We always hear about bands such as Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer, Steppenwolf, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, being progenitors of Metal and heavy music in general, I've always thought Paul Revere and the Raiders deserve a whole lot more credit than they have ever received. I mean, they knew how to rock. Who doesn't hear a bit of Geezer in that bassline?

Me Too or Three. Lyrics back then, to me, were largely irrelevant to whether a musical composition and performance grabbed me. Kicks always confounded me because of the great Drake Levin 12-string guitar lick that drove this song, along with Phil's incredible walking bass guitar line that gave the tune depth/foundation. Those 2 instruments and Lindsay's vocal made Kicks and had me humming it incessantly. A great track from an under-rated band in its earliest personnel configuration. Great songs, instrumentation, and a stage act that was clever, funny, and effective.

The Raiders could really play. They were experienced entertainers when they got to this level. You can hear that on the early live stuff. I wonder if it isn't them playing on this song. That rhythm work sounds like Drake Levinson's style, as does the rest of the album's guitar work.

I don't believe thats entirely true. I recall reading a few years ago the that these guys were experienced playing the "Garage Band Circuit" back in the 60's . . . and their producer used a few professional players at times in the studio, but for the most part that's ALL BAND playing the Rhythm Tracks, Vocals. But I can understand the reference the "Wrecking Crew" Players. Those guys were amazing. . . . In other words for example, supposedly Ry Cooder and Jerry Cole played Lead guitar parts on "HIM or ME" but that's was the extent of it. In other words, this wasn't like what the Beach Boys had in the studio with Hal Blaine & Glen Campbell etc . . I saw a Wrecking Crew Special a few years ago and Paul Revere & Raiders were never mentioned . . . but who knows . . .

I took this off the record, as I remember, at Perry’s mother’s dance studio. I sat at the old upright in the corner playing the guitar riff in my right hand and the bass line in left surprised that they actually worked together contrapuntally. “Of course”, Perry said. I must have been expecting wanton polyphonic obliviousness.

The group once said the arrangement was influenced by the sound of The Animals late 1965 singles.

I like that there's a song that was trying to stop people from over indulging and being destroyed by the hippie counter-cultures drug practices...i also like that it was a group called Paul revere and the raiders...you would think with the bad reputation all the people and the 60s and 70s have when it came to that kind of behavior...to find a song like this among so many songs that I used to love...it feels good...like maybe we could count on someone after all
