if game uses only 2 cores out of lets say 8, you have 100% usage on 2 cores and close to 0 on 6 so 25% cpu usage. if you set overlay to show each core individually you will see that.

There isn't anything "wrong" with the cpu. This entirely is a problem that lies within the games coding itself. Of course its partially going to rely around the fact they use an outdated engine, aswell as no DX12 to better RAM Performance. But mostly, it matters whether the game is coded sequentially or concurrently. Sequentially built coding flies better on something with good single thread performance. Clearly not a CPU Bottleneck as it isn't being fully utilized, and clearly isn't even having trouble sending packet data to the graphics card. Clearly its just a very poorly optimized game.

I tried running this game on my 2080ti and got some interesting results. The comment about Ubersampling cutting the framerate in half seems pretty accurate. At 4K Ultra Preset I got about 90 - 95 fps with Ubersampling disabled. Enabling Ubersampling dropped my framerate to 40 - 45 fps. Also at 4K there wasn't a huge difference in image quality between the two as far as I could tell, anyway.

@@DunhaCC I agree, look at the GPU usage when the ubersampling is enabled. Never once did the GPU use climb up to near 100% use. This is some kind of implementation error of what the developer was trying to accomplish. True enough, the single threaded performance may be slightly held back by Ryzen, but even if you tossed a super high frequency OC'ed Intel part at it, I doubt the framerates would be dramatically improved.

When i was playing The witcher 2 at max settings with ubersampling on with my i5 6600k at 4.4ghz and a gtx 1080 my framerate was a little better than yours. I think it is also really cpu bound and likes higher ipc and clockspeeds from looking at your gpu usage with ubersampling on. Still did not avarage 60 fps, maybe a 9900k can.

@@sjaakvanvliet838 Agreed, my 1070ti paired with a i7 7700 performs better as well, and the gpu utilization numbers on his video implies that the vega 64 has more to give if it weren't cpu bottlenecked. Perhaps Ryzen has issues with older dx9 games that rely on a few cores and high ipc.

Quick question; did you manually allow the game to use more VRAM? The ultra preset is capped at 1000MB VRAM (iirc) in the config file. If you open it manually in notepad, you'll find a line named "TextureMemoryBudget", where you can manually set more allowed VRAM for the game. I run this game with a GTX 980, all settings maxed and UberSampling on and still hit anywhere between 70-120 FPS depending on the area.

I'm playing through the Witcher 2 for the first time and after watching this I was curious about what my settings were. I'm only about 2 hours into the game, but I haven't had any performance based issues, so I thought I'd try and see what the game would be like with this setting on, only to find out it's been on the whole time! I have a 21:9 ultrawide monitor and I was surprised to find that the Witcher 2 does not support Ultrawide out of the box. Therefore I am using WideScreenFixer to run it in Ultrawide. I was saving to build a new PC a few months before this game came out. Had an i5 760 quad core, 8gb ddr2, and a geforce 560 ti. Ran great maxed at 1600x900 with no uber sampling. Mind blowing graphics at the time and still looks great. I thought the game was perfect on release day with no issues. Now the first Witcher that was a whole different story. 😉

This game needs a "Remastered" Edition that's got a few extra upgrades to eye candy visuals, support for the Vulkan API, Improved Sound Engine to bring atmospheric sound to people with a Stereo Headset/Stereo Studio Monitors (Headset) & maybe a few upgrades to some of the animations. I reckon that with a newer API like Vulkan, Uber-Sampling would not have as large of a performance impact hopefully a few % increase in performance. But more so that other visual settings could utilise hardware more efficiently and produce better results with less available resources.

Digital Foundry released a video today about the same thing. You guys should check it out. Now on to the subject at hand: I just ran The Witcher 2 with everything on (except Motion Blur) and Ubersampling enabled at 1080p. I am getting between 62 and 75 FPS depending on the area I'm in and what's happening on screen with an old configuration: i7 4790k, 16 GB of DDR 3 and a 1070Ti under Windows 7 64 bits. The GPU is fully utilized 98-100% and the CPU cores are at around 75%. I have no idea why you're having issues.

The story was far superior and the characters all had true motives. Geralt already knows all the characters in the Witcher 3, making it harder to bond with them.

I don't have my gaming rig at college but my Macbook Pro 2019 runs this in the 40s at max settings (besides supersampling, anti aliasing, and motion blur) with a cooling pad. Seems like it's CPU intensive. I turn it down because it doesn't reach 60 though.

Hmm. Digital Foundry says that ubersampling is basically 4x supersampling. So if you are running at 1080p with it on it's actually running at 4K. But when you tried AMD's downampling option which should basically be the same thing it ran better. I wonder why that is. Perhaps, the ubersampling option also scales the resolution of some individual effects in addition to the rendering resolution?

So glad you made this video m8. I recently finished Witcher 1 EE and was pretty hyped to play Witcher 2 EE and there I was maxing all the possible setting on. On the first scene I recived 10-30FPS hahaha just to let u know I have RX 5700 so the directx 12 vs directx 9 kills my pc xD hopefully Witcher 3 will be a plesent experience xD In my case I still have my old fella HD7750 :D

I'm the same! The series are tempting me to jump right back into the game series, but I don't want to play 3 again, even though it was one of the best gaming experiences I've had. Its just that I've put nearly 300 hours into it, did everything I could do, and I don't want to start over!

:sigh: Both you and Digital Foundry just did a video on Witcher 2 and on both video it's failed to mention that Adrenalin 2020 drivers completely destroy performance on AMD RDNA GPUs at the moment.

You can see the Vega 64 (while UberSampling was enabled) isn't at 100%, though. This means there has to be another limit, not just GPU performance, very likely caused by a lack of optimization (of UberSampling itself). When you showed us the footage with VSR enabled, the GPU was at 100%. What this basically means is UberSampling can't even make use of the GPU's performance, which in return obviously leads to poor results.

Installed Witcher 2 on my A10 7860 AMD Processor with RX 560 for the GPU. Installed Witcher 3 months later to see the difference. Guess which game ran smoother? (Sorry for the specs. I'm just poor to upgrade)

My build when I bought Witcher 2 was an i5 2500k with an HD 6450 , Upgraded to a 7770 HD and still couldn't run it. I probably had UberSampling on but since I didn't have much faith in my system I ended up going back to League Of Legends and WC3. I put $800 into that i5 2500k build and now a days that can build you a 1080p killer as well as 1440p gaming but people want to complain about the prices of enthusiast gpus..
