Hey Everyone,
We are back in the Lake District National Park again.
This time to do Pavey Ark (700m) It's been on my to do list for quite some time.
Pavey Ark is one of the Langdale Pikes, lying to the north of Great Langdale. Jack's Rake is probably the most famous ascent of the Pavey Ark precipice and this is the route we are going to take in this video.
Once we reach the top we should get some great views down the Langdale Valley and over towards Lake Windermere too.
Jack’s Rake is a Grade 1 scramble. It is a fantastic hands on route up the face of Pavey but it dose require a head for heights and is quite steep in places. It should only really be attempted in good weather and should definitely be avoided in wet conditions as most of the rock is very polished.
Our route starts off from the National Trust carpark near the New Dungeon Gill Hotel. We make our way up towards Stickle Tarn following the bank of Stickle Gill where we stop for lunch and take a little look at the map before we head up the Rake itself.
Our route down is via Harrison Stickle (736m) where we stop for a final look around in the light of the setting sun before we head back down to the van.
Distance of the route taken in this video is approximately 6.5 km and should take around 3.5 to 5 hours.
I do hope you enjoy the video
All the very best
Mike

Hi Jennifer, I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you’re able to give this hike a go if you haven’t done it already as it’s a lovely route. Just be sure not to do the rake section of the route in wet conditions as it would be extremely slippery. Thank you so much for giving the video a watch and also for dropping me a comment. It’s very much appreciated. All the very best, happy hiking. Mike

Hi Mike, if you remember we discussed whether I should I get a Mavic to record our walks. Well I've decided it would be a waste of time. I'm going to let you go up all of my favourite walks and record them for me. You do such a great job of job of it I couldn't possibly better you. And I'm impressed that you have to do the walk twice! Once to climb up and the second to go back and retrieve you're camera for every shot. Another great video, I really appreciate the work you put into them. Hopefully our paths will cross again in the future.

@FurrychalkbagOutdoors
@FurrychalkbagOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Haha no Maggi I’m not a mountaineer🙂 I am however a very keen and active rock climber and have been for quite a number of years so exposure doesn’t really affect me. I’m perfectly fine with exposed scrambles. This particular one isn’t too bad in good conditions. But it does require a little bit of steep scrambling in places. I would probably give it a miss if you are a bit queasy with heights😬

@@FurrychalkbagOutdoors We most definitely would never dream of going near anything like it! I hate heights but, i have conquered a lot of my height fears since mountain hiking but my knees are restricted on our chosen descents! I am however proud of my achievements this year! I have faced so many things that i have never done before in all my 71 yrs! We did snowdon twice in 3 days, after training for 4 months! We haven't stopped peaking since! lol. Amazing feelings it gives both of us! 😁

@@maggi666 Snowdon twice in three days is without doubt an amazing achievement.!! Well done indeed to you both.!!👏 Yes the descent is always hard on the joints. Walking poles help a lot. I always bring a pair for a friend of mine if he comes along with me on a walk, as he suffers real bad with his knees due to playing football for most of his life. Good to hear you plan your walks in advance. So happy you’re both enjoying yourselves up in the hills. Yes it is a great feeling you get when you’re out there. Another cracking video Mike . I was lucky enough to do this route last autumn with my son and a couple of friends .... really enjoyed it even though i had the trembles on a couple of times ! We did Striding edge and Swirral edge the following day so it was an adrenaline fuelled weekend for sure . I'd be interested to hear how you feel Sharp edge compares to Jacks Rake and Striding edges as i haven't tackled Sharp edge as yet ? Keep up the great work with Videos , really enjoying them .
@FurrychalkbagOutdoors
@FurrychalkbagOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Dave , I’m so pleased you enjoyed it. It is a fantastic route up Pavey isn’t it.!! I actually enjoyed it more than Sharp Edge. I think Jack’s Rake is steeper in places than Sharp Edge but you do have the benefit of rock on both sides of you for the majority of the climb where on Sharp Edge you are a little more exposed. Both are just as polished and both should be avoided in the wet obviously. I would say there is a lot more actual climbing involved in Jack’s Rake than the other two. If I was to take a beginner on all three I would probably start them off on Striding followed by Sharp Edge and then Jack’s Rake just because of the amount of climbing involved in the latter. However you are more exposed on Sharp edge like I’ve said. All are great routes but I think Jack’s Rake is my favourite among all three of em. Would definitely not like to do Jack’s Rake on a busy day though as there isn’t really a lot of safe passing places😬 Thanks again for giving the video a watch. Let me know what you think of Sharp Edge after you’ve ticked it off🙂 Keep super safe Mike

Thanks so much for the great vid. Hopefully can now try and persuade my slightly over protective parents, who did Jack’s Rake when they were younger, to let me scale it. I’m presuming it should be ok as I’ve done Toreador Gully before on Haystacks before and a few other scrambles like Sharp Edge and Striding Edge. Would you recommend, taking into account possible dangers and the rest?
@FurrychalkbagOutdoors
@FurrychalkbagOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Hi Rowan, Thanks for the comment🙂 I personally don’t see it any harder or dangerous than Sharp Edge. So if you were quite ok with SE then you should be ok with JR. There is a dodgy step across that has to completed but after that it’s pretty much ok. There maybe a little bit more climbing involved than Sharp Edge but most of it is inside a small gully. Just make sure you do it on a very dry day as there is always a bit of seepage out of the rock. Thanks for watching my video, I hoped it helped🙂 Happy hiking Mike
