thanks for covering this, Nick. 10 tapes was, in terms of the amount of time, energy and passion I put into it, a pretty monumental project for me, and it truly feels like a bookend to be featured on Night Mind. Another thanks to those of you who've commented with both praise and constructive criticism. I'm an advocate for transparency, always sharing the process of creating and that we're never done learning how to be better storytellers, and will gladly answer any questions and/or thoughts anyone might have on any aspect of 10 tapes. The drive for narrators to keep filming out of paranoia is one of my favorite things in ARGS. They did it beautifully in Marble Hornets, and they're doing it fantastically here. I think what really makes this one special to me is that it’s the first to really go in on the meta-ARG component. 10 Tapes intentionally plays on the fact that we’ve seen this all before to make it less frightening, as we can trust this is just some creepy person playing a lot of this as a “fun” project. H is involved b/c he thinks it might be entertaining, and he’s curious about it. And his curiosity is killing him now; he took a step off the trail and now he’s lost in woods. He opened the box, letting out whatever was inside. I think a lot of the Slenderman stuff back in the day played with this component somewhat, esp. Marble Hornets, but there is a horror in the idea that you can unintentionally get yourself into something that you can’t get back out of. Jay, in that series, just wants to look at the old tapes of that film project that never finished, and by doing so ends up drawn into a terrible fate that can’t be undone now that he’s in. This series really gets at that, directly, and in a way I’d hoped to see a series do it, by playing into the fact that horror ARGs we can all play along with are around all the time. We’ve grown accustomed to seeing them, and their spoopy-doopy tricks. But…what if one of them was real, and all it needed to get to you was for you to just play along. Until it’s too late. You’re caught.

I was just thinking the other day "I haven't seen a NightMind upload for a while. I hope new content is coming, I need some quality storytelling and spooks." Lo and behold, here you are with something truly spectacular. 10 Tapes is surprisingly refreshing for how much it uses the same narrative beats we've come to familiarize ourselves within the realm of unfiction. I genuinely did not expect the story to feature paranormal elements, I was so sure this was gonna go the same tired route of "main character did bad thing in past Gamemaster is torturing them over as punishment." I'm glad I was wrong and I cannot wait to get to the latter half of the story. I only hope 10 Tapes sticks the landing and gives us a satisfying conclusion after such a brilliant climax.

Holy crap was that last part creepy! It truly was a rug pulled out from under us! Watching this when you asked what was the cause of the sleepiness it truly made me think "Was that truly drugging or was it actually paranormal activity?" That put doubt in my mind about this situation because you showed us that one scene of the person in the window and based on how it was shown it definitely isn't possible to stand that far away at that height without using a ladder. It definitely planted the seed in my mind of it possibly being a paranormal event! Man you make me love this ARG!

Thanks for this, Nick! Also, just to add this 'cause I didn't see anyone else talking about it. What happened to Kitty Genovese is what sparked the idea of the bystander effect; basically an entire apartment complex heard what was happening, and none of them really did anything. To the point that her attacker got away, and then was able to come back. The bystander effect being applied to unfiction is really unsettling imo (also Cory Wong is a real dude, and his music is real cool! He's also a part of Vulfpeck. 10/10 would recommend both)
@charadeslondon2 жыл бұрын
Bystander effect has been disproven though. If you actually look into the reality of the Kitty Genovese case, there were witnesses who did something, including reaching out to the authorities. We know the case because people cared. It's similar to the Stanford prison experiment, which was incredibly flawed. Sorry for the rant as it's not directed at you. I just know that many people don't look further into these things. I know because it took me a while to learn how they were false. And there isn't anything inherently wrong with using these common myths to tell a story, especially a good horror story.

Just a note to any future ARG artists out there: the scratchy black scribbles are so overplayed that they have about the same effect and are just as scary as putting a sheet with eyeholes on your head and going "OOOoooOoOooOoo!!" Want to be more believable (which is a crucial component of suspense and fear)? Make the writing look like someone actually just wrote it normally, casually even, as just another step in their sinister little game/plot/thing, rather than making it look like a sixth grader's Halloween party invitations. The heavily-contrived nature of all this, coupled with the maximum level of suspension of disbelief I'm capable of upholding here, leads to the overall feeling that the ACTUAL goal of the stalker is to make fun codes for people to crack. Like those "Hunt a Killer" game boxes you used see advertised all over KZbin. And as such, the suspense is gone (for me, at least) because there doesn't seem to be any real danger. Don't get me wrong; the sheer amount of work and detail put into this project is impressive! I hope the creators do more, and can improve on the, I guess you'd call it "atmosphere" (?) or believability-factor. You get what I'm saying here. (Also, I'm only halfway through this video as of writing this. If things change, I'll come back to eat my words!) Edit: Currently chopping up my words and dumping them into a giant Spoketoosoon Casserole. I'll be over here in my Stupid Jerk Corner eating my shame and waiting for part 2. 😅

You were absolutely correct though. It was tropey, and walked lines we've seen so many times before. We just got blindsided by the writer doing that on purpose. We were led down a road of "Oh yeah, totheark, I getcha" but it turns out the demon, ghost, or whatever it is, just wanted H, and so us, to feel comfortable in that assertion. A masterful misdirect, that worked on you like it did me and most of the rest of us
@IronBoy-hf2lp2 жыл бұрын
The sucker punch of a "HA! THOUGHT YOU'D FIND THIS A LITTLE CLICHE" is ALWAYS welcome. Legitimately got the same punch from seeing it here- you just don't *expect* it when it's so subtly hinted, and yet in retrospect there's beautiful little hints beforehand- such as X standing way too tall to be in that window normally, and that tape slipped into his backpack and yet whoever's left it has slipped off into nowhere way too fast. And also, walking way too damn quietly in the See No Evil portion.
@EmileeAria4132 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly agree with your first point, the scratchy scribbles are slowly reaching immersion-breaking levels in ARGs. The game master shouldn't write like that naturally, that scratchy style of writing is the writing of a person who has succumbed to their madness and spends their days scrawling their single obsession or mantra or whatever on pages and pages. That kind of person would be physically incapable of setting up any kind of game like we tend to see that use this hand-writing gimmick. Game masters should feel calculated but unhinged, insane enough to think doing this kind of thing is fun, but mentally sound enough to design the game in the first place. All that said you're edit is also correct. I was not expecting the "FNAF VR" plot line of collecting the parts of the monster to make it strong enough to manifest itself fully. To be clear, I really like the twist and everything about this series. Gonna watch the rest that Nick will be covering in part 2 on my own time now, I'm completely hooked.

There didn't even need to be a monster, because we were already becoming concerned for his wellbeing, yet eager to see where the game was going. If it had just continued as it was, it would have been good enough, but the big reveal takes things in a whole new direction!

I just absolutely LOVED that live stream scare! THAT is horror!! I love the puzzles, the interactivity and everything about this ARG, and the Climax was- an ACTUAL climax! I didn't think they would kill the main character before the end and I think that works in their favor! Great video as always too Nick, I love seeing you cover Args especially when It's one I've been following a bit myself!

I will tell you this much. There are a lot of ARGs being done. I will find it interesting when eventually someone does a series, everyone thinks it's an ARG, but then everyone finds out it is not an ARG. That will really grab some attention. I predict that will eventually happen. That definitely would be twisted.

the line in the message at 29:08 "A few people laughed, A few people cried, Most people were silent" is a line from J. Robert Oppenheimers "I am become death" speech. Not sure if this is of any importance but it was just a reference I noticed.

8 minutes in, and I already... that's quite close to some actual VHS tapes I picked up from thrift shops. WAIT... that last chunk of footage, with the literal physical person standing in the what-should-be-closed-off-room... was a LIVESTREAM??? I literally fucking sleepwalk, I will cook full meals while unconscious. And could not record that shit on KZbin if I planned it.

The paranormal drop at the end was pretty delicious to think over. The whole time it just seems like some guy playing detective with the Riddler until all the invasive inconsistencies reveal something that should not be able to manipulate the world in the way it does

i had just finished your tribetwelve explained- the last slenderverse series i needed to watch from you, after mh and emh- the night this came out. i’ve been marathoning that stuff for the past few weeks slightly sad that pretty much everything was at least two years old, and now there’s something new that i can actually follow! (edit: after finishing this episode there is a wonderful sense of suspense and excitement that couldn’t be felt when i could trust that you already had the next video out! your stuff is amazing sir and so is the stuff you cover, or at least the way you cover it, thank you)

So I'm so happy your still doing stuff , its a weird feeling when you find a KZbinr when they have so much content already and don't update too often , I just JAMMED your content for a year and then didn't have anything for like 3 months but when you came back I was so happy

this series seems to prove that sometimes the best scares aren't just a jumpscare with a loud noise. It's built up slowly, with twists and turns like the root of a tree. Every horror series that Nightmind covers is done with so much dignity and does every series justice. I love every upload!

It sounds like a point of critique to make the puzzles too complicated, but I think that's to be expected. Online ARGs are still a limited medium mostly produced by and for analog horror fans, so it's only reasonable to assume that variety will also be limited until more content branches out from the genre their success was built on. That means it's probably the brain-teasers that keep media consumption in the community active past the height of Slenderman series.
