Totally agree and glad you realise it, I grew up in the 80's and people wrote love songs, soul, disco etc or songs that commented on matters of concern. I would say the rap industry in particular is responsible for 'lowering the tone' with its references to money, ho's and sex, not saying its all gone bad but it doesn't exactly help matters, music should elevate the spirit , bring joy to the soul even if it is a melancholic beauty as in ' A different corner' . Back in the 80's i was quite the emotional teenager. I cried a lot looking back, heartbroke too many times. As ive got older the tears are less, it takes a lot to make me cry. But even now, listening to george, he somehow manages to make me feel. Life can harden us, but always and forever inside is the child that needs love. We should never forget that. My neighbour in Highgate, London and on December 25 2016. @ just 53 years old he died. He was at his other home in Goring but within 24 hours a shrine to him was created in Highgate where fans and neighbours lit candles, left flowers and keepsakes in a 24/7 vigil. This grew over the months and his Range Rover still parked there made it all surreal. The world lost a fabulous talent when George was taken from us! RIP 🙏🏻

It's weird...i was young but definitely alive! I had "Make It Big" on cassette (nicked off my sister), loved Careless Whisper, listened to the Top 40 every week yet this was number one and I have no recollection of it at all! Yet I can remember pretty much every other song in the charts at the time, even Grange Hill :P I guess this was a bit too boring to the 10 year old me.

While I think artists' personal relationship lives are none of my business, as it became common knowledge later that he was gay, I'll add that the way he channeled additional sadness he may have been feeling from societal homophobia into another influence for his artistry was also brilliant. Christmas will mark 5 years since the world lost him. I just rewrote his "Last Christmas" as an anti-COVID-19 song for my profit-free flickr site with full credits to him as musician, writer and producer and link to the video, combined with one of my own Christmas photos.
