A lot of people who were against this change were comparing it to Dr. Suess's "Sneetches" story, claiming Elon is just trying to make a quick buck off of a meaningless mark. They used the story to make fun of anyone willing to pay the $8, comparing them to the suckered Sneetches. Those same people, however, seemed to forget that in that story, the Sneetches who had stars before the salesman came wanted a sign of superiority over the other Sneetches, which is why they valued their stars. Once the other Sneetches were able to get stars, the previously star-bellied Sneetches valued not having a star. Yes, this situation is exactly like the Sneetches, I just wish people understood what that story was actually about.

All of this reminds me of the Sneetches, one group had stars, the other did not. At one point in the story, the ones who didn't have stars got them, which made the ones who had them mad, so they got theirs removed. The individuals who are verified are making money off of the site, so Twitter should be able to charge them for the service.
