Many people drink bone broth to help heal by providing amino acids like glycine to aid in gut repair… But many bone broths contain ingredients that can be irritating the gut- the complete opposite of what we are hoping for! These ingredients are things like black and red pepper, both of which can cause microbleeding in the stomach when viewed with direct endoscopy… That’s not good! We also know that nightshade spices like paprika, and cayenne pepper can cause leaky gut by opening tight junctions between GI epithelial cells… If your gut is already inflamed, even things like onion, garlic and other spices can also cause issues… What’s the fix? Make your own bone broth!! How? Simple, take purified water (I use reverse osmosis water, no I don’t worry about it “pulling minerals” from my body, my food is FULL of minerals!) and combine with bones with connective tissue… Knuckle bones work best… Instant pot for a few hours, or crock pot for 8 hours and voila! You’ve got a simple bone broth that is rich in glycine and collagen (an three amino acid peptide usually composed of glycine, praline, and hydroxyproline)… If you really want to heal your gut combine this simple bone broth with and #animalbased diet of meat, organs (fresh or @heartandsoilsupplements) fruit, honey and raw dairy! Welcome to #theremembering

I’m interested in the fact that your bone broth is liquid, Paul. I make bone broth every month from my own animals, and it’s more dense than gelatin. If you’re using knuckles and it’s liquid, you’re cooking at too high a heat for too long and destroying the collagen bonds.

Spices never hurt anyone, the study he’s referring to is incredibly old and I’m not sure of the demographics and sample size used to determine external validity of the study, but the conclusion of the study if he read it properly is inconclusive on the long term effects and mentions that “The long-term result of daily pepper ingestion is unknown. Whether spices are detrimental, beneficial (e.g., inducing an adaptive cytoprotective response), or have no significant long-term effect on the gastric mucosa is unknown and deserves further study”. Many new studies have shown the benefits of spices such as black/red pepper and turmeric. It’s important when reading things that the intent be to learn and not to find information that supports your view. When taking anything for health, it’s vital to understand that moderation is key.

I would happily shit myself every day if it meant I could still eat peppers and nightshades. thankfully I do eat peppers and nightshades and don't shit myself very often so I don't think I'll be quitting delicious foods I enjoy!

What about the initial gray protein "gunk" that you usually boil out of the bones and throw away before you pressure cook them?
@thenecrons100

I think it's just blood. It turns up like this at high heat. When I boil clean bones, without blood, that gray stuff doesn't come out.

Generally considered harmless - cheffie types remove it if they want clear consume. I personally don't care.

It is coagulated blood and it turns dark. You would waste nutrients if you discard it, that's harmless. In Mexico we eat cooked blood and it tastes good 👍

I usually simmer it on low for 24 hours. Is there any benefit doing it that long?

Use a pressure cooker, it'd faster that way. Taste wise I feel it is more or less the same if u do it in pressure cooker or simmer it to even 48 hours. Nutritionally speaking, I'm not sure if there is any delta between the two

Yeah, but bones are expensive now. They used to literally give away bones at the butcher, and now a piece of trash cost $10 or $15. Time to hunt; and screw all of them.

You don’t boil it. You simmer at no higher than 180F over very low heat covered overnight on the stove.

I make this for my mastiff to keep his joints healthy & coat/skin shiny& healthy. I'll make mine in the crockpot for up to 18 hrs. I also add 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar as it helps to make the broth a jello type consistency which I scoop onto the dogfood. I make sure first to separate the jell from the fat. MadMaxMastiff loves it! Mastiffs grow rapidly so I have incorporated bone broth to his food since he was a pup.
