Excellent approach to the trail this year. Go into it thinking you’ll have to do some light mountaineering and you’ll be good. The snowpacks will be around long into the summer this year.

Yes it seems likely that some this winter '22-'23 snow may be around in the melt of '24!!

@@travelinbeat It’ll certainly be an interesting year to do the trail. Wish I was going. I’ll definitely be out and about on some of the sections or in the general area up north. I have a pair of the K-10 hiking crampons as well as the KTS version and they work very well for non-technical use. Now that it looks like most of the storms have passed we’ll be setting out to check out our favorite areas on skis and snowshoes. Good luck to you.

Beat, love your detailed gear list. You always think of every little thing. That is such a great idea to pack a starter pistol in with your gear! I never would’ve thought of that, but I think I will probably do that next year when I have to fly to the beginning of the trail too. looking READY!! nice trick for the pack on the plane. we stuffed ours in duffels it was not the best.. the "gun" to make sure they track it is awesome i love it... so i went up and saw the snow by Kirkwood a couple weeks ago, DEEP/ wow... and i wasnt even in the really deep stuff/// but it is warming up// hoping for the best... passed over the PCT monday thinking about all you hikers and check this out: we got lucky with our yosemite permit this year, we'll be in lyell canyon where the PCT enters yosemite for labor day weekend! .. I am back and forth to the desert often this time of year, hoping i can catch you at the PCT/ CA HWY 58 crossing. crazy winds last weekend it is finally warming up now

I really like the RIdge Merino Soltice Hoodie, the issue has been they sell out fast and are not always available, but there should be a spring run of them soon. Right now they only have one color available, fire red.

I have an Osprey 65, not light but robust. Bear canisters are like lugging a phone booth around, but they're good for bear and people alike. I found a shemagh is a great, lightweight addition. MSR snowshoes will get you through anything, the heel raise levers saves the achilles on steep ascents. The snow levels are crazy out here. Best of luck. Be safe.

Beat, noticed you didn't finish the P.C.T. with the x mid pro. What was the deal breaker for you?? I own a duplex , one of the originals and a H.M.G. ultimid 2 . I've been researching the the x mid pro for awhile and any input would be great. Great vedios !!!

Thabjs so much!! Yes after 1200mi or so I switched back to my Duplex. There were many things I found frustrating about the Durston and so I ditched it. Just posted a video that goes way into why, etc. Good catch, good question, hope this helps!

I don't think that the snowshoes will be needed, it's to late in the season for powder snow in the Sierra.

Yeah I'm very interested to see whether they'll be helpful. I had then in the San Juan's but reports from fellow hikers were that they wouldn't have helped so I sent them home and was happy to discover that I agreed with those reports.

Very true!! It does pack up smaller that it is laid out for this video, but you're right that at its height I required much more space so I carried the Osprey Aether 85L on this hike
