Why do the Vikings have such a loyal fan base? It all started with Bud Grant.

I am a Denver Broncos fan and I have never loved a Head Coach outside of our organization more than Mr. Bud Grant. The more I learned about him the more I felt wiser about his character away from football and how well that implemented to his coaching style. When he speaks, you listen. The world lost an inspirational figure that speaks volumes of what it means to be human and healthy. "I get more satisfaction providing for my family than I ever did coaching a football game." - Harry Peter Grant Jr.

I've read some comments about the initial announcement of Bud's passing, asking if anyone was truly "shocked" about the death of a 95- year old man. My response was "A Normal 95 year old? No. Bud Grant? Yes."

One-of-a-kind. I miss him coaching the games - but what I miss the most is his philosophy on life - and how he was so good at living life. That to me says it all - family first - good person - didn't rip people off and told it like it is. Classy. KOC has his work cut out for him because Bud never gave corporate responses - he just told you what he thought.

As a Wisconsin native, and a Green Bay Packer fan since 1966, it is with much sadness, and with the deepest respect, that I note the passing of Coach Grant. This was an extraordinary man of wisdom and dignity whose greatness, as both a leader and as an individual, transcended his team and sport. May God bless his family, friends and the many fans in Minnesota and elsewhere who mourn his loss. RIP Mr. Grant. Reply

Bud left Winnipeg 6 years before I was born. But Bud is still an icon in these parts some 57 years later. He brought class to the Blue Bombers and Vikings. Putting his players through anthem practice, the man wanted his teams to be the NY Yankees of football. It didn't matter what side of the border his team played on, he just wanted to win. Long live the Bud Grant era's of both of his football teams. I'm just happy he got to see the unveiling of his bronze statue way up north, before it was too late. Than You Bud 👍

true. Bud lost his games to other undisputed greats though, and that's why he is great too. No shame at all on losing to the likes of Hank Stram, Don Shula, Chuck Noll and John Madden. Just to get there he had to compete against George Allen and Tom Landry.

@@baberRuth Smoked halibut i find your comment very stinky to say the least. before you jump all over someone you should have your facts straight. you're dead wrong about me being born after bud retired. i've been a fan since 1969 when i was 8 years old. i watched all 4 sb losses and have watched all the heartbreaking playoff losses since then. and all these losses hurt because if losing playoff games and 4 sb's doesn't hurt then you're not a true fan. i love bud grant and what he meant to the vikings and feel bad that they didn't win a sb for him and he couldn't see the vikings win an sb before he passed away.

Being named a pro football coach for the first time literally saved his life. The plane that he was supposed to take back home to MINNESOTA, was not the one that he took, because he had to change his plans and take an earlier flight in order to meet, all of a sudden, unbeknownst to him, with WINNIPEG officials there who offered him the head coaching job after future NY GIANTS head coach ALLIE SHERMAN was fired at WINNIPEG. The contract offer was a player-coach position that he turned down until he could strictly be the head coach, although he wanted a one year deal to give him the opportunity to go back to being strictly a player if coaching did not work out. He ended up signing a two-year deal and never played, again. Meanwhile, the plane he traveled on obviously arrived in Winnipeg safely. The one he was supposed to take from the CANADIAN ALL STAR FOOTBALL game that he had just played in..in VANCOUVER... crashed into the side of a mountain killing every passenger on board in the late AUTUMN of 1956. COACHING SAVED HIS LIFE.. LITERALLY.

Bud Grant was incredibly smart not to accept the HC job for the Vikings when ownership first was awarded the franchise. By the time he did accept the HC job in Minnesota in 1967 (after Norm Van Brocklin was fired) the losing years that proceeded his hiring gave the Vikings a huge number of first-round draft picks that allowed for the drafting of most of the HOF defensive players that would dominate the NFL in the late 60s and well into the 1970s.
