Agreed & they know how to do a video....with all it takes-the only problem may be the succession of smoky & unsmoky whiskies, and of course this needs a lot of time, and eating as well between say 8 whiskies in 3 different sequences (esp. for beginners)...but in fine there's always something to learn with blind tasting, for beginners as well as for connoisseurs (& believe me I often struggled to recognize some whiskies)

Thanks Roy. It actually took about six weeks total. I thought it is a one off chance to record first impressions so make the effort. I ended up with 10+ hours of footage to wade through.

@@GregsWhiskyGuide Good points. We first tested random pairs and gave a basic score to each. We then split them into smokey/non smokey and retested in groups of similar initial score. We then reorganized for a third and final pass based on the second scores and compared four lowest first allowing the better two to 'qualify' for the next round. But yes hard to compare a heavy peat against a lighter whisky. But fun trying.

@@WhiskyMystery Usually, but not always. It just means it has had more time to interact with the barrel(s) and depending on what the barrels were and where they are located and how they were treated and even what ABV the new make spirit was when putting in the barrel, more or less of certain flavors develop over time. Something aged for 3 years in Texas could be much more robust in flavor than something much much older aged in Scotland simply due to heat fluctuations and climate. There are malts being made so many places nowadays, you just have to explore and start finding the flavor profiles you really enjoy and seek those out.

Cracking good effort Phil and Deepa. I'd love to take part in a blind tasting but I'm far too disorganised to arrange it myself. Kudos for the water epilogue too. Another variable is leaving it in a glass for 20 minutes before drinking - something else I'm hopeless at. The final variable is the change that occurs as the bottle fill goes down. It's a sad fact of life that it hits its peak once the end is in sight. (Peated whisky can go a bit flat towards the end however.) Hope to see more of you. WT

Epic and fascinating. The manner in which you present this is compelling indeed. Love the blind rating system, but it all comes down to individual taste, right? What is the best whisky? The whisky you like the way you like to drink it (Whisky Tribe). Love the analysis at the end, caveats as previously stated implied. Kudos for pulling this off, and I really respect your epilogue. This is a great video. I'd love for you to revisit this line-up again with the new knowledge you've acquired in the past year. Two things seemed to skew things pretty dramatically: first, comparing cask-strength whiskies to 40% ABV ones blind without considering that or adding sufficient water; and second, the order of tasting, since your tongues must have been crushed by some of those high alcohol ones! I'm doing a bracket style, single elimination "play-off" tournament with a fellow Scotch-lover... kind of like the World Cup without the group stages... so that's another idea for a format.
@WhiskyMystery4 жыл бұрын
Hi Brendan. We have thought the same thing about revisiting and many of them are still in blind tasting bottles and will reappear like Glendronach 12. We absolutely got mislead by ABV back then. Even now it is a heavy bias. The order though was not an issue as we tasted these 24 in all kinds of cross comparisons over three weeks before getting to the final order.

This is an excellent video. It does highlights that pricey does not means better. But the most surprising thing about this video is how much the price of whisky has changed in two years. In Northern Virginia the price for GlenLivet 18 (today) is around $140, in this video it was around $85... the same goes for many others. Can I go back in time for 2018 prices? Thank you.

Lol. Great intro... I’d be curious after you’ve finished all the bottles which ones you finish first/ miss the most. Do your rankings stay the same? For me personally the Aberlour abundah is one of my absolute favorites, but there are many on this list I haven’t tried.
@WhiskyMystery5 жыл бұрын
We have come back to the abunah a lot and it is now empty. There were a few days we really liked it but the bottom of the bottle seemed quite flat and sour. So still not so ire about it. You can see from our other videos that we have expanded our testing.
@TobyField6 жыл бұрын
Great video. How did you settle on the choice of brands and the number of bottles?
@ivanthetolerable2 жыл бұрын
Seeing those prices now is a bit disconcerting. I noticed that they changed from purchase to editing. Did you half-fill the newer series of bottles for blind tasting? Have you considered that there might’ve been some oxidation for the late selections?
@WhiskyMystery2 жыл бұрын
10% tax on top in CA. Not all have gone up too much but some. I filled the 250ml blind bottles to 200ml level. No sign of oxidation years later
@ivanthetolerable2 жыл бұрын
@@WhiskyMystery Not that oxidation is always a bad thing. I’ve oxidized Malts to ease back a sour note, a bitter note, a sulphur note, or in the case of certain Jamaican rum’s and a single pot-distilled bourbon, way too much esters. I took Ralfy’s old chestnut “A minute in the glass for every year in the cask.” as more than a guide to older malts, but also a way to attempt to adjust them. For example, sulphury Deanston 20, that you couldn’t recognize recently. I confirmed that mine too had lost almost all of it, after around 2 years @ ⅔︎ full. Disappointing both with and without.
@WhiskyMystery2 жыл бұрын
@@ivanthetolerable haha on the deanston story. Fully agree. I love teh Springbank Local Barley 9 year but is pretty harsh when fresh. Much better to pour half the bottle into a spare and wait a few months.

About 2 weeks then a lot of editing. But fun. Hope you see more of our videos. I guess you saw Ralfy review and whisky of the year?

I'm late here - but the Talisker does have a vintage and not an NAS as you put on the label. Could you check if it was the 2008/2018 or was it the year earlier. There has been some variation noted in the various bottlings. Cheers

@@WhiskyMystery All good - I just picked up a bottle of the Talisker 2008/2018 version of the Distiller's Edition and the dates sort of work in with you buying them at Costco at the end of 2018. Really appreciate this type of video - I know how much work is involved - but it has a similar feel to my whisky journey and I feel I'm similar to where your palates are now (I thought Highland Park 12 was enough until the whisky bug bit). It's a bit annoying I can't tune in to your live mystery feeds - wrong time zone, badly!! But I do catch up on the shortened versions - I feel that Phil and I have a very similar set of likes so I take on board when he's happy about a whisky and put it on the list. Keep up the great work - AND - keep covid safe there in the crazy USofA. Cheers
