I find that in hobbies like this people tend to have a "If you dont know as much as me you shouldn't do it at all" mentality towards younger/newer people in that particular hobby. What they don't realize is that if young people dont get into the hobby ever, the hobby dies out. as a younger person it was nice to see how excited you were that you were reaching a younger audience and continuing the hobby. I already knew you were against gatekeeping from things you've said in your previous videos its good to see that you truley want whats best for the community

Yes! That old attitude is not welcome here. Those people forget they were once newbies themselves! I embrace the new and younger people and tend to irritate the grouchy ones. I am well hated by the gatekeepers, and proud of it. Merry CHRISTmas!!

Back in the 70's when I was a pre-teen our local Model A club would go across the Appalachian mountains to a local maple sugar festival in the early spring. I absolutely loved the sound of a dozen A's pulling the mountain. No matter the weather I would roll the window down on ours just to listen to them chugging along. What a fun video to watch. Really love the old Ford cars. FYI, I have a 1953 Ford 8N tractor with the inline flathead. So easy to opearate. It's just spark, and gas, that's it. Four plugs, and points, rotor, condenser. I use it every week to mow my 4 acres of grass, and in the wintertime, plow snow with a 6 foot pull behind blade. Cranks right up even in 10 below zero. Spark and gass, and you're good to go. Very predictable to start. No electronics.

You are right...the Model A Ford did have a unique sound of its own, I've been around for 88 years, and have ridden in quite a few different automobiles from the thirties, forties and fifties, and you know there were several automobiles that also had their own unique sound.......I bought my first car when I turned 16, a 1941 Desoto..then I purchased another car just for the fun of it, a 1928 Model A($50) and had a lot of fun with it for about a month or so , and sold it for more than I paid for it, and used the profit to improve my Desoto. Not a Model A guy , (just a passing appreciation; a museum I work with has one in their collection) but I had a couple thoughts. It’s interesting that you say the Aires muffler is much quieter, but the db meter shows almost the same levels on both mufflers when idling and revving. I believe the cheaper one did have a more peaks in the higher frequencies which tend to sound louder to humans. Another observation: I imagine over years and years of people driving A’s and when good aftermarket parts might not have been available, cheap muffler-shop exhausts probably were more common than original ones. So that’s what people have come to know as the Model A sound and the correct exhaust doesn’t sound like we expect an A to sound, so it sounds “wrong “ and we like it less. Just some musings. Great video.
@ModelA10 ай бұрын
Very keen observation! Yes, you are correct. The Aries muffler gets rid of all the high end sound that makes the cheaper one sound louder to the ear. That's what I was trying to show that I just can't put into words, so that's why I used the sound app and showed it.
@spitfeueranna9 ай бұрын
I wanted a model A, but opted for an 80's Honda Cruiser motorcycle instead. Faster, funer, higher mpg, sounds good, easy to work on too, a fraction of the price of a Model A, and I get those sexy spoked wheels... too. Which is what I really wanted.

Thank you, Paul. For some time now I haven't had enough time for videos. It's good coming back to your wonderful presentations, something like coming home in a way. I recall a couple/few years back that none of the Model A channels (that I knew of) had given much thought to Model A mufflers. I'd sent-in a written inquiry regarding details on the Model A mufflers for an upcoming Q and A sessions that you and Mr. Guimarin were doing at the time. Though my inquiry was answered, neither of you had much to say on the matter. Today, I was delighted in finding this "Best Sounding..." video here. And I'm glad that you've moved toward research and results regarding these very unique mufflers. The basis of my interest has always been "What is the source of their wonderful sound?" I'd like to hear more about them from you or an expert such as Mr. Guimarin. Perhaps an internal investigation, and if the original mufflers were made of Vanadium Steel, that sort of thing. And anything else you might be willing to offer. God Bless, You and Model T.

When I changed my exhaust manifold I tried ever whichaway to get the flange of my original down pipe to line up! I gave up and went to my local Exhaust shop they failed too, much to my surprise! Thanks for this! It would be educational to have a couple of "fly by" videos taken from the roadside while you drive past at, say, 40mph. The exhaust note is different under load, compared to revving with no load, and hopefully we're spending more time driving than sitting and revving. Do you know anything about the innards of those mufflers? I suspect that the quieter, more expensive one may have some fiberglass packing, which does wonders for reducing harsh, high-frequency sound waves and producing a deep mellow exhaust note. Again, thanks!

Paul, it is in your best interest to research how bad Fram oil filters are. Fram is all I used until I saw many tear down and comparison videos.
@allenfarmer64915 ай бұрын
Steven you are spot on, unfortunately for Fram that is ........I started selling automotive parts in 1955, and the company I worked for in Tucson, carried Fram oil filers....they were considered the premier filter . Later on in 1963, I was purchasing agent for a large automotive warehouse distributor in Los Angeles, and we sold Fram exclusively, still they were considered to be a premier fliter.....then in about 1980 a salesman from Wix came to see me .....he had me pull a Fram spin on from the shelf (Ph8) if memory serves me right, and he had the equivalent filers in other brands as well..Purolator, Hastings, AC and even an STP .......when he cut them open for comparison.....I couldn't believe my eyes.....it was a real eye opener......a few weeks later we had massive change over to the Wix filters in all three of our warehouses.......I've been retired from the automotive parts business now for 32 years, but still will only use a Wix filter on my automobile....sorry to take up so much space on my reply, but your comment on Fram pushed my memory button..and Paul, he's correct, believe me.

No, the black painted exhaust in your hand is mandrel bent, mandrel bending is draw forming while there's typically something inside holding the inside shape so it doesn't deform while it's being bent.... the uncoated mild steel one you have there is just bent on a pipe bender/tubing roller..... mandrel bending is good, what you actually want..... well, unless you're doing pie cuts, which are always preferred lol (for appearance, not for flow)

About 7 months ago I put a new Aries on my "31 Coupe and feel the Aries is way better when using engine compression to decelerate before applying brakes or going downhill. There is no popping at all, as there is much less restriction over the cheaper repro's. You get what you pay for in this case. At idle, sure at first the Aries was throatier ,a little more baritone (to me), but that has gone away over 1,200 miles of use, and really sounds good at full retard idle. I have to say Paul, that I prefer the sound of the more expensive muffler. And I would not say it is quieter then the cheap muffler, but I would say it has a lower rumble to it that sounds similar to an old John Deere tractor. That’s not saying that Tina’s car sounds like a tractor, but it has that lower tone of an old 4 cylinder tractor kind of like an old 4 cylinder Ford tractor or John Deere tractor. But then again some of those old model A and model T’s got turned into tractors.

I know exactly what you mean. Yep, you're right!

A fundamental four cycle ( granny ) cam is the dominant characteristic of the exhaust sound. I'd do it in 1 n 1/2 inch dairy stainless with a tractor muffler. No fuss no muss. That belly needs a big wirebrushing, painting, and undercoat.

Well, I thought I wanted a '57 Tbird when I retire, but maybe I want a good ol' Model A. 🤔😄 There is something very cool and relatable about "analog" technology that humans built way before all the bits and bytes and AI stifled most other forms of creativity and innovation.

I had to put a muffler on my 1999 Ford Ranger and the stock OEM muffler was nearly $200 - too much for a $500 junkyard built pickup. So I put the modern version of the classic Cherry Bomb glaspack. Quiet normally but roars when needed. Could Not ask for better.

I like the sound of the cheaper muffler too. Maybe because it has a more hotrod sound😂😂 What does Stella have? I met this guy who has an original 1931 Model A Roadster that lives near me. Making me think of starting a Model A Club of Hawaii. I’ll think more about it after I get Stella. To you and Tina, Mele Kalikimaka, Hau’oli Makahiki Hou!!

If you do start a club, I'd like to help you. being on the MAFCA board now, I can help directly. Your car has a cheap one (with modified flange and no exhaust leaks) and it sounds amazing. Merry CHRISTmas!!

Hi Paul! Happy holidays to you and Model T! Question, Easier to work on, a Model A or the VW Bug? Capt. Mikey.

I used to have a 1960 356B Porsche which as you know is very similar to a VW Beetle, and both the Model A and the Boxer engine is a good car to work on.
@ModelA11 ай бұрын
I have only worked one VW, but hundreds of Model As. Very similar experience, but the Model A just feels easier to me. I could be wrong. Merry CHRISTmas!!

When you were revving the engine with the cheep muffler, when it was decelerating it was popping quit allot. With the better muffler it didn't seem to do that... Maybe it has a little more back pressure, I think that's probably better for the engine and exhaust.
@ModelA10 ай бұрын
I think it was because of the lousy flange allowing cold air into the muffler.
@tonymiller882610 ай бұрын
@@ModelA Well now we have to see what the other one sounds like with the good flange.....

Howdy my grandpa was jay pearcy. He won the Henry ford award with his 1930 model a rumble seat. He passed away a few years ago and the car has sat. I’m familiar with working on motorcycles. What would be the best way about getting it roadworthy again?

You put the clamp on the top of the bottom frame rail. I just tried that with same muffler and clamp and the exhaust flange is tilted on the manifold so I moved it to bottom and flipped clamp which is how it was with previous muffler and clamp.

The way I did it is how they did it at the factory. Otherwise, the tailpipe is too low.
