After I have purchased them I take home, riddle them twice. Then store then in a small qty of groundbait in those tube with those lids that you can leave slightly open. Check them every two or three days, usually have to riddle them off at least once a week. I store them in a small fridge. I can keep them for four weeks or so this way during the winter. I might try your way Paul tbh I haven’t thought of this until I watched your video. I guess your way you don’t end up with live bait mixed in with ground bait. Any comments welcome guys.

I stick maize in mine and keep in a fridge, but I will say i don't think maggot quality is as good as it was 30-40 years ago, these days their skinny and dont last as long, bring back the good old fat maggots we used to get as kids, great advice as always Paul 👍🎣🎣🎣

Hiya Paul hope your well! I do think that we get a bit paranoid about freshness and their smell,we spend so much money on flavouring and attracters that we forget that as maggots age Aminos come into play,we used to laugh at our friend on match day who had dead decaying maggots and black casters in his tub,but he would always win, ammonia and all! Small or large they all catch, perhaps the stinkier the better, when you think we were all taught to degrease them and now it's pour juice and oil on them! Maybe someone got it wrong eh? Nice one paul! 😷

If they have maybe sweated a bit I add a small amount of dry fine groundbait.

Hi Paul useful and very helpful information thank you my question is, do you know what temperature your fridge is set at? As I have tried many times to keep maggots in fridge but most escape which suggests the fridge is too warm therefore I am trying to find out what the optimum temp should be. Cheers Another Paul

I don’t know it’s a cheap standard drinks fridge, I’d guess around 5 degrees, but as they are bagged there should be no escapees.

for dead maggot just empty your bag of live maggots thats been in the fridge 3 days straight into a bait tin filled with water, as long as they can't breath they wont come around...job done

Agree that does work but you still get a few crawlers!

I do exactly the same, apart from I riddle them but leave them in a bait box, with a very cold bait fridge,I do it every 3 days too. I also put a bit of groundbait in the bait box just to dry them out abit,or flour, I always double up the bags when freezing maggots, Great video Paul, Maggots have got so expensive lately , so I do alot more preparation of them, I freeze alot more maggots than I used to, as it seems to be a better bait than fresh , Keep these videos coming paul!

Thanks for the good feedback. Always double bag to avoid escapees! I also have some black bags for the freezer to ‘hide’ the contents!

I had a good quantity left over recently but wasn’t planning on going fishing for a couple of weeks so I decided to freeze them to use as dead maggots. I eventually got them out of the freezer in a solid block and left them overnight to defrost and when I opened them the next day a decent number were still alive !!
