Remote control. There are two possibilities.First one is that he had two identical puppets. One that can be handled only with someone's hand, and another one with an internal mechanism that can work by a remote control. Second possibility is that he only had 1 puppet that could be controlled either by hand either by a remote control.

really, i think the jokes he has in common with jeff are generic ventriloquist jokes. you wouldnt get onto a comedian for telling that joke every comedian eventually tells about that one person who spoke to them after the show about them saying a certain word, its just funny,true, and relevant
