I religiously listen to you guys to get in touch with current events outside of medicine, so its so interesting to hear you guys discuss what goes on in my world. Because of the increasing popularity of GLP1 agonists, patients who really rely on these meds to maintain their diabetes don't have access to them bc of drug shortages.

I want to plug the Maintenance Phase podcast for anyone that wants to learn more about diet culture, obesity, weight loss, etc. It’s an impartial and HIGHLY researched show that sort of debunks the idea of “the obesity epidemic.” As a fat person, it helped me a lot. That’s all!!

Yes!! 100000x co-sign. The ep on the French Diet is so good. Busting the myth that all Europeans are naturally skinny and exist in societies without fat people, or fat phobia and its resulting EDs, was so enlightening(and honestly a little reliving). Given that, the EUs approval/denial of the semaglutide drugs will come with its own social/political biases.

The line for what exactly is “obese” or “overweight” is ever subjective and changing. BMI is known to be unreliable because of how it doesn’t apply to so many different body types. The first I ever heard of people using the diabetes-version of the medicine to lose weight was when it was getting popular in Hollywood because wealthy people were using it to go from being average sized to being noticeably thin. I would never ever expect a weightloss drug to be prescribed responsibly.

The thing Ben was reading about Eli lily being in rural Indiana isn't about their employees staying at work for long hours but rather that their employee retention is tremendous because there isn't anywhere near them where someone could switch jobs without uprooting their entire life and moving across the country. Their attrition rate last year was 10%, average is 18%, and just when googling those randomly read also that replacing a specialized Healthcare professional typically costs twice their yearly salary too.

Less car centric infrastructure has a very large impact on health and obesity that people don’t really realize. Plenty of countries in Europe people just walk more. I think regulating food is also part of it but the best thing for health is regular activity.

It is an uniquely American issue in that the food production and manufacturing industry is lobbied to hell, making sure there's as little regulations and as low standard as possible, un-walkable cities and towns, reliance on automobile, a culture of over working and then over indulgence to compensate, preventative measures are often overlooked, etc Then, you've got the body positivity movement, which on the one hand completely makes sense in terms of humanising fat people and fighting toxic diet culture etc, but on the other hand it is also essentially a cultural reaction against a government and a system that not only aren't interested in protecting its people, but thrive off of their subjugation, so when you go into the far end of this you have celebrated over-eating and obesity.

I started on Ozempic cuz I am 45, diabetic, obese, and I have a chronic pain condition with a starring cast member of a back injury that healed wrong. My Dr wanted me to have gastric bypass when my son was 3, 10 years ago. After the class I was required to take beforehand, I chickened out. I'd much rather take my chances with these drugs (lost 40lbs so far, become much more mobile, eating way healthier, AND my a1c is 5.7) than having a major surgery that could easily kill me.

I'm cautious like Emil about Ozempic. I recently asked my internist about it out of curiosity and while she listed a lot of the benefits the muscle mass loss came up as well. She said that's why when people who don't have a regular workout regime (specifically weight-bearing exercise) stop taking Ozempic they sometimes gain even MORE weight back because a lot of it is that muscle returning. I don't know if the majority of people taking it for weight loss are also preserving that muscle while on it

Exactly. The extreme side effects of GLP-1s are really outliers. There are medications with much more severe side effects that people spend their whole lives on. People just have an opinion on these meds because they don't think fat people should be able to lose weight with "help."

Anyone who's ever had dietary restrictions for health reasons in the US that pertain to sugar know how insanely insanely hard it is to consume zero to even low amounts. It is truly in everything. Most healthier eaters I know are equally frustrated at how sweet and salty everything is here. It's just very diificult to avoid. You either get all or none. As far as the weight loss drug, if this drug slows digestion and your body is suppose to use the digestive process to pull energy from the food, it would seem like there would be clear issues with any of the byproducts of the food they consume if it's slowing down your digestion to 18 + hours.

Think about it this way, cardiovascular risk will decrease because those who take it will be consuming less cholesterol & saturated fat by eating less food. But your body also needs fuel for muscle & proper function. And as a nurse in the cardiovascular icu, I see people who have cardiac disease eat plenty of foods that are unhealthy and irritating to the body.

Love you boys. The theme song however I do not love lol maybe I'll feel different once you have an opening sequence for it, but it just feels long and muddied which is weird cause it's only 30 seconds. Also, I personally don't think you need to make another popping intro sequence just because your last "show that will not be named" had one. I would even cut this song down to a 5-10 sting and just have your logo animate in. Almost like Broad City style title intro, just get right into it. Just some food for thought I love your show!

It’ll be interesting to see what the effects of longterm GLP-1 RA use will be, considering the incidence of medullary thyroid cancer in rodents and incidentally in a human patient (thus the black box warning). I also worry about the frenzy around “weight loss at any cost” in the US, especially with the American Academy of Pediatrics saying doctors can offer weight loss drugs to kids as young as 12 that are diagnosed as obese and bariatric surgery for kids as young as 13. That people equate lower body weight with health just really grinds my gears.

@@benandemilshow it looks like I'm the only one who's said anything about it so maybe it's just me. personally the two headshots being cropped differently is slightly weird (one of them not being a little deer-in-the-headlightsy as well) and the background is hard to decipher with so much being covered besides "fat profits". in my completely unsolicited opinion, just as someone who's a fan of the show, it might look better as a combination of this one and the previous thumbnail. the background of the previous one was just more eye catching and fit in with the previous episodes more, this one feels a little empty and maybe just crop a *little* less of emil's shoulders out. again, it looks like I'm the only one who has said anything about not liking it so it is totally possible that it's just me being dumb. I've been watching since the first episode of the previous show that I can't seem to remember the name of and have enjoyed every episode since, including this one, the new thumbnail is the only thing that has felt off about the episode
