My favourite story about the Sterling-era Clippers comes from Keith Olbermann's old ESPN show from 2014: "I've been on Donald Sterling's spitlist since 1986... I was the sports director of the LA station that carried their games, and I had the nerve to criticize them. Sterling first tried to get me fired; when that didn't work he had his team president ban me from games & practices. As a postscript at the bottom of my letter of banishment was a note directed to then-GM Elgin Baylor: 'PS', it read angrily, 'Elgin: Make sure he is also removed from our mailing list for press releases!' Starting the next week I began to receive _two_ copies of every Clipper press release. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about this rot-gut franchise, I don't know what will!"

It was known more or less that Sterling was racist - but before this final row over Magic Johnson, he was on his way out of being the worst owner in the NBA. He'd finally managed to put together a winning team when he traded for CP3 and then hired Doc Rivers. And for once, he was beginning to look like a good guy, speaking nicely even to some difficult players, all the while his team began putting up winning season after winning season. And then it all came undone when he railed against "black people," although he's right about Magic Johnson's private life being a bad example.

My grandfather was a real estate investor/developer in LA and had a home meeting with Sterling, probably around '85 or '86, and couldn't stop commenting on what a creepy guy Sterling was. They did not do any business together.
@aaartnaz3 жыл бұрын
Don’t recall where I heard this but it is a fact Sterling and Laker owner at the time, Jerry Buss were good friends. Jerry reached out to Sterling apparently to buy the Lakers and that never happened. Sterling, like any other rich man, realized what he missed out on and that’s how he ended up buying the Clippers. I even remember when their media announcer Ralph Lawler mentioned in one of his last games as their employee on convincing Ralph to not leave giving him the wait till next year bargain. I remember going to Clipper games just to see the visiting teams when they still had a contract to play at the Sports Arena in South Central but I even as a young teen felt that mediocre environment and the lack of taste of the experience. Definitely not a worthwhile memory for me plus the security and ushers weren’t friendly and below standard. I say that cause I asked when the horn sounded if I could go down and ask for autographs and the guy, an old guy who I could tell had been there since before I was born with his just as old baby blue clipper jacket denying me. As far as I remember, the Clipper franchise was the only one that wouldn’t let me in the box seat area after the game for that reason. Yeah, the fans matter buddy.

Even without those racist comments, Donald Sterling should have his ownership being stripped or taken away because the Clippers was an epitome of the one of the worst teams in four major pro sports in the USA & definitely the worst franchise in the NBA. As soon as he was gone, the Clippers have become at least respectable organization with playoff regulars, something was unheard during the Sterling era.

It's also something a non-racist would say. What matters are the actions. Hell, many Innocent people say they are too. I've seen many cases where people accused of crimes say they're innocent, and then are proven to be just that in court. (and yes, I'm speaking of my poor associates who didn't have fancy lawyers to get them off, but sweated it out).

@@paysonfox88 actually no, in this case someone who was not a racist would say something else. If someone says something horribly bigoted and then says they're not a bigot it shows they are such bigots they can't even understand what they did wrong. In essence doubling down. Someone who wasn't racist would have a explanation for why they said something racist. Here's an example "hey person A I have a recording of you saying something racist" person A "you are absolutely right that those words are racist and even though there's context that mitigates what I said, I still shouldn't have said it." If instead they said "despite these recorded words and actions of me being racist I don't think I did or said anything racist because I'm not racist" you know they're super racist. You're welcome for helpful life advice for spotting racist idiots!
