This week is our trickiest block of the Quilt along. If you'd like to make an easier version you could always replace the centre with a plain piece of fabric or a quarter square triangle...

This is a great block, thank you for the detailed tutorial Paula! [I notice that up to minute 32:02, your two side pieces of your middle row do not have a 1/4" seam allowance on the outside points, yet by minute 34:31 you miraculously DO have the 1/4" seam allowance on all four sides! Ah, the magic of video editing. (I for one prefer when demonstrators fess up to their errors, as it makes me feel better about my own, of which there are MANY. And that way, we can also be shown how to fix them)]. But I do appreciate how much time and effort goes into video recording and editing to post a professional KZbin video, and must say that your time and talent are very much appreciated.

Hi there, just letting you know that there was no magic editing... I didn't cut out any mistakes, I made just one block from start to finish and only cut out the steps that were the same to save time. I tried to see what you mean but I'm not sure which seam allowance you mean? Can you let me know... Thanks for your comment 😃 regards Paula

Ohhh I see what you mean. When you join the next rows it creates the ¼" seam allowance for you. If there was a ¼" from the top at this 32.02 point you would end up with a 1/4" gap when you piece the blocks together. Just wanted to let you know that I didn't cut out any mistakes, this step by step tutorial is correct... hugs Paula

Was this block previously published in a quilt magazine in a different setting?? I made this block in a quilt sometime between 2005 and 2010. Unfortunately, I didn't label the quilt with the pattern name or the magazine title and would like to find it. Edit to add: My husband just hauled in two gigantic tubs of magazines. It was published Feb 2003 by Quilters World under the quilt name Stars and Stripes and has the block name as Swirling Star. It has templates and is not paper pieced.

Paula, after my comment herein, we were discussing this at home with my son who watched the video and in order to match the array of colours properly and not getting confused we will horinzontaly flip the vido to work mirror wise. If we follow the instructions your give pero colour we end up with a spinning star running anticlockwise, which is a bit annoying from the aesthetic point of view. My technique means the template is reversed. If you want it spinning the other way, you just need to flip the template. Doesn’t matter if it’s horizontal or vertical as the pattern is identical both ways. I think sometimes we just need to make a pattern before we overthink it. That way so many of our questions are answered. Have fun with it! Paula x

Hi Linda, you need to make sure you turn off any scaling. You printer is probably shrinking it a bit to make sure it fits on the page. You should be able to change the setting to print at 100%. Hope that helps xxx

I have not done this freezer paper method. Is there any reason I can't do it the traditional way ? Sewing on the paper and removing at the end of the project ? Beautiful block and I LOVE Kaffe !

No reason at all 😊 I just find this way easier and has less waste of both fabric and paper. But as always I recommend making this however makes sense to you x

Hi Wendy, I don't see through the paper for two reasons. One I really really dislike picking off paper and two because I'm too lazy to make a heap of templates lol! This way I only need one set of templates 😃

Sorry Paula, your execution for this block is wrong. I have tried to follow step by step, over and over again and every time the resulting positions of colours are wrong. You start with yellow to the left side of the very first block but the yellow colour ends in the right side. After checking several times the video, you start cutting the wrong triangle. You should start cutting the long line for the right side, not the opposite one. This is crucial if you try to end up whith a right colour wheel. Please your comments. Thanks

The block is identical all the way around... I think you are confusing the back and front. The template is reversed for construction, so you need to look at the back of your piece.
