Bought my FIRST bottle of scotch yesterday... Laphroaig 10. The owner of the liquor store thought I was nuts. But the reaction video (that you referenced here) peaked my interest. SMOKE. Smoked fish. Iodine. Brine. More smoke. Twenty minutes later, still taste salty. I love it. Can't wait to try Lagavulin.

Nothing wrong with that. The thing about whisky is that price doesn’t necessarily equal quality. Price is more correlated to a bottles rarity, than its age or how it tastes. I’m more of a Bourbon man myself. I’ve had pretty much every available Bourbon there is and I always come back to Wild Turkey 101. I LOVE Wild Turkey 101. I’d take it over any other bourbon and it’s only $20 a bottle.

Fun fact: Lagavulin was the second whiskey, and second hard liquor I ever tasted. First was some super cheap blended scotch. When I tasted that cheap scotch, I was like ”Wait a minute, I think I might like it, but I need the real deal”. Went an bought an entire bottle of Lagavulin, had my first sip, and, I swear, the Hallelujah choir from Handel’s Messiah started singing. My first ever tasting note for Lagavulin: ”Tastes like the fireplace at Christmas” 😍

Just recently joined the whiskey journey as I become the part of the company which makes it for the world consumer. I found out about this channel just because I was willing to understand more about the company I joined and what is what.. and the channel helped me a lot on these details to figure out things how it is made and many many other details of whiskey world. Ultimately I am becoming more and more familiar with the different tastes of the whiskey. So far I have started with only one choice for being at my home "Bulleit" Bourbon 10 year as it has all that nice sweet vanila candy flavours with these mild hints of the other flavours in it. I think I would be enjoying the Rye more, but I have a lot of time for it. I am trying to get into smokier ones as I have tried "Caol Ila" and it is something I like to enjoy, but not every day as it leaves so much after taste for the whole day and reminds me of old basement of my Grandfather (which is nice to remember but not for the whole day) :D. so less harsh tastes would come from the ones like "Talisker," "Lagavulin" which I find.. one of them has that sweet spot of being just the right amount of the smokines in it that doesnt stay with me for the whole day. I really enjoy the channel and keep up your great enjoyments You Magnificients!!!

Ok, the journey into whisk[e]y was an inauspicious one to say the least. With Southern Comfort in college, it quickly moved to Jack. Four years later, I happened to pick up a bottle of The 101 and fell in love. Little did I know it is the go to for so many whiskey lovers. It was my go to for over 15 years until I found The Tribe and started to explore. Now the world of whiskey is finally opening up. Thank you fellow MBs for all your insight and passion for such a historical spirit!

Vanilla is a common note because wood used for barrels contains a chemical called Vanillin, which tastes like vanilla. And why Imitation Vanilla Extract is so cheap: it’s made from wood

While vanillin may be in wood, OPS got his facts wrong about vanilla extract. Per the FDA it has to be made using vanilla beans. Vanilla is easy and cheap to grow, there's no reason to use wood. It would be a costlier manufacturing process to use wood. Wood.....sheesh. The crap you see on the interwebz.

@Paul Pledge Some people. How many beavers would you need for providing all that imitation vanilla? They'd be on the endangered species list. And if not, where is the beaver anal milking farms? Where's the protest for free range beavers? I've heard this source of imitation flavors for Gatorade zero, and a few others. I just don't know........
@Charlesb88
@Charlesb88 3 жыл бұрын
moncorp1 Inc um, I don’t know where you get your facts from but I’m pretty sure as longs as it’s stated it’s artificial vanillin rather then from vanilla beans, it can be used in foods per the FDA. Most vanillin these days come from alternate sources rather then from vanilla beans as demand outstrips vanilla Bean production. Most imitation vanillin is made from refining petrochemicals. Typically, two chemicals are combined to create vanillylmandelic acid, which, when it reacts to oxygen, produces synthetic vanillin, the main ingredient in imitation vanilla.15% of sythetic vanillin comes lignosulfonates, a byproduct from the manufacture of cellulose via the sulfite process with the sole producer of wood-based vanillin currently being the company Borregaard located in Sarpsborg, Norway. Now I don’t know how easy vanilla is to grow these days but apparently its not being grown in quantity to keep up with demand as many food products the days use the immitrton vanillin vs real vanilla bean extract. As I have noticed, at the store the “pure vanilla extract” typically costs more then imitation vanilla extract. At one time, they did indeed use imitation vanillin in food made from castoreum, a substance admitted from a gland near the beaver’s butt but that was eventually deemed to complicated and expensive so it’s no longer used when making the stuff for for food these days (FDA says it’s safe to consume though). It is however still used in some perfumes and such.

Hi guys, I really love the channel and have been following for more than 2 years. I’ve become sort of the “whisky guy” in my family and work, people usually ask me for my opinion on whisky to try or to give as a present. As for the whisky I like to drink, I consider myself a Speyside drinker, but currently I have been enjoying a lot of good Bourbons, specially Four Roses and Jefferson’s. As I am from Brazil, we don’t have many options to buy and have to rely on somebody bringing when the travel to the US. Once again, congrats on the channel.

I’ve been loving Island scotch. It’s very balanced with its smoke but the brine and herbal notes over the sweetness add so much nuance and layering that makes it pair well with so much. I think Talisker 10 is what I find to be the perfect representation of the category.

As a whisky drinker, I used to mainly stick to Irish because it's super friendly and has a lot of sweeter, nicer notes, but not too long ago I used speyside as an introduction into Scotch, specifically Balvenie. At a local liquor store I'm fond of, they had a sampler pack of Balvenie on sale for $40 and it got me three 250ml of Balvenie, the classic 12 year double wood, the 18 year double wood and the 14 year Caribbean cask. I really fell in love with the subtlety of a specific molassesy note in the Caribbean cask and so that was my first full bottle of Scotch. After that I started exploring Scotch pretty heavily until I nut up and finally bought a bottle of Laphroaig after months of psyching myself out about Islays. I can firmly say that now I am an Islay drinker through in through. I'm glad I decided to buy that sampler because it helped me on my journey a lot.

me myself, I find the opposite. I usually prefer to start with the heavy, complex whiskys and finish with something light and sweet. by the time I'm at the end, I can't taste as deep or as thorough as when I start but as they always say on this channel: "the best whiskey is the whiskey you like to drink, and the best way to drink it is the way you like to drink it" I just find it interesting how different people have different experiences, and I think it's important to share our differences

Yeah, for those of us bludgeoned by Laphroaig 10 in our youth, peat can be an impediment. In my search for a 'lilting hint of peat' I'd found in a Highland Park retail travel special, I trialed Lag 16. It was still 'too peaty', but it will still get consumed. Instead, I finally found my way to the chalice of my taste, Benromach 15.

I started with Irish whiskey in college, and loved it immediately. My first taste was Bushmills, followed quickly by Jameson and Powers. I still love Irish, but my go-to has been Islay and other smoky whiskys from the Isles for years. I would definitely agree that Lagavulin is a great representation of the style, and an absolutely wonderful whisky, though I've been enjoying Port Charlotte 10 lately. I'm enjoying the underlying vanilla bean notes as well as the briney finish. My go to is Ledaig 10, which is from Mull, and very well balanced despite being on the peatier side. I filled my flask with it for a highland games this summer (as you do), and one friend's response after tasting was "there's a lot of dirt in that!" LOL. He had a rum cask MacAllan in his flask. I have a background in coffee tasting, and I've always found it interesting how our palates vary.

Glenmorangie Original is the one that got met into Whiskey, but Lagavulin 16 is the one that made me fall in love with it!

I thought I hated whiskey/scotch until I was offered a glass of 19 year aged Ardbeg. Instantly fell in love with the peaty scent and flavour, and have recommended/bought it for friends who also found it unique to what they've had before

I've been enjoying the whiskey lately. The High West Double Rye is amazing! I love Islay single malt but have turned to rye with the advent of the tariff.

I like that the nose is sweeter than the palate. The amount of spice is a pleasant surprise. I got the same sensation from Michter's Straight Rye and preferred the flavor a bit.

Right now I'm on a Texas craft whiskey kick...more specifically, a Balcones kick. Their product line is incredibly diverse, but it all has a particular house style. Though I like some of their products more than others, I've yet to taste one that I wouldn't happily drink.

I'm fairly new to whisky, (have only been drinking it for 2 months) but I've found Islay to be my favorite type. I started with Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10, then Laphroaig Select and Bruichladdich Port Charlotte. I recently acquired a bottle of Lagavulin 16, but unfortunately can't try it yet, as I promised a friend that we'd try it first together.

I’ve found, as a newbie, I like Scotch and Rye but not bourbon. Who knew? Just bought a 10 year old Laphroig. Holy mackerel. Not sure if I can do that. Had a 15 year old Macallan that I absolutely love. I’ve learned a lot from you.

For some reason my local liquor store has a bourbon with snowmelt from the rockies by the Breckenridge, CO Distillery. It is actually really great. Bourbon is my go to at the moment. So many great flavors.

Ayyyy idk if anyone will see this but I clicked over from another vid to get at those word clouds and found myself looking right at one. I’m not exactly experienced, so I was thrilled to see that I guessed correctly from the words in the cloud that it was the tribe cloud for rye.

I envy the person that can drink and love the taste of peated whiskey’s. My first jump in to scotch was JW Black then followed by Glenlivet 12, which I drank for years. I went and bought a scotch that was highly recommended to me by a friend which was Lagavulin 16... When I took my first sip I thought it was skunked or went bad for some reason!!! I’ve tried other peated scotches since like Ardbeg 10 and a Talisker and still can’t do it. So cheers to all the peated scotch lovers

I'm currently enjoying some Kentucky Striaghts. George Dickel 12 was the bottle I just picked up because well, I never tried it, and I was surprised. But as for my favorite, Red Breast 15. To me, its heaven in a glass.

Oh, yeah....I started with Glenfiddich 12 and then, when I sampled the Solera (15), I fell hard. For decades, each was my go-to, until I returned to the Orkneys and stumbled over Highland Park's lightly peated. Glenmorangie 10 is nice, light whiskey; I prefer the 14 after it's been through sherry casks. I haven't decided on a go-to bourbon, because I don't tend to drink it. After testing Balcones Baby Blue, my friends suggested I might like a local product, Freeland Bourbon. When I think 'classic rye', I think Canadian, despite having both Bulleit and Woodford Reserve ryes taking up space in my cabinet. I tend to be peat averse (and sherry dependent) and have used Laphroaig 10 to shock my guests. When I learned that peat tends to be the first flavor note to dissipate over time, I set on obtaining a Lagavulin 16. It didn't have what I wanted ('a soft lilting peatiness'), but at least I will revisit the bottle far more often than the largely ignored Laophroaig 10 (Lapsang Souchong tea...creosote). Loving Westlands Peated American Single Malt. Stranahan's Colorado Single Malt. And...I just opened a bottle of Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or. Wow. Is that different and good.

bourbon has been my kick for several years, and my pick would be the bourbon barrel strength. lots of super sweet flavors, it almost tastes like the root beer hard candies, and it's fairly easy to drink for me
