Fabulous seeing you on Northlink Ferries, I used to work on the sister vessel mv Hjaltland, starting off as a steward then worked as the night barman right through the night until 6am.. they used to be better before Serco took over the catering..I think the cabin you stayed in used to be crew cabins, (forward) before they built new cabins a few decks above. The fish and chips are absolutely superb 😊

I've flown there often enough on my way to the oilfields, always hoping for a free stay, sometimes happens because of grounded helicopters. But never happened for me, never got beyond the airport.

Though now retired, I used to work in Hotel Management for over 40 years, so this is one similar concept I'd not sampled at all, and I was really impressed with what you showed. Until quite a few years ago, an ex-colleague of mine from a past hotel, actually worked for the same Ferry company in the role of Hotel Services Manager (or similar). Great to see what type of operational style he worked with.

Brought back lots of memories, in fact I thought you were in the same room as me, but I was in 421 haha. close. What a great place, I wish I had more time to explore further. I went to Shetland a couple of years ago. Skaw beach on Unst is worth a detour, as is Sumburgh Head (you have to drive across the airport runway to get there) on the mainland.

Amazing video, you were lucky with the weather. This ferry trip is on my bucket list. Too bad the ferry doesn't also go to my hometown Bergen. The distance between Bergen and Lerwick is almost the same distance as between Aberdeen and Lerwick

the problem with the executive cabins is they are right at the front of the ship. Which is ok on a flat calm night and an absolute nightmare in the slightest bit of motion. My top tip to anyone booking this trip is, if you think you might suffer from motion sickness in the slightest, avoid the executive cabins!
@walterfillinghamАй бұрын
You can see why they moved the crew cabins to the new units on the upper decks towards the aft, plus as the night barman I was constantly kept awake with unloading and loading on the car deck which was directly underneath, bearing in mind most of the crew are sleeping during the night. The constant banging every time we hit waves kept day shift awake.. after a couple of weeks it was very trying.. 😂

Wow, this is exactly the same trip that I took. I had a holiday cottage at Hermaness looking across Birrafirth. It was a trip of a lifetime. With the white sands beaches, terquose waters, and bright sun, you could be mistaken for thinking that you were in the Caribbean. If it were not for the temperature. We then walked to the cliff that faces to the lighthouse.

This looks a huge improvement from the only time I used the ferry, around thirty years ago, when my helicopter flight to Aberdeen was indefinitely delayed by fog. I had to spend the night in a chair, but at least it was direct to Aberdeen, not calling at Kirkwall. I had one flight that landed at Unst and someone said that it was the only place where the sheep try to get on the helicopter.

If you go to Orkney and Shetland, they feel and look like completely different places (Orkney generally flat and green fields everywhere), Shetland hilly and brown heather everywhere), plus the dialect different in both islands from each other (in Orkney they say Piddie for small, whilst they say Pirie for small in Shetland!) 😂
@ianlove1215Ай бұрын
This looks a great trip to do, the cinema is very well priced at £5.50. I had a look at their website & there is an option for what they call pods - reclining seats with tables & device recharge points.
@walterfillinghamАй бұрын
Just do what the locals do, take a sleeping bag and sleep in the Forward Bar which closes at 11pm (only open during the summer season - you can still sleep either on a comfy chair or the floor), does resemble a youth hostel, but it works. You don’t really get disturbed as only the night steward doing their duties during the night.

You mention a lot about this being nicer than it "needs" to be. I would disagree. The base fare is heavily regulated (politicians have to decide to increase them) and this fare alone would surely come nowhere near covering operating costs. The nice bits are absolutely core to how Northlink is viable, because on the whole people are happy to spend their money on the extras because it's a nice environment and said extras are good quality and reasonably priced. Obviously seat vs cabin would be the exception to this rule (if you're making the return crossing say, twice a month, four cabins is a lot of money), but the cabins themselves are profitable and would be less profitable if the ship were less nice.
@alexjohnson7355Ай бұрын
I thought Northlink were great the first time i sailed to Sheltand too. Try living here and your opinion will soon change 😂
