iPhone Speaker Sounds Muffled? An Apple Tech's Fix!

You guys, I just ordered a new iPhone 13 because my phone speakers have been busted and I genuinely could barely hear anything! Like it was severely affecting work calls. I followed all of the steps, and then took an alcohol swab after using a VERY soft toothbrush, restarted my phone twice, and my phone speakers are just like when I bought it! I could cry! Thank you!

You guys are the best, and you help keep it simple for older, non-techies like me. I just want to let you know something. I opened up developer settings on my excellent Samsung S10, and reduced animation times.The phone was noticeably snappier! However, it is not recommended by Samsung that you leave developer mode on all of the time, and when you close them, the animations setting returns to the original, slower setting. Your videos on battery saving techniques have increased my daily screen time by an hour and a half per day! Thank You!

Just a note, my speaker holes were BLOCKED. A toothbrush didn't do it, so I thought they were broken. But I checked with a magnifying glass. You SHOULD see a tiny grill, so I had to use a pin and magnifying glass to clean all the speaker and mic holes they said. Made it much better!

This is a great tip! Be careful using anything sharp or metallic to clean out your speakers. An unused toothbrush or an anti-static brush is great for cleaning out your iPhone!

Hi, I have an SE 2020 and the top speaker often becomes distorted. I have found the best way is to stick a piece of electrical tape over the speaker, and then peal it off. This tends to remove the crud that has gotten in there. I find that thishas consistently sorted my problem. This happened to previous phones, I wish I was aware of this sooner, as it would have saved me many trips to the Apple Store. Toothbrushes will work as well of course.

I want to recommend something for you who have tried everything, but still got low volume during calls. I’ve had it and tried everything and was ready to have it repaired. But stubborn as I am I gave it another shot and it solved the problem! So here’s the solution: the speaker crease on top was filled with dirt. I though I removed it all but now that I looked really close, I could see that the tiny tiny mesh actually was clogged up with dirt. So it was not only a “cake” on top, but actually in between the fine mesh. What I did is I took a wooden toothpick and just gently scraped it against the mesh surface, back and forth many times. Each time dirt came loose. I did that many times til no more dirt releases. When you look really up close after, you should be able to see the holes in the fine mesh. And voila; my call speaker was as new again! Spread the word!

If you have to “scrape” stuff off your phone, use an otter box and don’t touch it with dirty hands.

@@MrsMilien you don’t get it. An otter box is no protection against dirt in the speaker and microphone. It’s as open there as any old phone case. This is not because of dirty hands, this is usually layers and layers of different dirts, from your pockets, etc etc.

If you are reading this and tried all the advice but nothing works, go the the genius bar at your local apple store. I made the mistake of going to an authorized dealer first, they replaced the ear speaker but the volume was still low. The techs at the genius bar have a special diagnostic tool to test the audio. Mine failed. They ended up replacing the whole display on my iphone 8. I was just out of warranty so it was $140. Works great now. One of the few times I wish I had gone to the apple store first.

Yes the brush trick works to remove 6 years of XR gunk . Used a toothpick but be careful not to damage the mesh , if you can’t see the mesh with magnifying glass then you need to clean those speakers , I used brush too after wooden toothpick gently.. The sounds so clear as during Covid I used to wipe my phone with disinfectant wipes and the pocket gunk probably stuck and the sound was weaker and weaker . It sounds like new . Thanks guys , I’ve learnt something new .

Most likely it has to do with your speakers, they might have loosened or partially disconnected. You have to take it to a store and repair it

Or if the sound is kind of Muffled and lowered go into clock set an alarm and put it on an alarm on full volume. This is what helped me.

I had muffled sound out of my XS Max ear speaker, I turned it off, cleaned it with a tooth brush and then I sprayed it with CRC Quick Dry Electronic Cleaner, let it dry for about 30 min and the sound improved. The next morning the sound was better than improved it was back to normal!!

Mine was mufffeld a I shut it down I go in generals in sounds and I play with the ringer sound and the shut it down again and housed my toothbrush to brush it gently and it started working perfectly !!THANKS❤️ .

Cleaning with a toothbrush restored it probably 70-80%. I used a lot of hand sanitizer on my phone over the last 5 months and I think it clogged the top speaker a bit. Maybe with a little more cleaning or a solution to break down the residual left from the sanitizer it will be 100% again. Regardless it’s night and day difference. Thanks for the video.

With my iPhone 5 & 6 I tried all what you said but I can’t hear a call unless I turn on speakers. The volume is too low to converse comfortably. On the other hand my new iPhone 11 is just fine and comfortable to hear without turning on the speakers! Are all iPhone 5 and 6 have same problems! A very cheap phone has better and louder sound than iPhone 5& 6. Now I want to donate these two old phones to needy students in these pandemic situations but can’t give them because of this inbuilt fault! Please suggest ! I am from 🇮🇳 India.

You said that mono should be off. That statement is true for those that can hear out of both ears. My left ear is deaf so I only use one air pod. If I leave the mono off, I will be missing some of the audio as while in a stereo the device will send most of the audio to both ears but will also send some of the audio to only one ear and some different audio only to the other ear to make it seem as if the sounds or some of it comes from a different direction. So by turning mono on I get all the sounds to my working ear and do not miss anything

Turning on the mono audio settings helped me as well, though in the video was told that it should be off. I have a new iphone 11, so it means that with the stereo sound is some problems with the iphones, eigther hardware or software problem.
