I like the idea of using the textile between the sand layers. I wish I would have done that on my last project. I will for sure remember that next time. Thanks, Glenn! Looking forward to the next video in the series!

Great step by step tutorial, especially as I am also doing it by myself as well. I’m still confused, however, on materials. I have Earth Essentials paver base (gravel) and Earth Essentials paver sand…a sandy mixture of sand and stone. Do I need additional type of sand for in between the pavers?

Can you use any kind of paver on top of these base panels, like interlocking flagstone types?

Big fan of your videos and your general approach to everything landscaping.I have a small paver project in my backyard and was wondering if you do private consulting? I have gained enough confidence(thanks to your videos), but have a few issues that require someone with some real experience

Thanks... I like sharing what I've learned. I still do some landscape consultations, but I'm booked for the year and not taking on any new clients currently. You can always leave a question here or over on Instagram and I can do my best to help out from afar. Best!

When did you do this when it wasn’t 100° or hotter? Pretty cool to see. I didn’t realize there was two layers of different sand for the Gator base.
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't... it was a hot project! You don't have to have two layers of sand for Gator Base. I needed some type of material to bring the sub-base up to grade. The screened pit run sand compacts easy, easy to work with and is a very cost affective choice.

Am I too late to ask a question? I am putting in 3x6 foot paver mini patio for a park bench. I am only daring to try this because I found these base panels and am wondering whether I can just use a big paving stone (7x10) to tamp the sand? I'm reluctant to buy a tool I will only use once for such a small project. And since it's only six feet long and out in the yard, does it need to slant or should I make it level? Thanks for a great video!

Excellent Work and craftmanship.. I live in MN.. Can i do the paver base here. Also what did you do for subgrade.
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you.. for this garden path all I did for subgrade was pack the existing topsoil and bring to grade with some pit run, unsreeded, sand. The Gator Base replaces six inches of crushed rock base. Yes, you can do paver base in Minnesota for a pedestrian installation.

I saw your project on Hometalk and I have some questions. When you were planning the circular portion of your pathway, did you take into consideration the width of the bricks so you wouldn't have any cuts? Also with the grade, is there a rule of thumb as to where the direction of drainage should go? Thanks!! I really love this project and would like to do this for my walk from front door to driveway.
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question... with a circle there will be cuts no mater the size. The size was determined more from the setback needed for the future pergola from the property line. Which was 5 feet allowing for a perfect 14 foot diameter circle. A simple rule of thumb on drainage is away from structures, house or garage. A walk like this would be great for a front enterance. best of luck with your project!

I've seen C-144 YELLOW sand. Very yellow. Do you recommend this kind of sand? Do you know of any harm of using certain type of sand when having a WELL nearby? Thanks!

nice job! i have a walkway that has drainage issues. should i use gravel as a sub base or can i use masonry sand?
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 2 жыл бұрын
use gravel or some type of crushed aggregate to provide structural base... masonry sand is not recommended because of it's similar granular size making it to easy to migrate and cause base failure. try to provide a low point for water to drain away. thanks

So basically you still have to put a base down when using these pads? I was hoping to only put an inch of sand then the pads. But you put 4” then weed control then another so much of sand. I usually use 4” of ground basalt compact then sand and pavers right on top. I was thinking buying the pads would save adding that first layer
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on your beginning elevations. I need to add sub-base to bring my elevation up to match in some areas. For example a patio off the back of a house could be in an area where it was graded flat so all you would need to do is take out a couple inches and your good to go. No need to add and compact a big base once your sub-base is set.

Say a bit more about the poles used to install the second layer of sand? Is that just to set the depth of the sand, and they are removed as you go?
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 3 жыл бұрын
yes... the poles are for setting the thickness of the sand layer. those are metal conduit EMT that have an outside diameter of one inch. just about anything will work. small pieces of woul coul be cut to the desired depth and used. the are called a screed rail. I slide the rails in the direction that I'm laying the sand and fill in the void as they are moved. thanks for the question!

So the stakes with the depth markings were just for the excavation & first sand layer, and were removed once you started putting down the fabric? What keeps the bottom sand layer from being incorporated into the underlying soil?
@WorkshopatTheGardens
@WorkshopatTheGardens 3 жыл бұрын
realistically nothing... but it is a different grade of sand. The bottom layer of sand was pit run... so it has all the different sizes of aggregates. I believe it was screened 1" minus. So the natural characteristics will keep it in place unlike the washed sand which can migrate more easily because of the uniform size. that's why you encase in the fabric. My next install will use a 3/8" minus chip granite and will offer a bit more structure. Thanks for the question!

@@WorkshopatTheGardens Great video but now seeing your answer here I don't get it. For the bottom layer of sand, why not just use roadbase with stone dust fines? What makes the pit run sand different, especially you mention that these sand have small rocks in it and you prefer it that way for "more structural integrity"? Isn't that just roadbase with extra steps? How thick is the bottom layer of sand, looks like more than 1". Thank you for your answer!

Will this shed water away from my foundation for instance ? Or is this technique not a water proof technique?

The panels have some drainage to them, but mostly your paves will redirect the majority of the water if the prep work is sloped properly
