I think that the difficulty of these fish has been exaggerated. I haven't had one myself, but I know people that have kept them for years. I think it is an outdated rule that belongs in the days in which they used cyanide to catch fish, something that affects their eating habits and perhaps like most finicky fish, affects them more. I was at the LFS the other day and they had a crap load and they were going crazy in the tank during feeding. I think LFS are starting to pressure importers so they receive sustainable samples in their shipments.

In all my years of diving I have seen many thousands of them and I can't recall seeing them alone, that is not to say it never occurs. I rarely see them go well alone and have seen them grow very long streamers (at least 10inch). They may come from water up to 30c but I have had better results at lower temperatures.

Yes they can go for some coral in the absents of foods they prefer, I have had them with many species of coral that they have not touched. I am not here to tell you what is right or wrong from a text book, I am sharing my experience, which is neither right or wrong!

Well we have many customers that keep moorish idols happily for years but we also have many that can't due to the requirements mentioned in the video.

I was successful in getting 3 moorish idols to start eating, BUT they also ate my corals so I had to get rid of them 🙁

Tips- keep more than one- keep in an establish tank with lots of micro fauna- keep with other slow feeding fish that don't pluck- allow algae growth -get them on spectrum - add at low salinity - don't let the temperature above 28c - keep in a large tank with lots of cover minimum 400lt - hope you get a good one!

hi , do you have more details and ways how to keep this fish for the long term , i mean years like in nature and other species , it is seems to be that this fish is not survive more than a few months in captivity even with perfect condition and when he eating and until now no one have the answer a least a far i know please advise from your experiences thanks

because if you keep more than one they will kill each other. Buying more than one is a sure death for all but one. This video is giving awful advice.

What is your survival rate? I have seen these things very fat and healthy eating rods food, then they just die. I really want these fish in my tank. The ones I've seen kept eating the LPS coral.

irod72002 Survival rate is horrible and they do eat coral. I've read of many reformed because of it.

its not hard to keep them once you have one that was not stress out when they was capture, two make sure you have live rock and plants , also you need a good protein skimmer once they start eating these guys are pigs when i come to food they will eat all day if you let them,and they grow fast!! so a large tank is require like over 75 gal and up bigger is better and easier
