The layers to this joke are amazing: -Being the personification of time, having Chronos negate the player's strongest form of time manipulation (pausing) shows the titan's power over his domain while also working as a good 4th wall break -The no-pause thing only being on the final boss as though the devs really didn't want you to step away from the final battle that the game had been building towards from the start -Chronos going from smug confidence to genuinely annoyed as you keep doing the thing you KNOW he can prevent -The fact there's an actual invocation you can get to prevent him from doing this, poetic rhymes and all -Having said invocation and actually pausing the game against Chronos STILL has him quip at you -Said quips starting with bafflement to how strong this incantation is... to quick annoyance as he now has to wait every time you pause -Chronos guessing that you've paused to go do something more important and/or use the bathroom -The sheer fact that the only way to actually see this joke in full requires you to pause against the final boss, buy an upgrade unlocked by pausing against them, then going ALL the way back down to fight him again to see the payoff It's so much effort for a gag most people won't see, and I think that makes it all the more memorable tbh

The Greek gods were not akin to a singular, unified religion today (which even then have different tellings of their doctrines) and as such, many stories blended or separated by retelling/locale/doctrine. Cronus, the titan, is often synonymous with Chronos, the personification of time. That is because Cronus inherently represented time to some degree (the changing of seasons, harvests, the golden age). Also, with his sister Rhea, it's likely they were both named after streams/flows (rivers, time). So they're not really all that distinct, and with how closely they meld in many tellings, or many philosophers of the time outright saying they were the same entity, you can't really correct someone for saying Chronos is the titan of time (especially when the entire premise of the game is that Chronos is the titan of time and father of Zeus)

my personal favorite instance of that (which coincidentally is also specifically taking away the ability to pause) is in Lobotomy Corporation, where you'd typically make frequent use of a pause button and other time controls to get through the day, only to have a boss that simply kills your agents whenever you pause.

For the entire game you have an "Son" button to tell Atreus to do something, but after a certain point, he'll start doing things on his own and even picking fights with dormant enemies nearby. Shit's great

Another SuperGiant game, Transistor, does something similar with one of their boss fights. The player can pause the game and basically 'queue up' actions (moving, casting skills, etc.) and then when they unpause they execute those actions. This one boss, though? He's got the same abilities and uses them to take the first 'turn' of the fight. "Who gets to go first? How about... *me*." (Game world pauses and you can't do shit)

I love how everyone is impressed with this gimmick. It was used in another game called Lobotomy Corporation (And its direct sequel). Also, back in the 2000's, I had to fight the "Time Devil" in Blinx: The Time Sweeper. That fella was able to pause, slow, accelerate and "record" time in its final boss fight... Gosh I miss that game.

I then laughed because the interaction was very funny and then told him that I could not pause because he was the god of time and could prevent me from pausing. I think my favourite Chronos interaction is one that the game doesn't call out: In one of the post-Hecate dialogues with Chronos, he says "How very spirited! You truly think you can stop Time. But thankfully not the projectile slowdown from Hermes. Had that one randomly go to Heroic bc of a trinket effect and it slowed his disk and other stuff by 60%. Which is so slow that you can easily do a damageless first phase.

That’s really neat. I remember Blasphemous had a similar but more severe thing for Isidora, Voice of the Dead, where if you tried pause the game would simply tell you: “The Song of the Dead cannot be stopped”.

He also negates the effect of any time slowing abilities you may have, such as the arcana card providing slowdown during Omega charging or the Moon Hex which slows time, exclusively for himself. Everything else still moves slowly.
