I just did this job. What a pain for such a simple part! I wish I would have seen your video first. I broke my valve cover trying to get the pcv valve out. Pulled a used valve cover from a salvage yard. After two hours of cutting and digging baked rubber out I found a great solution! I used a seal puller from harbor freight and a painters putty knife. (The kind with the crescent cutaway) On the side of the valve there is a hole. Stick the seal puller in and use the putty knife for leverage. Pops right out! Hope this helps somebody!

Thank you so much! I have the 3.3L, and its in the same place. using a bolt really helped. I am at just under 200k miles and it would not pull loose, I don't know if it had ever been changed. I ended up having clamp the bolt in with vise grips and use a pry bar with a block of wood on the intake to get it out. The rubber was as hard as plastic and half ended up ripping the rubber and pulling the PCV out. Left half the rubber in the valve cover had to pry it out with a screw driver. Put a smidge of oil on the new PCV and she went right in, no problems. Old one passed the rattle test but it was already out and I did not know how long it had been in. Probably me just imagining it but the enging seems to be running a hare smoother now. Thanks again.

yeah, mine felt like plastic, had to break the seal to get it out, it wouldn't budge. Glad I got it done though, don't know how I forgot about it, seems to run a little better, might just be me. Wife drives it every day, it if helped I'm sure she will notice.

I once had a next door neighbor who worked in an ER, as an EMT. He had a vacuum pump, called a Gomco. He said he bought it at a hospital auction. It was a portable pump with a collection reservoir on it. They use them when they are doing something they need a vucuum tube for, such as pumping someone’s stomach. That was a very handy device to have in a garage though.

You are welcome I'm glad it helped! I drive a 2015 now and this is a little tougher to get to with the 3.6 pentastar so I just have it done whenever I get my spark plugs changed. I don't do that myself because it requires removing the entire upper intake just to get to it but thankfully it only needs to be done every 100,000 miles

I used a pair of Hose players that fit perfectly around the silver stem and was able to just pry against the edge of the valve cover and it popped right out without even damaging the PCV valve

..however, your method it is every bit a help, way to go buddy. Something very important to mention, the reason I am attempting to replace it on my 05 T&C, aside from the norm, I need to change it bcuz my brake pedal is hard, boosters need of vacuum isn't being met. This pcv valve, if it locks in the open or closed position, tends to give a certain type of problem. Mine is, although brake booster tests ok, when driving, brakes don't have that nice power touch when you apply the brake. And yes, system has been bled, etc.

You da’man! I have researched most of the videos and your’s is the best! The only thing that I might add is that some people used a penetrant and heated the bolt and/or removed it while the engine was still hot (seems like the rubber grommet is softer and easier to remove when hot). The most drastic was taking the cowling off and removing the valve cover! Prior to 2004 they used metal valve cover with a screw in PCV valve. With the plastic valve covers they went with the grommet style.

Good job, thanks! My 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan has 151,000 miles and thank God also runs like a champ… and I haven’t had a car payment in 10 yrs, so I want to keep it running well. Some of these vehicles made in Canada turn out better than those made elsewhere. I hope mine will continue to run for a long time.

That's the way to do it! I drive 50k miles per year, so these vans used only last me 3 years tops usually no matter what I do.

Make sure when installing the new PCV valve that you insert it deep enough, there should be about 4mm from the top lip of the grommet below the hole. Use a little oil around the PCV valve grommet and a socket on the top of the valve to wiggle it down.

Oh this one was fun. The way they fail is the rubber separates from the metal body, which makes it free spin as well as pass oil, the thing falls deeper into the orifice, and then you are done. Properly fitting PCV valve will have the part number flush with the surface. Failed one will recede below surface and be a major pain to remove. Was replacing an engine and noticed the new engine had oil in throttle body, which tells me the PCV is bad. On my old engine, the PCV was basically like new, so pulling it out was easy. I put a washer on top of plastic and used hose pliers on the stem, broke the stem off, then pried to make it start to come out diagonally. That allowed me to put the screwdriver in and basically break the rubber into two. Top rubber came out, then it was easy to pull out the valve body, and finally a side pry to remove the remainder of rubber ring. This is very easy to do with engine out. Else, be sure to take off the wiper cowl.

what type of symptoms was it having why u replaced it? I have a 08 T&C and I smell exhaust inside the van or oil also burning. I do have an oil leak somewhere but I cant find it.. so im wondering if it could be the pcv valve or valve cover gasket. im so confused with what to attempt to do 1st

The junk in the air filter doesn’t restrict the airflow nearly as much as the fine particulates embedded in the filter media, and the vacuum won’t get those out. Toss it and get new.

I'm not saying to never replace the air filter. What I am saying is that you can suck out a lot of the junk and probably get about double the life out of it than you otherwise would.

Thanks for posting. I tried using the bolt and vice grips and it is a fail. There is no place on my 2004 T&C to make a wedge work. It's a 3.8L but is missing that tab you used. It's going to limp into the shop, a $300+ repair. Such a poor job of design. I've replaced PCVs myself since the beginning of time.

Some FYI, for all who may need to do this again, Or see and read these comments; Remove the wiper cowl gentlemen, its much easier and its what everyone should do when changing the rear spark plugs, Or Anything back there.

That's pretty intensive for this. It involves removing the Wiper arms. I've also changed the plugs a few times just reaching back there. I couldn't see, but I didn't need to.

Mindbeauty no, but it does have 300k miles on it. Mostly leaks oil. I put about half quart a week in, but I drive a lot!

I feel like you are asking the same question I have right now a year later. My wife's van is losing oil with no signs. nothing on the garage floor and no abnormal exhaust color. What did yours wind up being since Im guessing you solved the problem.

I'm a few vans past that one at this point, but in general I get about 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway with these types of vans.
