Peaceful Watcher was completely ruined by the Judge and that plot line. The face reveal could have survived by being that twist that makes the Watcher even more disturbing. Because he seems like a harmless every man when he’s clearly not. But the Judge business is really pure garbage.

I wish the Watcher had had a more explicit addiction (and some of the warranted self-loathing to go with it), so in going back over and over witness several important murder clues he’d be forced to come clean to a “friend” in attempt to keep them safe. If I wrote it, he’d chicken out, go to vlog about it stupidly nearby and be confronted and humiliated then idk. Murdered on the way home, at his absolute lowest from having his delusion of friendship crushed by one of his attractive victims lol

I don’t think strangers approach someone taking photos or videos of other strangers and ask them if they’re filming. All the acting is horrible and the judge character is ridiculous. Normally, I’ll go watch the original if it’s not too scary. However, I think this is the first time I won’t watch bc looks too crap. Edit: it’s the 2nd time. The 1st time was the guy that met with someone over margaritas and i think his uncle was a bad guy and wanted him to follow.... This series makes me want to see a series made from the perspective of a stalker but their victims are participating in a more cliche unfiction series. Getting the outside perspective of some creep while the people he stalks are dealing with some kind of operator/slendy scenario. Like, the victims start freaking out cause their boogeyman is doing something spoooky and the stalker gets all nervous thinking that he's been found out or something. Idk I think it could make for a funny meta-type thing for the genre.

@Emirl Sanchos I actually do this more often than I read good shit. Does it muddy up my own writing due to my influence being more bad than good? Definitely, but it gives me the confidence to say I have the ability to write because I can see glaring flaws and issues in other works, and can rewrite them to (at the very least) make more sense within the given context. I have a folder of about a hundred .txts of certain scenes from books, movies, and (mostly) games that all just rewrite scenes into ways that fit better into the story or make more contextual sense, and it feels great to say “what I just made is probably better” lol

When you first brought up how unoriginal the Judge's mask was, I was thinking, "Someone should try to do something creative with one of those customizable LED masks", and then my heart sank as the brown-haired woman showed up with one, BUT it was using the default preset built into the mask with the Xs for eyes and toothy grin. So many areas where a little bit of extra creativity would've gone a long way.

Ah, and as to your mid-video question: As soon as I saw "The Judge" I rolled my eyes and groaned so, so hard. This was a character that didn't need to be shown, didn't need to be seen. Just experienced through the character we're already following. But no, they had to "ToTheArk" it, to coin a term. He's this series' ToTheArk, or that...whatever society that was following the guy around in Tribe Twelve, just...an antagonist that shows up with cryptic messages poorly scrawled on something with the quality of a 3rd grade art project. Edit: Ah, you called him ToTheArk too, nice. xD

Phenomenal how they took a genuinely cool concept, i.e: Seeing something horrible unfold from the perspective of someone else doing something horrible; and turned it into the corniest most milkwater unfiction piece. Yeah. I mean it started tanking on the 'are you playing the game' and then like. I lost all interest when he denied the stalking (that chick catches him). Because the concept of him just being a naieve childlike person/creature who thinks they're his friend wouldn't have denied filming them. Denying it shows guilt and an understanding of wrong doing. Which just makes him an edgy stalker

This was actually good until the Judge introduced himself, what a shame to see what couldve been a cold case murder mystery ARG turn into "bad man will fin u and go stab stab". It'd be so much more interesting if this series was more of a voyeuristic thriller where the stalker learns some kind of dark secret or connection between their victims, or maybe they even already knew about that stuff to begin with, hence why they were being stalked in the first place. Look, I'm no writer, but that'd be something kinda new or different to the online storytelling formula at least.

I feel like the face reveal part could have gone so much better had they done a seperate channel where Luis just uploads Volgs of his life outside of being a stalker - or an intagram or twitter where he can talk as him - not as The Peaceful Watcher. If he really has a child-like mind, this would have been explainable that he never thought that someone would make the connection between the two accounts.

Here's the story I would have gone with, having heard this whole thing: Get rid of most of it. Obviously. START where this person's "friend" died - or maybe not even a friend, maybe a person died in a weird way and somehow this guy got obsessed with it - and it was a trigger to start stalking the family members and loved ones of that person who died. Have our protagonist be this person who is so delusional that he thinks he's coping with his grief in a healthy way and relating to the people he's stalking. Throw out the "judge" nonsense and just have it be these people slowly realizing they're being stalked and dealing with the fear that brings. The scary part of it could be our guy starting to try to communicate with them, maybe sneaking into their houses to find memories of the person who died, real things like that. I want to feel some real cognitive dissonance between the positive words he feeds us and the awful actions we see him take. It's fine to do an unreliable narrator with this main character presenting himself as good even though we know he's bad, but he needs his comeuppance in a LOGICAL and satisfying way. I mean, for sure tase him eventually, but earn it in a way other than "Man, this dude's an annoying asshole."
@KrissyBlues
@KrissyBlues Жыл бұрын
So like, early on into the series it presents the idea that stalkers are commonplace in the town and the different subsects of them imply that it's a cultural norm within that community for these groups to organize, coupled with Luis referring to Josh as if he's complicit in this. I feel like the series would've went a lot better if it explored the pipeline a niche subculture like this causes. Luis would start off as a "Peaceful Watcher", who is fascinated by this objectionable thing but keeps it under the pretense of a moral code, and then gets absorbed in this community of likeminded watchers who are going much farther than him and pressure him into escalation. It could even potentially go full in with the "watching a horror story from the POV of the monster" angle by making him do incredibly reprehensible actions like breaking into the homes of his victims or even kidnapping one at the encouragement of other "watchers". The plotline of Luis himself having a stalker could even be kept, but it would be so much better if his stalker was someone inspired by his youtube who's become obsessed with Luis because the parasocial nature of watching his videos on youtube is producing much the same feelings as Luis' stalking of his victims. So, so many layers upon layers of commentary could be provided from a point of view this distorted and unique, it's such a shame almost none of it is used past the first act.

A long time ago I had a supposed ''friend'' who was feeding information about me back to a guy who sexually assaulted me because she thought he was innocent and wanted to give him ammunition against me in the upcoming police case. About 3 months later, by random chance, she acquired a sexual stalker. Luckily she wasn't hurt, but it was a good case of karma. I also had a stalker for about a year that I called the police and they investigated. He claimed that I was ''bullying'' him and seemed to legit believe it. All the while sending me r**e and death threats. He was so stupid that one day he sent me a blackmail letter containing his name, address and bank details saying he would stop the threats if I paid him. And he *signed* it by hand, with his own signature hahahahaha. The police had a field day with that letter

I agree with you, in that 'the Judge' is a really weak premise. The "Judge" should have been a mysterious presence whose face we never see, whose voice we never hear... not even with a mask and audio filters, and who never even gives himself a title or name. He should have never appeared in first person onscreen... the death threats were unnecessary; I think it would have been scary enough, for some unseen presence to just leave small, creepy, but obvious 'breadcrumbs' that make it clear that he is stalking Luis from the shadows. BUT, I honestly think Luis choosing to show his face isn't a bad choice. I think the idea of the 'stalker who ends up a stalking victim' is a pretty clever idea... I can imagine Luis continuing to watch people, believing HIS actions are harmless... so he doesn't even think he might get in much trouble, if he were caught; so he happily shows his face, as if to say to 'the judge' that., "Unlike you, I'm not hiding, I'm not ashamed"-- Utterly unable to grasp that he *should* be ashamed.

I always feel bad about my reactions to some unfiction. I'm still fairly new to the genre (mostly thanks to you), so the jankiness, and suspension of disbelief are a real struggle for me. I recognize the layers of creativity behind them, and admire the efforts in many. But then the story or the acting falls flat for me, and I just can't get into it. Your feelings of the judge are exactly how I was feeling. The mask, the movements, etc, were just so.... counterintuitive to how the story was trying to present him. The watcher really felt like someone with a neurodivergency that kinda knew his actions were not acceptable, but really didn't see the harm they would cause. The lack of self-awareness, should have stayed only with Luis, but instead, the Judge, and other characters are at that same level, making me think this is not a character issue, but a creator issue.

The thing about unfiction projects is that they are virtually always extremely small in scale, in terms of production/moving parts (often the overwhelming majority of content is starring, filmed and produced by ONE person), and as such, the project really needs to be designed around the creative strengths of the individual(s) running it, instead of trying to do things that other people have already done better. This is clearly an example of a creator NOT centering their unique strengths in the project.

This is kind of a silly critique to make, but I couldn't help but be completely taken out of it whenever Luis would curse while speaking to people face to face. I think his original presentation as so childlike and guileless had me thinking he'd act a certain way irl, and when he didn't it's all I was concentrating on. It could have been a cool little character beat to have him speak to others like he does to his video audience, but as it was performed it just felt like there was an unintentional disconnect between the two. I do agree I think a series where we follow a stalker whose proud of it and starts to uncover story lines from the people he watches could have been so interesting. They could have had a moment where they reveal the twitter handles (or something like that) of one of the victims and then we as the audience have to decide whether we try and warn them or not say anything so we can keep watching. And then if there was this second stalker character too, that could have really added something, like you said we see the Watcher get a task of his own medicine. Side note I love that Clayton is only mad about being stalked because the camera's cheap- he wants a stalker who puts more effort in to thier set up apparently. Also also when Nightmind laughs I picture him as a rich aunt drinking wine

this project feels a lot like the amateur ‘short films’ i used to make with friends to pass time over the summer. the execution isn’t great, but the story has good bones and there’s obviously been a lot of love put into it. you can really tell that the people behind this had a lot of fun making it, and, as a fellow creative, i love to see that. a lot of people get so caught up in making their work ‘good’ that they lose the passion that should be driving them and end up making lifeless, hollow work. personally, i MUCH prefer a series like this that’s fun despite being cliche/campy/kind of bad to something technically perfect but otherwise stiff.

As jank as it was, I do appreciate that they stayed true to their creep-o main character, and had him refuse to learn his lesson no matter what, to the point of literally stalking people while being given death threats from someone who knows who he is. That's exactly the sort of compulsive behavior I'd expect from someone like that. It's just too bad it was wrapped in so much cheese. That said, I feel like it would've probably felt more cohesive if so many parts of the series hadn't been lost to bit-rot/privated videos. Doubt it would help the cheese, but it would've at least made more sense.

Your comments about creators taking hiatuses and completing their projects in a timely manner exactly encapsulates my feelings about the direction of the Dad ARG. It's been going for over 2 years now and there seems to be no end in sight. Although there are regular uploads to the channel, it's nothing related to the ARG plot lines. Ever since iDubbbz creator clash boxing event was announced it's just been about that/ Matt Watson/ other sporting events. I know that Dad's ultimate goal is to be the best KZbinr, but I certainly hope we don't have to wait for him to be number 1 in sub count or something for that bc holy crap will this project ever end in that case? I know it's not related to this ARG, but what you said really made me think about that. I hope that the Dad ARG actually sees an end sometime soon.

This series is the only work of fiction I’ve ever seen that perfectly recreates the emotional experience of discovering Chris Chan and going down that rabbit hole for the first time. I feel like the cringey “Judge” character is meant to be an ironic twist on the kind of people who see themselves as the “protagonist” in this situation, taking themselves way too seriously with flowery, over-worded prose in their monologues about how they’re going to exact righteous judgement on our quasi-anti-villain. So our protagonist is a bad guy and our bad guy sees himself as a protagonist, and both of them are equally insane. I’d be willing to bet the string of murders are completely unrelated to the “judge” guy and he’s just larping and trying to “game-jack” whatever is actually going on there. That would be an amazing twist that would be in line with the subversions of genre we’ve seen thus far.
@DeadHatzGuy
@DeadHatzGuy Жыл бұрын
You're half right actually! I didn't have the foresight to really think of the judge as an ironic twist type villain as I made him as someone who's judgement was blinded by their need for vengeance. He is a person who knows who he hates, and feels justified and therefore does think he is 100% in the right, but as I stated before he is blinded by his need for vengeance. And you are correct the murders were completed by a third party, and not the Judge or his "Court" And the Judge blamed both Luis and the original killer "Joy" for the murder of Hector. As much as I enjoyed the creation and writing for Peaceful Watcher I can't help but feel as if I "dropped the ball" overall. But I don't regret its creation one bit. Thank you for your interest in the series!

It could have been such a power shift for one of the stalking victims to "unmask" Luis to his audience. I found myself hoping Clayton would do it during the physical altercation to continue the hunter becomes hunted storyline that was so present. Then, we could get the juxtaposition of seeing the human behind the camera without the disbelief that he would share his face and full government name while committing crimes.

Kudos to the people behind this project! It takes a lot of courage and effort to put together this kind of unfiction, and put it on the internet for everyone to critique. Most people never even get that far 🤷🏽‍♀️ Main critique: show, don't tell. A lot of the exposition could have been delivered in more visually interesting and engaging ways that really would have gone a long way to draw the audience in and create more buy in. Potential Improvements: I would have loved to see the idea of the "guilty bystander" explored in more depth. Using the audiences disdain for the watcher could have been a powerful critique of cowardice and exemplify the idea that evil isn't just "doing bad", but also failing to do good. I think this project had some good foundational pieces, but just lacked a nuanced understanding of visual storytelling, narrative structure, and a clear purpose/message/direction.

I think it could have been a cool concept to have the audience watching the "peaceful watcher" filming his victims, and the story that unfolds is us watching the victims figure out who their stalker is from the stalker's perspective. Sort of a reverse of the usual stalker stories, where instead of the question being "who is stalking me", the question is "how will they find the stalker". ETA: And bringing in the second stalker who stalks the watcher, then you could have questions like "is this stalker working with the victims to give the watcher a taste of his own medicine? Is this stalker a former victim of the watcher?" Also, maybe expand upon that bit on the flyer we saw that discussed different types of stalkers: given than "peaceful watcher" is its own sub-type on the flyer, that means there must be enough of a community of peaceful watchers to have their own noticeable differences from other stalkers. ETA2: Maybe even continue the theme of "if you're witnessing something wrong and don't say anything, you are complicit" *to the audience*. After all, we are watching along with the watcher. Why should the audience's own hypocrisy go unpunished?

I will say that the premise was actually interesting. Following a weirdo as they stalk people is a interesting one that could get you into the head space of people that do this kind of stuff. The whole Judge thing is where stuff goes off the rails and falls in a ditch. Even with the Clayton reveal it still doesn't work. So he deemed Luis guilty for accomplice to Hector's murder and then decides to kill him. Then why the trials and the story time? It seems he held genuine hatred for the murder of his brother so why not torment Luis until the end? Even on the idea of torture it doesn't make much sense since a better torture for Luis would be killing those he saw as his "friends" like in the later attack on George. Which causes a weird mix of emotion when Clayton is beating on Luis. Knowing that Clayton essentially killed George, a victim in all of this just to cause Luis pain. It feels like a way to draw a comparison of Clayton and Luis. In they both are murders for selfish reasons. With Luis for his inaction in fear of his own wellbeing to Clayton's action in pursuit of harming Luis emotionally. So when the beating happens I don't feel any catharsis of watching Luis get beat just the feeling of one bad guy hitting another. In the end The Judge is still a murdering psycho and the reveal of it being Clayton just gives him an actual motivation outside of "likes to murder" Still doesn't make him anymore interesting however.
