“You don’t want to put too much” - definitely true. ALL the excess gets blown out the water valve. Think of how much longer it lasts by using just enough. Takes a few times to figure out how much that is, but once you do, save your money and don’t use too much! I like slide o mix because it doesn’t seem to build up as much gunk as the creams
@andresarregui34178 ай бұрын
if you dont anything about trombones (my case), this video is gold. The furniture (the plant, the gree/white cord, the space...), clothes, expressions, the disdain, all aimed into the "slide" of the trombone. Paul, you are an artist.

It's true - a really smooth fast feeling slide does allow me to play better. More confidently! I use Slide-O-Mix too. Love the stuff.

Paul you are an amazing trombonist , I'm glad your channel exists !I was already motivated to become a great jazz trombonist but after watching your videos , you have opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that the instrument possesses! Keep up the good work :)

I think this is a good vid, Paul. The only things I might add especially for the less experienced trombonist, is that it can really pay to have a good repair tech work out any dents or bends in your slide if it isn't really smooth, and also if you might go a few days without playing, your slide might be a little smoother cleaning and lubing it before you pay rather than after. Love your work!
@kaimibiscaino4978 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with having a good slide makes you a better player. My slide has been a bit dry and it makes it pretty difficult playing certain tunes.

I picked up my trombone, after 20 years of not playing it, after I had the slide professionally cleaned. Made ALL the difference! I LOVE playing my trombone now!

@calebwoodhouse72278 жыл бұрын
The idea that you play better with a better slide is so true!
@geraldnichols27227 жыл бұрын
But---- remember that a LITTLE is better! [Because too much cream makes for more friction and slows down the movement and makes it seem like the slide is heavier.]
@ewanpotter49419 жыл бұрын
Slide-O-Mix is incredible, and I use the two bottle set, but I noticed that you didn't spray water onto your slide. Isn't that what your meant to do, because the water beads up when you spray it and then the slide runs on the water? Again, it may be a difference between the two in one bottle. Good video though, it's great to see people giving Slide-O-Mix attention, because it is an insanely useful product, and also demonstrating how to use it, because I've seen very little of videos like this on youtube. Thanks!

+1 for Yamaha slide lube
@geraldnichols27227 жыл бұрын
I agree, but with the caveat: All bones are different, and the players are too; therefore, no "one size fits all." What works for me [Yamaha] might not work for the next guy.

I've used slide-o-mix forever, but I found it was more of a hassle for me than it was useful. I have found that Yamaha slide lubricant is far more effective and easier to clean off my slide. I am interested in the slide-o-mix cleaning rod though

I've used superslick and water for years and as long as you wipe the excess lube off after you're done working it into the slide then you can reproduce the same results as what Paul is doing here. I don't know about Slide-o-mix but regular slide oil can damage your slide over time.

Do you recommend the original slide-o-mix (2 red capped bottles) or the 2-in-1 (black cap)? I've used both, currently the 2-in-1, but I'm still not sure which I prefer. I've also used Trombotine but I'm not a huge fan of slide creams...

I am a constant anal experimenter with my slides, and I have learned in 60 some years that it depends on the particular slide and the player. Currently, I am using SOM with a "touch" of REKA on top. When I use an old, worn slide, I need to use a heavier cream like Trombotine or Yamaha (in the toothpaste tube) with a dot of silicone perhaps.

Paul my man! I just tried your trick. My slide feels like the day I first bought it! A few questions though: 1. I like to use a spray bottle after the oil. Is that okay to do with this method? 2. I am noticing some more frequent slide noise when I move the slide. How do I fix that?

The Pond's Cold Cream of the 1950 era made one wonderful slide lube when just a pinch was added to a wter bottle. It was cheap and better than anything i have ever used. Sadly Pond's cold Cream changed their formula and the current cream is useless.

Why on God’s green earth would you put any slide mix on the top part of the slide. The only part of the inner slides that touched the outer part of the slide is the crook of the slide (the bottom part that bulges out). You put a little bit on the bottom and work in on the crook only. Anything else is just a waist of time and potentially slows down the slide. But this is something you already know because you know everything there is about the trombone.
