The funny part is that I’ve been playing my irons the exact same way for a long time, I thought I was doing something wrong, and the ball goes straight as an arrow, I can drive the ball a long ways but I find I’m killing it, maybe too much angle, so a least I can keep at it until I perfect it. Thanks for the help.

I’m a high handicapper and I have had to use the punch shot in lieu of my woods since I am inconsistent with the woods, the punch shot with a 5 or 4 iron gets me to the green a lot easier.

You can do that until there is a bunker in front of the green. This means you need to work on the other shots too. You can do it.

Paul great lesson.....are you releasing the club at impact with follow through...or trying to hold club square to target line as long as possible....the slow mo shot shows the club turning...but its held off like a 3/4 finish held...not over your shoulder to full finish...the body is still turning but you are in tune with your arms more......i guess that impact position is key...but you stil have to be accelerating through shot....
@paulwilsongolf14 күн бұрын
All I am doing is hinging and turning the hips to hit it. The descending blow stops the follow through. So I only go through a little. The grip and angle of the club is the key. That gives you the descending blow. Weight forward no shift.

Cool! That is a simplistic explanation of the technique to muster up the punch shot. The relationship (position) of the hands relative to the club face at impact gives me a clue to fix the hooks I frequent too. Awesome!

Paul - assume that the normal rotational principles of the swing you teach still apply. Lot of discussion about arms and hands here, which makes sense, but same application of hips and torso as in a regular swing?
@paulwilsongolf3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but for these shots I am not really thinking about it. My whole thought is to get the hands back to where they started. Plus, hitting the ground with the descending blow cuts off my follow through. So this one is a little more arms thinking than a normal swing.

@@paulwilsongolf just to add to what Paul said, into the wind with the driver I try being the most relaxed as possible. Sometimes you think you have hit the ball harder but that could just add more side spin which into the wind will make a fade a slice.

Paul, I often have to hit low punch shots under tree limbs on my course, shots that go 50 to 100 yards but get no more than a couple of feet off the ground. I struggle with pull hooks on that shot, so thanks for letting me know why. Even worse, though, is that I usually just pop it up in the air. I take like a 6-iron, set up exactly as you do here, make what feels like the same swing as you do here, but the ball just pops up in the air and into the tree. What am I most likely doing wrong to cause that? Any help would be appreciated more than you know...
@paulwilsongolf4 жыл бұрын
Glad you saw it. This will really help you. You need your hands ahead to deloft the club. You are doing a chicken wing adding loft. Hold the angle more.
@geauxtime3 жыл бұрын
So basically just body swing plus ball back in stance, shaft forward at address.
@paulwilsongolf3 жыл бұрын

Well, you need to go up and it's not going to go up there on its own. So keep in mind this is the backswing. Once you set the top you are not hitting or helping the shot in the downswing.
