I cried at the end of Switch because of this song. I was 15 and CONVINCED that I experienced a piece of heaven. It's like blue sky and clouds with the lyrics softly written in white. I never forgot that feeling. Also, if you listen to the track all the way to the very end you can hear Clannad softly cooing as if lulling a baby to sleep but really reassuring us! Honest and loving with a happy ending to everyone's story. It almost makes this life make sense.

I was 3 or 4 when I obsessed over that movie, cried every single time, but loved it, Still wished for Amanda to stay alive. Now I think that watching that movie at a such young age had an impact on me, but I remember almost every detail. How crazy is that. And I absolutely agree with the piece of heaven, I think it shaped my perception of religion even.

I would say Joni's version from the Love Actually film might be better than the original because it was being sung by a much more mature Joni Mitchell with even decades more life experience but that's just my opinion. Bows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I've looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show You leave 'em laughin' when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehow It's love's illusions I recall I really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud To say I love you, right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way But now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads, they say I've changed But something's lost and something's gained In living every day I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all

I heard this song first in the movie Switch, early 1990's I believe. Fell in love with it instantly. After I learned it was originally written and performed by Joni Mitchell, I listened to her versions. For years I much preferred this diet, so so beautiful. Lately though, I've come to appreciate the wistfulness, simplicity and depth of Joni's version much more. This one here is much more melodic and romantic. Joni's is, to me, more subtle, nuanced and multi-layered.

Every once in a while, someone takes a great song and re-interprets it in such a way that the Earth splits underfoot and a different universe is revealed. This version of “Both Sides Now” is one example. “The Sound of Silence” by Disturbed is another. Such events are rare and sublime.
