Perhaps they were better live, but I've never seen them live. TV (and certainly at the time of day they were on, being pre-watershed) placed constraints on the material they could perform. The trouble was that they came in the wake of Morecambe & Wise, and The Two Ronnies, both of whom made great television as double acts. And as they say, when you've had gold ...

It's November 2020 and watch these two in the 80s on Saturday nights with my family. They are still as funny now as they was all those years back. These were the days my 80s childhood tv, Britain in them days only had 4 channels so viewing figures for all the entertainment shows were up to 30 million. Also in them days if you had your own show or became a singer you were simply meant to be , these two like all artists in them days started out in rough clubs every Saturday and was found by tv channels unlike these days where tv is shit reality tv creating celebrities who are famous for fuck all and the volume of songs written and produced for so called artists these days is shocking and they call them superstars ..take me back ..take me back
@andyq7524 жыл бұрын
Cannon and Ball were on TV before Channel 4 started, so there were only 3 channels!
@andrewsmith27573 жыл бұрын
@Nigel Kent - Channel 4 started on 2nd November 1982. I'm not sure if Cannon & Ball made any Channel 4 appearances or not. There's too many TV channels nowadays for reasons already stated in the top comment.

On a plane in 1984 to Las Palmas...Bobby was a terrified air passenger... stood up by the door all the way smoking one-after-another (back in the days when you could smoke on planes) never sat down for 4 hours... had a few drinks then kept us all entertained with gag-after-gag... I was at the same resort as him and met every night for drinks and a bloody good laff!! RIP Bob... Pip!

I have memories not only seeing them, and loved watching them in the 80s,but also of working with them,i(n a play written by Bobby),that was the last time was just over 3 yrs ago, they should have been at our theatre in April,postponed to just two weeks ago,and of course didnt happen, and it never will now...but I have my piccie of the last time...another entertainer who would have been working right up to the end,had theatres not been closed..He could also play the piano, and gave us a few tunes during the free time,after set-up etc:..I sadi to him, do you fancy moving on the Compton Organ next...he replied said "Ill give that a miss".,
@rael19994 жыл бұрын
There's a reason there's no great double acts anymore. It's because there's no where left to hone their talents. It used to be the music halls and theatres and then it became the working mens clubs and piers at seaside resorts which is where Tommy and Bobby learnt their craft. Great comedy needs great timing and they had it, particular Bobby. One look, one pause just at the right time makes all the difference. My Dad and me didn't have much in common but comedy is the one thing we shared and we use to sit with tears running down our eyes at these two. I was a big fan of the Young Ones growing up and was chuffed to see Rik Mayall doing a sketch with them. He said he loved it and really enjoyed working with them both. When Bobby passed it wasn't just another comic leaving us it was the end of a double act era...for a while at least...Rock on Bobby lad and Tommy stay strong !

Saw them back in the 80s,at a club,they weren't trying to be Morecambe &Wise, but they were certainly alongside them,maybe as one the writers was Sid Green,who also wrote Eric and Ern...I had the pleasure of working on their show at my local theatre,(as lighting operator),when they were on tour,in a play written by Bobby Ball..laughed so much nearly missed my cues...they will be returning to my local theatre next year with "An Audience with" style of show, hoping I get the chance to push a few faders for them again..
