Paul....Excellent video series. What I'm doing is removing the batten strips from all of the butt joints and corners in our doublewide home. 3/8" rock laid on the vertical throughout. Instead of taping all of the exposed joints, I'm pulling all of the brads and hammering down the joints with a piece of hard oak. Then I'm filling the joints with green mud, sand and then cover with skim. I love the roller trick; makes a lot of sense and will make the skim consistent. On all outside and inside corners, I'm using that Strait-Line product; it's awesome especially with 45 degree outsides. Let me know what you think about not taping the butt joints. Great videos!

I just started a new job as Maintenance. I've never done texturing before, so I subscribed to your channel. It's coming out like I was a pro. 😂 One question though. How often do you change out the roller?

Hello Paul, I love your videos. I'm getting ready to work on my bathroom walls after removing wall paper. Can you tell how long do I wait to skin coat after applying the primer? How long does it take to dry before I apply the second coat?

Hey, I’m from the UK and I live in a small cottage with really lovely wavy old walls - building’s made of lime stone and is about 200 years old. I think your videos make the process seem quite easy and straight-forward. Hopefully the same principals can be applied when going on these naturally curvy walls. Although, I do have some old wood beams on the ceiling to manoeuvre around! You wouldn’t happen to know how one would deal with that would you? You’re channel’s great. Keep it up
@PaulPeck
@PaulPeck 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rosy, when you’re going around the beams, just get close to them beams with the roller. Then when you come back to smooth out the skim coat mud with your drywall knife, you can get right up to the beams that way.👍🏻 I hope this helps. Let me know if you run into any questions along the way. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!🙏 -Paul

Paul, I love following your videos and feel this series will help me immensely. I am getting ready to fix a room for my son. He and his wife just purchased a house that had every room wallpapered. When they removed the paper (with a steam gun) all of the walls were damaged to the point painting them will leave the rooms looking terrible. This method should work (I hope).

thanks for the video. I did this a couple times when I was in highschool about 25 years ago when my church would go to mexico to build houses and stuff. I tried to do it on my own just a day ago and it was a disaster. But when I did it before, there was a member of the church guiding me and stuff. I forgot all about using a roller.

We were removing wallpaper with raw drywall that was never prepped more than 30 years ago. We tore the wall in several places before giving up. Some diy home renovators suggested to skim coat over what’s left of the paper backing and damaged wall. Would you say to do this??? We need HELP!!!

Today I used your paint roller trick. 1. The paint roller was pulling the tape off the wall on the joints! This was very frustrating as I used Durabond and pre-filled those joints when I laid the tape then went over it with quickset 45 once that dried. 2. The other issue I had I noticed specks of red/pink lint in the roller and it was getting on the wall. I thought maybe the roller was bad so I grabbed another one out of the package. That too had that pinkish lint in it. I’m not sure what that was but I had to use my 6” knife to keep pulling it off the wall. Should I use the paint roller on the second coat or do without it? Any suggestions on what to do about the tape issue? It only came up in two sections. I put some JC under it hoping it would hold it down but noticed it was still coming up off the wall. Thanks a bunch!

Hi Paul! How would you do the corners of a wall? And what about steering clean on crown molding? Can I just tape those areas off with painters tape? I’m totally new at this. I took the wallpaper off in my kitchen and most of the paint underneath came off with it.

Your tips have helped a bunch. I just did a small bedroom and needed 3 coats but how smooth should the last coat be? I have some spots that are pretty smooth other spots a little rough, will sanding even all this out or should I spot fix rougher patches?

I know that this is a dry wall tip, but 2 questions. I’m moving in a new to me house, it’s old (160ish years old) and there’s wood paneling covering most of the house, and plaster walls with a very broad stroked texture. I’m looking to smooth out the walls before painting. Would this method shown in the video work for the wood paneling (mostly because I don’t want to pull them and hang drywall), and what’s a good method for the plaster? Please and thank you!

Hi Robert, I have skim coated over paneling successfully several times before.👍🏻 one thing I did do, was to treat the joints where the panels meet like a drywall joint to prevent them from cracking. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul

Robert Ford: I would lightly sand the paneling and use a oil primer or shellac so the mud will stick to the paneling.

Just moved into a prewar building with 9ft plaster walls. The ceiling and walls in the are foyer are chipped and peeling. I'm a complete beginner with skim coating, but I work in construction so I've seen tapers do it all the time. Should I scrap the peeling off then do this technique or is there something additional I should do? Thanks!

Let me give ya a tip; instead of wrapping the roller in a plastic bag, just hang the roller by its hook on top of the metal grid, (the handle will obviously be sticking above the level of the 5 gallon bucket lip, but that doesn’t matter because you won’t be putting the cover back on the 5 gallon bucket of joint compound). Then, just drape a 13 gallon garbage bag over the handle and bucket. (You don’t have to secure the bottom of the garbage bag to the bucket. Just let it hang there.) By a process of physics too complicated to get into here, the joint compound and saturated roller will not dry out for days if not weeks. With paint, I’ve had it last for 3-4 weeks without the paint drying out at all. In fact, I also simply hang my paint-saturated brush with a paint hook over the inside lip of the bucket, too. This way, I never have to clean the brush until the job is finished.

Project; remove battens from prefab home, skim coat over vinyl textured wallpaper. Do I need to prime over the vinyl paper? What do you suggest? My mother wants me just to pull battens and tape and fill joints. I refuse to do it because it will look terrible. Any help or suggestions for a DIY girl helping her mom.

Paul Peck the sheetrock is prewallpapered and then hung (because it's a pre-fab factory). It's wrapped around the edges even. So yes it's stuck good. The reason behind the renovation is her tenants left a hole in the wall. The wallpaper is no longer available, she checked with sun homes the manufacturer.

Hi DJ, it takes to much paint to change the color. A paint tint would be better. You might be able to get the guys at local paint store to or big box store to give you some. Or just paint the wall a darker color and use the joint compound (which will be whitish when it dries. Good luck and let me know how it goes.👍🏻 -Paul

Why do you use green for skimcoat instead of blue?
@PaulPeck
@PaulPeck 6 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I like the All Purpose joint compound with the dark green lid because it goes on smooth, sands easy and has more glue in it. This means I can go right over a painted and textured surface like on my demonstration wall in this video. It was a knockdown texture painted with a egg shell paint. The light would be good for the next skim coat. But, I just prefer the green lid over the blue lid compound. Thanks so much for the comment and watching my friend! -Paul
