I LIVE IN A HOME that was built in 1905 with plaster walls and lathe planks(?) Inside. I NEED TO REPAIR A sizable hole. I'm seena lot of referrals for Big Wally's conditioner and adhesive. All to be used on the inside before filling in and plastering. If the video isn't mentioning BIG Wally's there is no mention at all of using a conditioner. Is it necessary? What is this conditioner comprised of that makes it a benefit? Is there some other brand or recipe I could try instead? The price for Big Wally's is ridiculously high if you ask me! One last question please... do you have a repair video foe plaster walls? Forgive me if I sound crazy. This video you commented or hearted of mine just came in and I see you did it just moments ago so I hope I'm catching you now! Thanks for sharing your superpowers with us!

Hey Paul, This video is very helpful! My husband and I were terrible at drywalling a few years ago. Now I’m educating myself so I can repair some ceilings that have small bits of paper damage and nail pops. My first go at it was horrible! But after watching this, I now understand I need to apply pressure on the leading edge. I think I’ll switch to a wall repair so I can get some practice before attempting the ceiling again. Thanks so much!

Thank you so much for this video! We moved in to a "fixer upper" and the previous owner had textured every wall in the house with a coarse sponge dipped in drywall mud and made swirls on the walls and let it dry with the peaks and then painted it! I wish I could send you photo so you could see how horrible it looks! Anyways replacing all the sheetrock was out of the question due to cost so I have to skim coat the walls. I've had to sand the walls as the peaks were up to 3/4 of an inch in places. But once sanded this method your showing is working awesome! It literally looks like brand new drywall! I cant thank you enough!

Glad to see a video with what my walls actually look like. Just bought my first house and spent 40+(still more to go) hours so far removing wallpaper with a steamer. Some walls had 3 layers on it and most weren't prepped or painted before they put the paper on so ive got a lot of holes and gouges in the rock that they papered over. Cant wait to get started figuring out these techniques.

Best way to remove wallpaper is blue dawn and water in a spray bottle. Doesnt take a huge amount of dawn but it peels RIGHT off. And use a semi sharp scraping tool. Be sure to wear gloves if you can. It gets sticky and nasty. But you don't have to. A professional wall repair guy helped me with that tip.

I'm a painter by trade, and occasionally, I have to skim coat walls. I was taught by a professional drywall contractor how to skim coat, sand, and then one last skim, and a little more sanding to finish up. I've also learned how to do knockdown texture on walls, and there's not a lot of homes that have that type of finish on their walls, so it's nice to be able to add that to my resume. I really enjoyed your video, and you have a new subscriber. Enjoy your weekend brother! ~Joe ✌😎

I just pulled down paneling that had beautiful old sheet rock under it that I want to keep. The sheet rock looks like boards in an old beach house, in other words it has a groove in it at intervals. The paneling pulled some of the Sheetrock paper off and it has imperfections, so glad to find your video. I hope I can modify your method. I’m a 65 year old retired nurse who is remodeling the house I lived in when I was born and has been rented by me to a couple for 37 years and until they both passed away. I was married to a carpenter, we built our first house, which was a pole house 20 feet off the ground in the woods. I have been remolding and building anything I wanted or needed since then.

Paul, I appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise. I'm a DIY'er but not new to to drywall, tape and bed but always seem to find a situation that requires a new technique. I am in the middle of a bathroom remodel in which I have replaced all the drywall so the condition of the surfaces are good. The room is small, 5' wide x 8'm walls but the job is complicated by the fact that I framed a dome vault aka cloister vault ceiling. For those who can't envision this ceiling imagine an umbrella that only has 4 panels but unlike a pyramid shape still rounds to a dome at the top. This ceiling therefore has four concave panels that meet at the top almost like the top of a sphere but where they meet at the walls they have defined corners. Those corners where they meet each other are changing in angle every inch, in addition were each panel meets the top of each respective wall the angle is not a common degree angle, ie not 90 or 45. All this brings great challenge to even an experienced DIYer in getting smooth layers of mud into the corners when taping as well as when skimming. Is there a tool you are aware of that might help do these odd angles and concave surfaces? Perhaps a Pool Trowel? Thanks, Stuart

I'm patching my daughter's room where she destroyed a 20"x24" section of drywall requiring a huge repair area. Patching is done, now ready to paint and was wondering about priming the patched area. This is a great tutorial on skimming - hope I don't have to do any soon. One important thing I learned as a DIYer, first just get the mud on the wall and then move it around and smooth it out, get the mud on the wall first. LOL.

Hi, Paul. I am a DIY guy. I watched your video yesterday and today I skim coated my bathroom walls after removing wallpaper and priming with Gardz. Removing wallpaper is of the devil! This time my walls were not as bad as in your video, but the walls had plenty of damaged drywall paper. Your description of diluting the mud to pancake batter or yogurt helped. However, I diluted a full 3.5 gallon box of lite drywall mud with 60 ounces of water and that was twice as much as I needed for the 208 square feet I skim coated. Your rolling method of applying the mud worked GREAT, much faster than using a drywall pan. Where I live all drywall also is textured, so that will be my next step on my bathroom project using a paint roller and some of my extra diluted drywall mud. I am glad for the texture step as I think that will hide my lack of skill. Your skim was "like glass." My skim coat turned out pretty good maybe not that glass-like. Thanks for your helpful video!!!

Thanks for the video! My husband and I just removed 2 layers of wallpaper with multiple layers of paint on top of the wallpaper! It was a MESS. 10 hours later we are ready to skim!! We couldn’t find the primer you used in stores and didn’t want to wait to order so we got a multi use primer from the paint section. It seems to be doing the job! Now we know to order the Gardz ahead of time from now on (doubt we ever do this again🤪). Thanks for the tutorial. It has really helped!

I was a painter many years ago. My Dad and 2 brothers were all tradies here in Australia..but they never mess with serious plaster work, jusy typical patchwork, backfilling..plastering is a whole different trade here in Australia.. I was the black sheep and got an office job. I have the skills but am very slow. I'm doing my bathroom, going to be tiled wall on aquachek gyprock. I am doing the drywall myself, but didn't want to mess with ceiling, so just removed the old cornice as neat as i could. I've decided the ceiling definitely needs a skim coat..this vid has helped a lot..feel a lot more confident at least..pretty sure mine won't go as smooth as this and i'll be covered in sanding dust :) whatever it takes i geuss !!!

I’ve had to learn how to do this with the help of videos such as yours because I’m finding in next to impossible to find anyone to do “small”jobs…. It doesn’t hurt to know how to DIY, saving money in the process. thanks for the link to tools, having the correct tool for the job is vitally important.

Hi Paul new to your channel. My Husband Dr Kirk is attempting to skim our upstairs bathroom. You have the perfect example in this video as the previous owner wallpapered directly to the drywall with what appears to be some contact cement or hide glue. It would not steam, soften with water or chemical - so we scrapped 1-inch sections at a time to keep from gouging the walls but still pulled copious amounts of brown paper loose. Thanks for the tips and the encouragement that we could make it better. PS just priming the walls made it 100 times better.

Been working for a contractor for almost a year and I haven’t been allowed to do much mudding. Wanting to learn to make myself much more well rounded and useful to him. Also so I can do more projects confidently around the house and them not be a halfassed DIY job because I thought I knew what I was doing.

Right on. I removed previous owners “Tuscan style” textured wall from our kitchen :/ That part was bad enough but the wall I was left with was close to what you see here. This is my first time doing this and with the tips I saw here I was encouraged I could, and indeed it is looking pretty good! Even my wife and one of my daughters were impressed haha.
