The Warriors hated Chris Paul for a decade ... then he joined them

When Chris Paul joined the Golden State Warriors in 2023, everyone agreed that was … pretty weird. On its surface, the reasoning there is obvious: opposition. Stephen Curry’s Warriors won a bunch of championships in the 2010s, and they all came at Paul’s expense in one way or another. Paul fell short of individual accolades because Curry surpassed him as an elite point guard, and Paul’s teams in Houston and Los Angeles fell short of glory because Golden State was better.
But it’s not just rivalry. Paul joining the Warriors is also weird because of beef. The rivalry between Curry and Paul is complicated by the fact that Curry followed in Paul’s footsteps, and saw him as a mentor. It’s further complicated by the fact that Warriors like Draymond Green pushed on Curry to subvert that relationship and use it against Paul. And… it’s definitely complicated by the fact that, when the Clippers eliminated the pre-dynasty Warriors from the playoffs in 2014, Paul was involved in a postgame fracas wherein someone mocked Golden State’s loss.
Basically, the Warriors made an enemy of Paul as motivation for their run of success. They took extra delight in stifling a player they saw as manipulative and dirty, and in doing so only irritated him into more feisty behavior.
To really understand why Chris Paul becoming a Warrior is so weird, you’ve gotta understand the player-vs.-team beef that underscored that longstanding rivalry.

@@thedepresseddog6035that comparison stands bc a lot of Jordan fans think IT was a skilled adversary (in hindsight) but also a dirty-playing irritant & a very annoying rival. Then when Jordan's run began, IT's run was past its heyday, just like Steph & CP. @@Mister.Patterson Chris Paul was never going to move the needle much for the Warriors this year. Steph's relationship with CP3 sort of mirrors the one he had with Lebron. They were cool with him when he was the little guy, not a threat. Chris Paul has had an interesting NBA career so far. In the beginning, he was a bright young star with the New Orleans Hornets, leading them to 56 wins at just 22 years old. He finished 2nd in MVP voting in 2008 and many believed his career would take off from there. However, what followed was...years of disappointment and injuries. Chris Paul is one of the best point guards in the league today, but he's also rated very inconsistently among the NBA fanbase.

Chris Paul is one of my all-time favorite players and I love these stories about him. There are a lot of criticisms of Paul and his antics on the court. I basically agree with all or most of the criticisms, but I also just enjoyed watching him play and for being a player that older fans claim they want to see, a guy who isn't buddy buddy playing tough, but then complain he's being how they wanted. Whatever team Paul played for was usually a contender and while his teams came up short, as a Suns fan trust me it hurts, Paul through sheer force of personality always made match ups more interesting and feel like a rivalry, even if the rivalry was one sided.

A story on a much smaller scale. I was coaching my brother's 11-12 Dixie League team when I was 20 (basically Little League in the South) and we had a team we could not stand. One of their players was just the worst, he'd do hard tags, always had a bad attitude, and did some other questionable things during games, just one of those annoying players. Well, we ended up winning the league that year, so the time came around for all the coaches to meet and for us to talk about who we think should be on the all-star team. I got the final say being the head coach of the winning team and the one who got to coach that team, and I went into that meeting with my mind made up of players I wanted throughout the league. We needed 12 for the roster, and I went in with 14, but three of them were going on vacation or had prior engagements with their travel teams. After talking with the coaches, they basically agreed with my decision, but the coach for that kid's team was adamant that we should take that player. I knew my brother could not stand him based on their interactions in the field, and I refused to coach kids with bad attitudes even if they were the best player on the field, but that coach talked me into it. That kid ended up being one of my favorite players I ever coached, his coach just never taught him that you shouldn't do those things, and that was what he thought was competing hard. During our first exhibition he tagged a kid excessively hard and I told him calmly in the dugout that isn't how you play baseball, and he took it and never did it again. He was a competitor, he played right field strictly because we trusted him to make throws from right field to first base to try and turn hard hit ground balls to the outfield into outs, and he managed to get 3 of those during our all-star run. He also got two dingers in that run, one of them being a walk-off. Turned out to be a great kid with misguided coaching, and my brother ended up being pretty good friends with him for the rest of the time they played Dixie ball. I know it's not the same as NBA level fueds, but I think just being on the same team will clear up a lot of misunderstandings a lot of the time.

You guys didn't mention that KD was hurt when the Warriors beat the Rockets in 19. Putting to bed the argument that the Rockets would have won in 18 if they had CP.

As a cp3 fan followed him from his Hornets day until this day, i think what Chris missed the most as a teammate is a top notch wing predator. Can he make a big man better? Yes, just ask David West, Tyson Chandler, Blake Griffin, Deandre Jordan and Ayton. Can he make an iso player better? Also yes, Harden, Booker, Russ, etc the list went on. BUT, that lone OKC season when he along Shai led the Thunder to playoff is the most different version of Cp3 that i have ever watched. Well next year he is now paired with Wemby, who is a big man, an iso player and finally a true predator.

I told you people is so honest about that UConn coach for the for the Lakers because this is so great man for the Lakers so huge they made the best choice in the best of every aspect for the Lakers possible and see if the Warriors can't do something that's going to be beneficial and dominant for their team they ain't going to get back to where they used to be
