Paul Pierce and Kyle Lowry's last-second battle to determine who's going home needs a deep rewind

The 2014 Nets and Raptors had a lot in common! They both have a history of terrible records. They both started the year in an embarrassing fashion. And they're both facing elimination in the first round of the playoffs. Seeing as how it's at each other's hands, I don't think they'll be bonding anytime soon.
And besides, their differences are more defining. The Nets spent lavishly to boast one of the best (in theory) rosters in the league. Their starting 5 at the beginning of the year was Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Brook Lopez. That's 5 all-stars.
Whereas the Raptors have a quiet payroll that supports one all-star (DeMar DeRozan), a bunch of young guys, and a point guard who was their second choice and they tried to trade away. (Kyle Lowry)
To find out how these similar but different teams got this win-or-go-home battle, we have to rewind.

The Nets would make a fascinating collapse episode. Their all-in push fell apart and gift wrapped the Celtics their core of Tatum and brown, and when they managed to get a big 3 of KD Kyrie, and Harden, it only lasted 16 games and they had to blow it up too.

That 13-14 Raptors squad really became the foundation for everything we eventually became in ‘19: - Greivis Vasquez turning into OG & Norm - JV turning into Marc Gasol - T-Ross turning into Serge - And of course, DeMar and Poeltl (who was also a 1st rounder from the Bargnani trade) turning into Kawhi and Danny Green Thanks for this bittersweet rewind

This is a tough block to watch, but man… seeing Kyle break out in 2014 to become the East’s most well-rounded PG for a 6 season stretch that ended with a ring was great, and now he’s the savvy vet proving he’s still got stuff in the tank ala Pierce here.

@@GuntherBovine I mean, yeah… if you want to make the obvious “thicc” joke, it’s on the table. But Kyle’s game was well rounded. He could drive to the rim & get buckets alongside foul calls. He became a better three point shooter. His defence got better off-ball, picking the lane for steals & putting his body on the line by taking charges. Lastly, he elevated every player he played with, something he’s still doing now in Miami these playoffs. His intensity & mentality rubs off on other guys & they all buy in. He was the leader in 2019. Kawhi was just a fun guy who needed Kyle as much as Kyle needed him.

It was because their Russian owner back then bought the team and mandated that they would win a title within 5 years. This matchup came in year 5. Demar Lowry Era , The start of having a playoff run with Dwayne Casey as their head coach , moretheless their playoff run was nothing about getting Eliminated by Lebron James at the East Finals , Or Semi Finals. Masai knew that firing Casey and Trading Demar was their good choices , since Demar is nowhere being good at the playoffs . Likewise , i'll give my efforts on Masai trading Jonas for Marc Gasol. He deserved that championship , and Ibaka aswell , he also deserved it. Facing against 7 games , a do or die series from the Superteam Nets and the Young Raptors , Pierce made the clutch winning block against Lowry and faced the miami heat. But , this team was old and can't make a deep playoff run with their worst trade ever .

I did not remember that Toronto set up on the wrong side of the court with no timeouts to adjust on the final inbound play. That was a major error by Duane Casey. He did a great job developing the young Raptors players but unfortunately had a few too many coaching errors in the playoffs.
