I think this clip is edited. Seems to be some cut away shots, and the full version is when it originally aired with the episode. Therefore probably didn't show him checking out the numbers.

In general old cars are like a baby. Need to be lightly driven daily. Oil changed even if not driven much, kept in certain weather free conditions, these cares are over 50 years old, titles are a nightmare unless the owner has them. Original parts are insanely hard to find. Its literally like getting a time share. You gotta pay for maintenance and other crap. Its easier to let someone else do it.

I like how the mechanic just pops the hood and says "yep, everything looks good" and closes it. Didn't have the engine running, didn't check any of dipsticks for burnt fluid or leaks. Didnt look at the VIN numbers around the car to make sure the entire car is from the same VIN and not pieced together from different fastbacks. Didn't look under the car for rust or fresh welds. Then he happens to know exactly what the car is worth in all the markets across the country and to top it off he doesn't even test drive it as part of his inspection. He let's Rick drive it so any subtle ticks or vibrations in the pedals or steering wheel the mechanic won't be able to feel. Amazing.

If you go back over some of these shows - you catch on to the fact that he's got a big client database He finds things for his clients. And when something unique and expensive comes in, he'll call that client before he buys it. chances are he had the Shelby sold before he bought it We're not seeing all the action behind the scenes I remember American Pickers went out to specifically look for a car for Rick and the pawn shop, who brought it to Rick's Restoration to have it done... and I think it was a gift for the old man besides Jeopardy, those are just about the only shows I watch. On the internet. I'm off grid - no TV American Pickers also have clients that ask for specific things - Rick's gone to a coin show just to seek out a specific coin for one of his clients - he takes a finder's fee I do this in business - because if the transaction goes through me twice, I pay taxes twice. So you make the transaction between the original seller and the intended buyer - you simply take the finder's fee The other thing you're not hearing from the sellers on the big items? A lot of these things have already been to auction. They put it on reserve - when it doesn't hit reserve it doesn't sell. The seller did fine - calculate the 30% auction fee, the transport insurance and cost. He got his 100k. He immediately went down to 105 k look at the grin on his face. That's what he wanted Without the hassle or risk the vehicle not hitting Reserve at the auction Rick has a huge database of buyers and sellers - he's better off doing a finder's fee than paying taxes twice, storing it, risking damage, waiting for a buyer... I think he had this sold before he bought it I'm curious as to who's going to inherit that Client List. It's a fun show... Enjoy
