What’s infuriating about hearing this is the polices response when you call “well, we can only come if you are in immediate danger” One of my exes stalked me for months, and somehow gained entrance to my building and was using tools to try to break in through my door, AND climbed the 19 stories of scaffolding outside the building to try to come in the window. I freaked out and all the police said was “well, is he inside? We can’t dispatch anyone unless it’s an immediate threat” I screamed at them like “so you want me to call you once it’s too late?!?” It’s impossible to get help when you’re being stalked.

While I understand that it might seem like a bit of a reach, is it possible to reconcile the two interpretations? For instance, as has been mentioned many a time here in the comment section, "mentalist" appears to be common British slang. Yet at the same time there's much operating in the story, both in terms of the straight narrative as well as meta aspects, that seem to lend themselves more to the idea of the mentalist profession. Is it possible that there was an actual insistence on this particular piece of British slang, common though it might be, in order to serve as a kind of subliminal signal? Like, it's taken for granted by the audience at first that it's just a common slang term, but in reality it has a hidden meaning? Much like how the series presented itself as a vlog series and then revealed there had been much grander designs behind the whole enterprise?

I saw a theory in the comments of the last video that J. Watts killed his wife, and was then attempting to adbuct/kill Lou because he thought she was finding out the truth about the murder. The hauntings are all Margaret's ghost, trying to warn Lou of the danger and get her out of the house. That's just one theory though; there's so much to unpack in this series.

@ForsakenNoble

This is still my theory of choice as well
@gggthsb
@gggthsb 3 жыл бұрын
But why would there be a danger to be found out to begin with? The only indication of Lou finding out about Margaret is after she found the wallet, but the hauntings started way before that. Why would the husband start to haunt Lou before she even suspects anything? It would make more sense when the stalker came after she found the wallet randomly in the house or garden. The husband wants to get rid of her before she finds out and Margaret starts trying to warn her. Also there would be many other ways for Margaret to warn her without scaring her to death. I don't think that is the case here. I much rather believe that whatever is trying to get Lou (or actually got her in the end) got Margaret before when she and her husband lived in that flat.
@ForsakenNoble
@ForsakenNoble 3 жыл бұрын
@@gggthsb I can def see that too, but the idea at least for me initially was that in the beginning, there was no stalker, and it was actually a ghost, Mags, trying to connect with Lou. But, upon even just thinking about it now, I do think your theory is more correct, though I still don't think that initially the stalker was a real person, so much as an early premonition.

I mean, that happens in reality, too, although maybe less in a major city. My mom lives in a small town, and the police close up shop after dark. When someone broke into her shed to rob it, she called 911 and got the police's answering machine. =(

Yeah, they have to have these plot devices though or most of the stories wouldn't work. Whenever I've ever been present for a police being called in they are usually there in a minute or so. It is kinda crazy how fast they are. Not sure if they'd be faster or slower in a big city. They have more crime there so maybe uncertain or smaller things get cast aside more or maybe there are so many police there isn't much of a difference.
@ThanatosMist
@ThanatosMist 3 жыл бұрын
Its not that unusual actually. Especially with stalker cases, the police tell you they can't do anything until there is evidence, they commit a crime, or harm you. There are a lot of cases where people are murdered because the police did nothing. Also there are sometimes neighborhoods where the police just won't go even if there is a call there or they purposefully wait hours to go to so the crime is already over. When you look into crime, especially crime involving stalking or rape, it is truly unbelievable how incompetent and insensitive the police can be. There are advocacy groups that have talked about how its not uncommon for police to discourage a rape victim from reporting or make rather disgusting comments

The reason so many people keep bringing up the mentalist thing is quite simple: Night Mind bamboozled himself with a red herring of his own that likely wasn't an intentional part of the story, especally since there's no hints Louise's freidns were doing much more than being oblivious to their friend's problems.

We don’t have our cats indoors all that much in the UK- unless the cat has been injured and is recovering, is too young to be vaccinated and spayed/ neutered, or *has just moved house*, most people had cats that went out all day and came in at night until quite recently. I only knew really posh cats like Bengals and those cute hairless ones that look like Mew/ an embryo that lived indoors until the pandemic.

This genuinely scared me, especially seeing the website, but once I figured out it wasn't real, I was both relieved and upset because I, along with quite a few others as I understand it, really believed in it and was very, very concerned for Louise. But it is so brilliant to look back on in the light it's meant to be seen under. I was watching this with other teens at my school, talking about it every upload release. And now I see it as it is - brilliantly acted and staged. I'm amazed Zoe Richards isn't more famous for this and other things she's done.

I don't buy the idea that her friends are ignoring her because they know/think it might be a bit of performance. My take on that angle is that it's part of the thematic undertone of the story, which is about social atomization and alienation. She moved to a new location, faces something horrible, and can't rely on her old support network because as soon as she moved away they stopped caring about her.

Another thing I noticed while watching the videos was the date format used in some of them. Louise used the American date format (month-day-year) instead of the British format (day-month-year), which I found to be a simple error but one that kind of killed immersion for me. Really wish there would have been some kind of continuation on this story; I would love to learn more about the history of the flat in the story.
@tobysinbad

I use both- because of telly being American, and bc so many important dates are discussed in the American format- e.g. 9/11 is not referred to as 11/9 over here bc some people can’t cope. We can in fact get over the month coming first when saying a date. The actor is clearly British

To me, this could be Margaret's ghost. There was a blond woman (like Louise) in the family photo in her wallet and J, the husband, didn't seem very interested in his missing wife's wallet turning up. He could've told Louise to turn in the wallet to the police. Could he have had an affair with that blond woman from the photo? J did seem to react when Louise asked him about South London. It's possible that this is where he was meeting the blond woman. Now, if Margaret found out and caught them there, maybe things went wrong and J ended up killing her and burying her in the garden Louise is so proud of (hence, all the dirt). It would make sense then that when blond Louise moves in, Margaret's spirit sees her as that blond woman from the photo and wants revenge. Now, the only thing I'm not sure of is where do the coin and shoe come in. It's possible that alongside Margaret, the place has had a fair share of deaths and hauntings as well.
