I saw this for the first time last night and it gave me a light bulb moment. Using a spray water bottle was a game changer. I had been really struggling with skim coating. If I made the mud to thin it fell off the wall. If it was too thick I couldn't spread it properly. Thank you so much for this information.

Thanks Spencer "awesome delivery", definitely the calmness in your voice and the comedy kept my attention. The professionalism and presentation was just a bonus. By the way, just like you motivate so many of us not to give up on "Skim Coating" ..... you should give the comedy a second shot :-).

I'll be watching tomorrow when you break out the festool sander. I've been running the 5-in Makita orbital with a vacuum hose. Every time I say, "next skim coating job I'm going to get one of those pole sander/vacuum" Someday

Just wanted to say thank you for this. I've watched quite a few videos on drywall while tackling progressively bigger/harder fixes around the house. None of the videos I've seen so far went through the basics of angle. As a result I've been floating at 45 and lower and trying to compensate for the thick application. Looking forward to practicing with thinner coats. Again, thank you!

THANK YOU! Best instructions and encouragement that I have seen. I thought I was supposed to do it one coat and tried and failed miserably. I got tired of trying after only a small area and stopped. I think I can fix my wrong and feel better about getting it done. Doing this over Venetian plaster that is just dated-looking and ugly. It looks like stucco but I will get it right thanks to your help!

I have been binge-watching your videos like a season of 'The Office' today. You have me so pumped to get started with my first DIY painting and wallpaper projects! Only thing is I have orange peel textured, satin-painted walls... bleh. Do I need to do any prep to the painted walls before skim coating? After the skim coating dries, you recommend the Gardz - would this be the same whether I wanted to paint over the new nontextured walls or put up wallpaper? I think my main concern is the proper layering and steps necessary to achieve what I want in each of the two cases (papering and painting). [Any advice that leads to me becoming half as good as you will be kept strictly confidential 😂😂]

Melissa, Thank you! Would you please share your experience with my teaching and videos with everyone else by considering to give me a five star review on the following link with some nice words? www.google.com/search?q=tampa%20wallpaper%20installer&tbm=#lkt=LocalPoiReviews&trex=m_t:lcl_akp,rc_f:nav,rc_ludocids:18168418332679895040,rc_q:Spencer%2520Colgan%2520-%2520Wallpaper%2520Installer,ru_q:Spencer%2520Colgan%2520-%2520Wallpaper%2520Installer,trex_id:XCBBr&lpg=cid:CgIgAQ%3D%3D 1. Before you Skim Coat, Apply PVA primer over semi gloss paint in order to get traction when you’re Skim Coat; if however the paint is flat, proceed to Skim Coat without any primer. 2. After the Skim Coat, after it dries, proceed to seal it with Gardz or RX-35 (pro-999) Yes. It would be the same whether you wanted to paint over the moon on textured walls or put up wallpaper. Thank you so much for watching my videos

@@spencercolgan thanks! I have one more question. I’m wallpapering a small 1/2 bathroom (4x5feet) with a door that has 1” on the adjacent wall, then the corner. Extremely tight spot. The wall above it is 1 foot high. How should I wallpaper that tiny section of wall? This is my first attempt at hanging wallpaper, and watching your videos is like taking a master class! I could not have made it this far without your videos.

You've been doing this a while and I appreciate the knowledge. However, I think if I can use an analogy you're like a basketball player who has good shooting form but can't explain the actual mechanics of it. Two things. You suggested 90 degree skimming but didn't actually use it in the video for the most part. Second, explain what your hands and fingers are doing while using your tools. Putting pressure on one side of the blade/knife with your thumb and finger moving in one direction and keeping mud in the center are what eliminates lines. Diagnose what your "feel" is from years of practice and you can articulate even better what newcomers need to learn. Not being negative but you have a big audience who can benefit from even more information because drywall IS FRUSTRATING.
