miyazaki (Miyazaki has the distinction of being the only person to win competitive Oscars both before AND after the Honorary Oscar).

Newman should have won competitive best actor Oscars for The Hustler and for Hud, in 61 and 63, respectively. Ironically, he did ultimately win the following year for his re-creation of the Fast Eddie Felson character in Scorsese's The Color Of Money. His last nomination came for a marvelous performance as a patriarch in Mendes' The Road To Perdition, which first brought Daniel Craig to the attention of moviegoers.

Paul Newman was one of my favorites. He made the best decision NOT to attend the oscars. The naysayers the joke is on you and they are the laughing stock. Paul was mature in staying home when winning the Oscar 30 years ago. Rest in Peace.

Paul Newman's last film was Cars where he did the voice of Doc Hudson and television film Empire Falls in which he won the Golden Globe. 9 months later that same year, Paul Newman was deceased.

He didn't 'snub' it, although who can blame him if he did. He was actually filming, Harry and Son, in Florida, at the time of the oscars. A film in which he also directed. Paul should've got several; Hud, Cool Hand Luke and The Verdict. At the minimum!
