My friends and I didn't have a problem with this game in the 80s. We didn't have a manual because we rented it at a video store. We never did figure out the intimidation though. Everything else was easy.

I remember playing it on my commodore 64 and the graphics, coloring, and animations were much better (I even looked up some videos of that version being played just to make sure I was remembering it correctly and I was). The controls were simple to use too. I had a lot of fun times playing the C64 version when I was a little. I wonder how they managed to screw up a perfectly good game two years after the original and releasing it on a newer system.

If you want a 2 player game that uses the NES controller well, play Double Dragon II. that game is freaking awesome. Still waiting on the grumps to play it... one of the best co-op games on the NES.

The NES has a grand total of 2 action buttons and Caveman Games is known as an easily-beat (almost boringly so) party game. Watching two people who play games for a living doing so poorly at it is rather disturbing.

NES ports from Data East are some of the worst. Without instruction manual you pretty much don't know what to do, and it isn't that easy to learn the first time. When it isn't button mashing or d-pad mashing, it's a counter-intuitive mess that doesn't follow any NES standards.

CaitSeith I would agree if it weren't THIS game. People who mention the practice mode are right about skipping it being silly, and the game's controls were simple enough that even my kid sister -- not the most intuitive when it comes to game controls -- managed to figure it out. Pole vault is basically the same as any Olympics-style game of the era, the clubbing mini-game is similar to period wrestlers, and the running game is just World Class Track Meet with dino hurdles. Perhaps I'm coming at this from the wrong perspective. Not only am I older than either PBJ or Jeff, but I grew up with yard sale games consoles primarily, meaning that instruction manuals were never a given, they were a luxury. Because of this, I developed a decent knack for sorting out a game's controls by comparing responses to similar responses from known games. Given that PBJ and Jeff are both of a generation that grew up more during a time when tutorials were the rule rather than the exception, perhaps I'm expecting a skill set from them they've never had to develop. Thinking about that, I'd love to see them sit down with an Atari 2600 copy of Summer Games and try to figure out the hackie sack mini-game. THAT would be hilarious.

Guerilla Grue Plays That's a good point. PBG was born in the SNES era, and the Olympic games come from an older time, when controls were explained only in instruction manuals. So learning such controls required lots of trial and error (God knows how long it took me to figure out the Dino Vault).

I actually enjoy this game and still pop it in from time to time. Each game has a unique technique and as far as the "mash the buttons as fast as you can games" this one has some of the better flavor and settings.

Oh, the NES ports of Data East games sucked. Their controls didn't follow the console standards, and they were either button mashing, d-pad mashing or a counter-intuitive mess. That game was way better in the C-64 (for starters, it had sound effects), but still deciphering the controls without the instruction manual was a pain in the ass. Bottom line: *Glory to C-64 Master Race!* ;)

My whole family used to play this game together, even my mother. We always had a lot of fun, but now that I think about it we were awful at the games as well. Still, lots of nostalgia! Let me tell you a turbo-button controller makes the game a ton easier. ;)

STORY TIME! So my dad's friend has a cabin up north with a NES and a Sega Genesis and a bunch of random games. This was among them. My dad tried playing it for some reason and it was just... He was playing it by himself. He couldn't figure out how to get the dinosaur to walk, so he had to wack it on the head over and over again so it did baby hops forward. He tried to make a fire while the computer made it's within seconds, and started stabbing his character, and my dad would say "he's making a fucking steak over there while I'm not even getting smoke!" AND THEN THE WIFE TOSS. I DON'T EVEN NEED TO SAY WHAT OUR REACTIONS WERE TO THE FUCKING WIFE TOSS! This game actually brings great memories for me, all because of my dad's random play through! XD

This GAME is accual for the Commodor 64 and was portet TO the NES.... so it´s not unusual to hear a LOT "i don´t know wat to do" or "I don´t get This" and "This is wierd" its accual one of the first gen consolports. I´ve played the C64 when i was like.... 5 or 6. It is realy hard to control and like Mariokart... U need practice... ofcource they say "It´s a bad game" but compared with other games that came out "around" that time... this one was accualy realy good. (like Jeff said).... well just wanted to leave this here. Have Fun.
