Congratulations on an entertaining and informative look at all things pickleball in 2024. Extra props to Lewis for 4.0 Gold! My thoughts on shoe reviews mirror Justin 's thoughts on handles. Shoes and a paddle are the two essential items required to play and like the handle being the contact point between you and your equipment, the same is true with shoes. Might be even more important, because some shoes can cause or exacerbate foot issues. If you can't move you can't play well. Also it's an area you have expertise and passion. Kind of like paddles. Maybe it could be a separate show. Hear you are looking for another channel. This time Justin can be the host and Lewis the co-host. Enjoy all you put out. Good luck on your goals for 2025.

The USAP PBCOR test only measures power (a forceful serve); not pop. To measure pop (a punch volley) the ball would have to be fired at a stationary paddle at around 30 mph. The current PBCOR test fires the ball at a stationary paddle at 60 mph.

How’s those NEONIC paddles compared to Monarch? I found monarch too poppy. It had some nice power for a wide body at baseline but too poppy at kitchen for me. Fiberglass to close to top layer for my liking as for me better when I have to access it, not muted enough in the monarch as never controlled that paddle well. NEONIC both the flare and the new flow seem interesting based on y’all’s comments
@PickleballPursuit17 сағат бұрын
The flare prime x is significantly more poppy and powerful than the monarch all court in my testing. I’m sure most would agree. The regular flare and flow swift are probably a little less poppy than the MAC

Based on Justin's PBcor comments I would think it would be possible for a paddle company to technically make a paddle that passed the PBcor test (which is basically pop) but when hitting an actual drive, when you have the force of a swing meeting the ball coming from the opposite direction could still crush the ball.. Kind of like Justin said about the ripple..

"Adding weight to the edge guard of a paddle affects its Paddle/Ball Coefficient of Restitution (PBCoR). Since paddles are only approved by the USA Pickleball (USAP) in their stock form, will lead weights be banned in 2025 as an untested modification?"
@johnclikeman50413 күн бұрын
I don't know whether this is true, but it doesn't follow from anything that Justin said. He said that adding weight increases the power of the paddle, not the PBCoR. Those are not the same thing. PBCoR is a measure only of how much energy the face of a paddle returns to the ball during a collision. Actual power (meaning, how fast can you make the ball go during a game) is certainly affected by the CoR of the paddle, but it's also affected by other things like the weight of the paddle and how fast it's moving. Saying you can get more power by adding weight to the paddle is true, in the same way that it is true that you can get more power by swinging harder. It's still dependent on the ability of the athlete to do the thing.
@wmalinak3 күн бұрын
I have wondered why weighting is legal (for change in inertia). And (less important) does tape on every "max dimension" paddle violate Rule 2.E.5 ? \ However, I can't think of anything regarding the handle customizations (other than lengthening).

Justin … I see your point about paddles breaking bad (illegal), but I also don’t like paddles breaking legally (losing spin). Let’s say hypothetically 😉 my Pulse S at two months, 50+ hours broke in a little but still short of illegal. Let’s say also it collects very little ball dust, and I really don’t miss the Prism Flash and Apollo required wet microfiber baths after every session. Also … no apparent surface or spin change at this point. For me, the dwell spin generated from “some” 3 gen breaking is a better “breaking” than legal grit breaking. Maybe there is a nerdtown dwell spin vs grit spin. I do agree with something I heard Will say in one of his videos. Drive spin is different than kitchen spin. At the baseline on a full drive I love me some Pulse S dwell spin. But a kitchen speedup below the net … dwell ain’t going to be your friend … give me a stiff gritty light Apollo. I think “dwell” will require a definition. To me “dwell” requires paddle core deflection, not simply layers on top of polypropylene. Right now, the manufacturers have been handcuffed by the USAP “no trampoline” bs. They are stuck trying to put perfume on a turd (polypropylene). They floated that turd in edge foam … and the sad thing is it helped. 😜

In Nerd town, did you ever cover cleaning a paddle face? I’m not sure if cleaning helps any. It could be argued it just wears out the grit quicker. I think the theory is ball first collects and fills up the grit with ball media but I don’t think that is true. I’ve cleaned my paddles and fever felt a difference in grit performance
@65atBestPB3 күн бұрын
I have wondered the same thing … is wiffle debris better for spin than the original peel ply? 🤣 It’s illegal to add texture to your paddle surface, but no rule requiring you to clean your filthy paddle. New product idea … paddle cover with sticky inside. 😛

currently im palying at level 4.0. however, i am using cheap paddle with no surface grip. should i continue be using it? my thought process is that i able to train to hit better sweet spot, but definitely disadvantage to play strong drive as i got no paddle surface to counter spin it. and cant serve hard cause will go undernet. should i progress with the paddle i have now? will it affect my muscle memory and play style long term
@PickleballPursuit2 күн бұрын
I think you would definitely benefit from playing with a more modern paddle. However you may get one and hate the feel of it since it’s so different than the one you’ve been playing with for a while. It may be worth trying to buy one of these $45 thermoformed paddles. Justin actually bought one when they were $29 out of curiosity and sure enough it was thermoformed and a perfectly fine paddle. You can try it out for a few days and if you hate it just return it. If you love it beat it until you break it and move on to some better options. Elongated $45: amzn.to/4h0HFxS Standard shape $35 amzn.to/40jYcrc

Nerd Town Topic(s): (1) no one discusses importance of paddle speed and that in kinetic energy (1/2mvsquared) calculations, the velocity has an exponential effect, so paddle speed is important (more than plow through). Doubling the paddle velocity means 4 times the KE. In other sports club head speed, bat speed, etc. are important metrics - we should talk paddle speed. (which is affected by weight, balance, AND aerodynamic qualities).
@johnclikeman50413 күн бұрын
We basically do talk about this, just not explicitly. It's why power and pop are separate metrics. Power is force imparted on the ball when the paddle is swung at maximum speed (which is relative to the specific person swinging the paddle), and pop is force imparted on the ball when swung at a lower speed (which is limited by how much that specific person can accelerate the paddle in a short amount of time, which depends on the person, and the swing weight, and the aerodynamics to the extent that they matter). What speed the paddle actually is moving at might be interesting, but I would think it's useful mostly to compare people, not paddles.
@JasonDeats3 күн бұрын
Sure. Maybe engineers/physicists use different terms and stuff (e.g., moment of inertia instead of "swing weight", KE, power, whatever). Regardless, aero qualities deserve to be discussions. Love swinging the Luxxe through the air but it's a couch cushion at impact. Regarding metrics, might be useful to discuss smash factor, which would be "power" I guess, ball speed divided by paddle speed. But just paddle speed is important. (using the same force to swing). Or measuring drag coefficient. Or just paddle speed by itself during one guy's hits. Further, I think some shapes twist in hand while swinging hard, and could cause problems. I guess people just like to hear the same old metrics. If somebody would do the math a perfect shape could be derived though.

Do you think that it would be good for the game if USA-P and UPA-A would work together to form a new organization and get rid of the whole riff between them. The sooner we get to a single cohesive Players and Paddle Ruleset the sooner that the sport can gain a standard play-ability world wide....that is probably one reason that it has not been approved at the Olympic level.

To get used to smaller sweet spots.
