Pavarotti never seen before taping Part 2 Il Barcaiolo

The great tenor taping Il Barcaiolo in Modena, Italy, 1987. I was studying at the time with his teacher Arrigo Pola and got to spend some time with the great tenor. I have had these outtakes for 30 years but was never sure if I should make them public. I do so because they are fun and show how Luciano was simply marvelous.

Thank you. Very interesting. What was he talking about at the beginning. "Put it against the wall, not like this like this."? He seems nervous! And he sings quite hard- mezzo to forte. What was the program these were being taped for? Any other informations or recollections would be very welcome and appreciated !

He is telling the guy holding the cue cards with the words to the song to keep them straight so he can read the words which he hadn't memorized.

All was forced, voice in trouble

We should all have such trouble with our voices! In his master classes for Julliard from the 1980's, he spoke about days when the voice didn't cooperate. He said at first give it rest, and then, later, 'you must force'. When you're on a filming schedule, I imagine it is harder to give the voice a rest, and perhaps there wasn't sufficient time to get his voice to the mark. I enjoyed his singing, but it did look hard for him in this, which is very unusual for Luciano, who seemed to be able to open his mouth and beautiful sound came out effortlessly.
