I prefer that TurboGrafX episode a lot more than any of the NES/GameBoy installements. The difficulty is more manageable in my opinion, due to the addition of checkpoints, and the fruits being more abundant, making the progression less dreadful. However, I kinda miss those cute dinosaur buddies...

Thanks for posting this! I love this game! The graphics and sound are great! The game play is simple, but in an attractive, comfortable, and familiar way, and the game is fairly short, but difficult enough to not feel that way. When we got our Wii at tax time 2008, this was one of the very first games I got on the Virtual console (I do have an actual TG16 - US Turbo Duo, but I've never played this on the real hardware). Also, while this game doesn't have a save feature, all virtual console games do by default by virtue of the Wii holding your spot whenever you exit without resetting. So, while this game is not really long, it's one that took me about six years to beat (just beat it about a month or so ago) because I'd play it for a couple hours, die a million times, get a level or a few ahead, and then put it down for several months and sometimes for even a year or more without playing it, only to pick it up again on a whim and repeat the pattern. So it probably goes without saying that when I finally beat the game, it was a really rewarding feeling! :-) Anyway, thanks again for posting!

It's weird to think though that this could've been the thing I'd have been playing in late 92, early 93 if my parents had stuck to their original plan. My brother and I very rarely snooped for Christmas presents (party because my parents were almost never both out of the house at the same time). Well, one day a few weeks before Christmas 92, they were for some reason, and so we snooped...and found a brand new Turbografx16! They pulled a fast one on us, though, and switched it for a new SNES sometime between then and Christmas morning! In the early days of the SNES, most of the games we rented first were SNES installments of franchises we knew and loved on the NES, such as Contra, Castlevania, Double Dragon, and the like. Well, had we got the TG16 instead, I'm sure we would've done the same thing with the few TG16 installments of NES franchises. And of course, this may well be the most high profile of them all. So, we got the SNES brand new on Christmas 92. In Sept 93, we got a used Genesis, so it wouldn't be long before we had a second 16-bit system. Genesis would eventually become my favorite 16-bit system, and favorite system of all time, but that wouldn't be til 2003 - a full ten years later. I did eventually get a TG16, used in early December 2000. In Spring 2003, I got my Duo, and so in 2009, I gave the original TG16 to a friend because I didn't need it anymore. In the past year or so, my understanding of TG16 hardware, particularly, as well as software to a lesser degree has radically increased, and with it, my love and appreciation for the TG16, so much so that it either has, or is about to eclipse SNES in terms of my simple subjective preferences. I could see it someday even challenging the Genesis for the gold, but at present, it does not. However, while I prefer the Genesis, I'm more intrigued and excited by the TG16 because I still have more to explore with it. Also, I view the three systems hardware wise as too close to call - an effective three-way tie, and since TG16 is the one that people give the least amount of credit to hardware wise, it is the one that I'm spending the most time defending, and "being an apologist" for, and that endears me to it more as well. Anyway, this game was 2008 for me on a platform that was 2000 for me. It's weird to think that it was very nearly 1993 for me on a system that was 1992. I wonder how things would've turned out had it been.

This is my favorite Adventure Island I have. I have 1 and 2 on NES and 3 and 4 on Famicom and Super NES and Super Famicom versions as well. Great series. And yes, they have 4 only on Famicom and it kinda sucks.

I still prefer this over Super Adv Island 1 and 2 on SNES but I prefer the original Wonder Boy games over the rest! Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy in Monster World and, probably the best, Monster World IV.

I'm pretty sure that through all four Adventure Island games it's the same girl, the storyline just messed up her name (or couldn't decide). I guess in the 16-bit era, the girl decided to change her hair color (or at least, the NES era had to have her hair dark due to pallete limits).

This is very polished though it's not surprising since it's quite a late release, almost 5 years after the system launch, but still, graphics are nice and detailed, the music sounds particularly good and they pulled off some nice parallax given the PC Engine limitations in this regard. A shame about the revamped main character though, the original Wonder Boy looks nicer.

the lack of colors in the NES is what gave adventure island it's charm, the music too. PC Engine, SNES, etc. it's not the same.
