4:17 Sewing machine oil works great for this. I kept a GPU fan alive for about 2 years with it. Sometimes you need to drill a small hole under the sticker, but its worth it if the fan is noisy and hasn't frozen.

So regarding sleeve bearing reliability, I just replaced a pair of Sunon sleeve bearing fans that were powered on 24/7 365 since 1998. The amplifier was decommissioned in early 2015, and I've been using it intermittently since. In other words, about 149,000 power on hours.

I've been looking for one of these videos linus! Thanks! However, "point contact" does not 'reduce friction'. Friction is determined by the weight of one object on another and doesn't matter wether that weight is spread over 1 cm^2 or 5 cm^2. The "point contact" will put more stress on said "point" because it has to deliver the total friction over a smaller area. You can think of this like sliding across a slip-n-slide. First, slide on your chest/stomach. Fun, right? Now try sliding with your elbow/forearm holding up your upper body. In both cases you will slide just as far (as long as you didn't go to McD's in between runs), but your elbow will probably hurt a lot more than your chest after you stop sliding. This is because the total friction force has to act on a smaller area and this is what is happening inside the ball-bearing.

Could you make a video about positive vs. negative pressure in PCs? I'm curious about your opinion and what are the pros/cons of both options.
@Ammi6543
@Ammi6543 10 жыл бұрын
As far as I can see negative pressure has no pros. With positive, you get less dust intake through unfiltered openings, you reduce the chance of exhausted air being sucked back in and the air density is higher (although very minimally) which in theory will increase its thermal capacity.
@CombuskenKid
@CombuskenKid 10 жыл бұрын
Well if you have water cooling. Then you want you CPU fan in a pull setup which usually involves having your fan blowing out anyway.

***** I've just noticed linus usually uses negative pressure on his builds (2 front intakes, 3 exhaust fans on the top and back). This setup seems to be the most popular from what I've seen. I'm curious what the reason is for this choice.

I would argue that sleeve bearings in graphics card coolers are actually a reason for a PSA. If mounted horizontally the lifespan is reduced drastically and also they are known to produce rattling noises on higher RPMs which also often occurs on graphics cards. Also you can't just switch out a GPU cooler that easy anymore these days since most models are non reference and therefore it's not as easy to find a proper 3rd party cooler and even if you do - those are most likely much more expensive and bulkier than they used to be due to the higher temps they have to disperse. So if you have a GPU with a sleeve bearing which starts to rattle you're pretty much boned - and Sleeve bearings in GPUs are still quite common, so that sucks.

@tmar23
@tmar23 10 жыл бұрын
Actually horizontal mounting doesn't "drastically" reduce their lifespan. Vertical mounting because of gravity causes wear mostly on most contacted point (the lowest point) of the very soft brass. Horizontally with the natural magnetic centering of motors limits shaft bearing contact (in a perfectly balanced world). Rattling is common with sleeve bearings because you can't have as tight tolerances as say ball bearings.

CUSTOM WATERCOOLING LOOP MASTER RACE! Us friends at /r/watercooling would like a word ;) It really does solve all those legitimate problems you brought up. But damn if it isn't expensive. Haha in all seriousness, you can grab something like an H60 and a G10 bracket from NZXT for around $100 and have yourself and awesome performing GPU that is capable of some serious overclocking, as well as being much quieter and cooler. Hence the increased overclocking capability. Those aftermarket air coolers are kind of a joke when you can go the CLC and G10 route in my opinion. It makes a lot more sense.
@CaptainShiny5000
@CaptainShiny5000 10 жыл бұрын
NINJ4ST34K987 100$ is still very expensive. I mean in the old days up the Geforce 9000 series I'd say, you could just grab some aftermarket cooler for 30$ and that performed always better than with the thing which was build on it. This makes it a pretty big deal these days if a GPU cooler craps out.

Linus, I've been wondering about Phanteks' fans, they say they use a UFB (Updraft Floating Bearing/Balance) and the only thing I can find on that is FrostyTech saying its basically a sleeve bearing in disguise but without any details to back up that statement. What are UFB really?

I have two old Enermax fans which have a different design than outlined here. They don't use a bearing at all but just use the magnetic force. Not a good explanation, but either way this design makes it possible to remove the fan blade for cleaning and to just put it back. Haven't seen it on other fans, care to shed some light on this?
