This is how I remember meat and potato pie being prepared! I'm from Yorkshire and it used to be a favourite meal with me when I was a kid. (I'm now almost 80). Thank you Paul.

I've not seen that technique before... lining the edge of the pan / dish with a strip of dough, then putting your pastry topping on. Top tip. 👍

I'll make this tonight, Nov 12 2023. I love the old big bowls you use very nicely. Your twirling you rolling on is like the fingers in a band who twirl their drumsticks. Love this channel and city bakes. I learn a lot and history which is the fun part.

That looks delicious! In the US we call that a Pot Pie. They are more often made with chicken and mixed vegetables inside, though. Suet really does look like it makes a big difference. I wish it wasn't so difficult to get over here.

I made this pie exactly as shown yet my gravy was still as thin as water when ready to put into the pie. I had to thicken with cornflour. Any ideas on where I went wrong?
@Truthhurts230 Жыл бұрын
Did you use a starchy potato like Maris piper? That breaks down and thickens the sauce.

Henry VIII was long dead before the first potato was brought to Europe...so he never ate a single potato. Come on editors and fact checkers this is basic stuff.

Of course it is! If it can be a pie if it only has a pastry bottom - eg: Pumpkin or Key Lime, or Lemon meringue, or grasshopper etc - why not only a pastry top? And, what about Shepherd's pie or Cottage pie which has no pastry whatsover....? Depends where you're from! I'm from the north of England as is Paul. Many of our pies had both top and bottom crust, eg: pork pies or pies containing fruit, like apple. The way Paul made the pie is the way my mother made it, her dad and her grandmother made it and it was always called meat and potato pie. Fruit pies always had pastry on both top and bottom.

Alright, what is a pud? I know what it means in America but I'm ignorant and I'm sure it doesn't mean that in "classy sounding" London 🤣
@InvisibleVisible7932 жыл бұрын
I'm wanting your books, do your books come with American measurements and temperatures? I know I wouldn't spend the time translating each recipe.
@nathanjustus66592 жыл бұрын
I buy them from Amazon UK to avoid that. Buy yourself a kitchen scale, they are only about $20 or so. A british cup, though, is 250ml IIRC. But really, I prefer to use weights whenever possible, it’s more accurate. Consider that a cup of flour may be anywhere from 3.75 to 5.25 ounces.
@InvisibleVisible7932 жыл бұрын
@@nathanjustus6659 Thank you for your reply. I do have a scale that does those measurements. I will be trying PH's Bloomer recipe and will look up the oven temperature translation. I just don't want to invest in his books if it is not user friendly. But thank you ever so much.

Paul seriously needs some cooking lessons, what a terrible pie, meat was not browned, no seasoning herbs or spices, no diced carrots and celery, it was not even a real pie, had no bottom, so bland, this pie should be called the most boring pie in the world, well done Paul, you failed yet again to cook anything other than bread.
