Truth be told, I watched this video days ago. I'm not here to comment on the video, really, but rather to say that I just started using Home Assistant and I'M IN LOVE. If tell my friends, but they wouldn't have a clue what I was so excited about. Home Assistant far exceeds my expectations. If you're on the fence and are tech inclined, go for it! You won't regret it! Thank you, Paul, for being part of my Home Assistant journey and providing some tech inspiration!

I think you've missed the true beauty of this remote. Neither my wife nor I have issues using the app, except in the middle of the night when we wake up and want to change something but don't want to grab our phone, unlock it, open the app, and scroll to the thing we want to adjust. It is literally the problem we have with our sleep number bed. It's just too much faffing about in the middle of the night. A nice simple set of buttons is just what I've been thinking about to trigger the Sleepnumber 360 integration so I can quickly get back to sleep.

I did the same thing with one of those remote controls that use a dongle. I made some stickers to label stuff too. I also created a function that switches what device it controls. Shift right makes it a media remote for Alexa. I have several playlists that can be selected by number. Shift up controls the TV. Shift left controls lights. A variable list in the automation maps buttons to human readable commands. A text input stores which device the remote is supposed to be controlling.

This is pretty cool. I've been using an Elgato Stream Deck attached to my PC to do more or less the same thing, which works great, but you're tethered to your PC. This is like a wireless version, albeit you can't digitally edit the keys and need to print, cut out and stick them over the keys. Despite that, it's pretty sweet!

I am using a stream deck also. The one thing that stinks though is that I don't always turn my computer on. I lucked out though and had an old usb keypad, and usb cat 5 extender. I was able to use that and put it on the desk and now I can control stuff without computer being on. I was actually so pleased that I was able to use some old hardware from almost 10 years ago to complete this project.

Nice video again, certainly going to try this. An extra option to prevent cluttering your automation overview, you could opt to make 1 automation with all the key presses in it. You simply click the 3 bullets button of the trigger (right top), select Edit ID, and give your trigger a name. When entering the actions, you can then add a Choose block and add each action by adding a Condition for each action with the Triggered By option and choosing the name you gave the trigger from the list

Another option is using the HACS integration called Switch Manager. It's specifically made for buttons and switches that generate events instead of switch actions. You'd need to make a template for this keypad first but honestly that's pretty easy. Although I'm not sure if it will work (yet) with a keyboard( I use it for Oh the ZigBee buttons)

I have a number of simple very small button pads around the house for various things. I have one each at my desk and my wife's desk for controlling the lights (including a toggle for Zoom Meeting mode where it switches off the overhead light which casts a glare and turns on all the other ambient lights so you can still see us in the webcams.) There are also one each in our upstairs bedroom to control the lighting and ceiling fan in each room. It's not that folks can't do this on their phones. (I do have a very nice dashboard for complete control.) but this eliminates the need to take out the phone for such simple operations. The PI+numeric pad is a great idea if you need more things than fit on an 8- or 4-button little pad. I'm using Lutron Casetta pads and RM433 pads because I already have the receivers that translate button presses so Home Assistant can see them and trigger toggles and automations. The programming is the same process as your keypad, but with different events and different codes. I also get events for both press and release. Thanks for the tutorial. In spite of the microphone thing, it was fun to watch and informative.

You can add all key presses into one automation, set each trigger with an ID, and the action trigger based on ID. Better than creating dozens of automations.
@paulhibbert

Thanks mate! Is it as searchable that way though? By categorising my automations I can collapse them but still search for the individual components if and when I want to change something

Paul: Has Plex. Also Paul: For some reason still also has all the streaming services.

I have my Jellyfin for my movie collection. I also keep several streaming services for new content and content not easily purchased at the time of streaming. (Such as Netflix originals, which may or may not be released to bluray or DVD after the fact) There are reasons to have both, especially if you have to skills to run Plex Emby or Jellyfin on your own as it is free.

Great video and a good idea, I've a similar keypad and although it works the range is pants! about 4 feet, what's your range? maybe yours is a better keypad, I assume this method should work with a bluetooth connected macro keypad? like the ones from Aliexpress?

@TheShinyGuru 2 күн бұрын
I have one that looks identical, although in the device listing it has a different name & more entries. Although for reasons I don't understand it took 2 days to get it to work now that it is, I have about 10 feet of range from a room upstairs and over from where the receiver is. The keyboard_remote web page talks about using Bluetooth keyboards so they should work.

And how you go around the HASSIO (where you plug in the 2.4ghz usb dongle) location versus the bedroom location. I assume it works in a nearby setup…. And if not, what would be an alternative ? Any thoughts? Great find by the way.

Hi Paul, I understand that you have to make money from this channel, but I think tutorial videos like this are so much better than product reviews. Also, for the automation, would it be better to use one automation with trigger IDs and the choose action, rather than eighteen separate automations? Thanks as always for the great video. Eddie
@TheMistymina
@TheMistymina 4 күн бұрын
Thing is, it's probably easier to find what you're looking for directly from the automations page where you can filter and search than it would be to look for the relevant branch of a choice within a single automation.

How are you getting on with the ust in your bedroom? I’m getting one for the living room but considering for the bedroom too because a bright (even when set to dimmest) 55” tv in the bedroom at night just doesn’t feel good on the eyes lol. Would you say the projector is better for that?

Why not break your confirmation up into multiple files by say, domain line below? group: !include groups.yaml automation: !include automations.yaml script: !include scripts.yaml switch: !include switch.yaml So remote_keyboard: !include remote_kwyboard.yaml That way you could just throw all your remote YAML into one file. I know everyone has a different method to their madness so this may be preferable to you to just use the main confirmation file for everything.

Worth remembering that those of us not running Home Assistant on bare metal or in a VM don't have the addons store, and so also don't have file editor either. We have to break out terminal and ssh, etc.
