We no longer live in an era where just skill and being good is enough. AI is taking over everything. Getting the function right is the basic purpose and should be put above originality but when you do reach that level you need to be original if you want to make an impact. The thing about being original is that we all have it. We just don't know how to let it out and put it to use. Our "true selves" have been oppressed by the society. We are all different so naturally should create different art. Instead of putting originality aside you need to GIVE IT TIME. You can't figure it out over night but you'll find your style in the process eventually even if it takes years.

I think the heart of what he was saying isn't to not be original, but to first be good, and then be original :)

I feel his quote has a very deep meaning. when we try to achieve goodness, we eventually be able to master all the principles of designs or rules. We begin to understand the meaning behind vaious styles of design, approaches and reasonings behind it. It helps opening the mind blocks as well as provides a perspective of what an individual artist may like and how to create original. Also, until we pass a certain stage, it is not that easy to create something sort of original style that will be good or great. Original style requires more than just choosing fav fonts or color.@@TheDesignSmith
