Hi Dean. I was the one you met near Kinder Gates. I was a bit surprised and forgot to introduce myself properly. I'm Tim, and my mate is Karl. It was nice seeing you out and about. It was such a great day to be out. I love Kinder, my dad first took me there when i was about 6 and i keep going back, but this weekend we're off around Bleaklow.Enjoy your travels, and i look forward to seeing the videos :-)

'You can keep your FA Cup Final'... 'And your Royal Wedding...' lol, absolutely. Another great video, thanks Dean. I've spent many holidays walking Wales, Scotland, Yorkshire and Norfolk (where I now live) but have somehow never visited the Peaks (!). Finally, aged 54, Airbnb in Buxton booked for 22nd August and me and family really looking forward to it! Will try out a number of your filmed routes. Thanks mate.

Lots of work has been done by Moors for the Future in recent years to retain water up on Kinder. I remember it being drier too but now there are lots of mini dams holding water back. Hope you have more luck with the weather next time Malcolm. Thanks for watching

Ah what a lovely route. Last time I was up on kinder for a walk we went up to the official summit. I dont remember the single clump of grass though, we just had a small black stake and a few stones. According to my mates watch though it was 636m :)!!! Love your videos and keep them up, Ben
@DeanRead6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, thanks for watching. I initially thought in a previous video that the pile of stones was the official summit but when I got home and did a bit of research I found it was the grass clump. Strange really how it's not very obvious. There was a stick with a little flag on the clump on my last visit but it was unmarked this time so wasn't very obvious which one it was, I had to go by memory and a GPS waypoint I had in my viewranger app. All the best, Dean.

Great video. People often mention midges but living in Florida, USA, I have googled the term but do not know how it affects hikers and campers in the U.K. The internet did not mention how prevalent they are during their season. Like your videos.
@DeanRead6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Almonte. The midges in the Peaks are usually pretty bad June to July so I always pray for a bit of wind when I camp as I hate the little beasts. They are unbearable in Scotland too. All the best, Dean.
@beatbasher6 жыл бұрын
Their bites itch like crazy, just a single one is irritating enough but if enough of them get you then you feel like your skin is practically burning. They tend to disappear after dark and if the wind picks up. They are often highly concentrated swarms especially around water and more sheltered and vegetated areas.

I think I'll be finishing between Christmas and New Year. I wanted to end on Kinder. I can't run it but I'm fit enough. I've never been up there in Winter. I know Snake's Pass gets cut off but is it still doable? Appreciate any input. Love the vlog Dean.
@DeanRead2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks for watching. Providing the Road is open you should be able to tackle Kinder Scout from the Snake Road. Much more fun from Edale though, it’s a bit unremarkable across the flag stone path via Mill Hill from the Snake. Enjoy 👍

Thanks for this inspiring video and sharing the beauty of Kinder Scout! (I have just come across your videos). I am curious about the route from Kinder Downfall to Crowden Clough - I haven't done this bit before, so any tips for doing this would be welcome. Is it only practical when the river Kinder is low? Is there much of a marked path beyond the Kinder Gates, and, is it easy to follow a bearing using a 'conventional' compass, with all the clambering in and out of the groughs there? Anyway, keep up the excellent work!
@DeanRead6 жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian, thanks for watching. It is a pretty tough route to follow without a compass or following a route on a GPS. There aren't any paths really and the ones that are there become really faint not long after Kinder Gates. I think you could follow a bearing from the gates and get over to the top of Crowden Clough ok or maybe to Pym Chair, climbing in and out the Clough's will make it pretty tough at times though. Good luck and thanks again for watching. All the best, Dean.

Grinds Brook has two hidden waterfalls near the top. Majority of walkers will continue to follow the path to the top of Grinds Brook. But if you turn right once you can see the scramble to the top (at about 500 m). Then on your left you will come across two water falls which are great from climbing. Just follow the steam back to the path.

I knew all that area very well when I was living in Nottingham in the 1950s However, in those days there were no 'paved' or well marked tracks, most navigation on the tops was by compass and 'local knowledge'.
@DeanRead3 жыл бұрын
I'm lucky enough to remember the days before the paved sections. I remember how boggy it was and how damaging all those foot prints were to the moorland as the paths got wider and wider. Although it makes the landscape a little more sterile having the slabs it certainly makes a difference from a conservation point of view and for that reason alone I'm grateful they are there. We were out walking this route for 6hours 20mins. I've done the route from Edale to Marsden via the Pennine Way and there is a lot of climbing involved. 27-28 miles is doable in a day but it would be a big 14-15 hour day I'd say with all the climbing.

Thanks for watching Peter. It's great up on the plateau, really enjoy exploring up there. I'm on a plant based diet yes, can't call myself vegan as I have leather walking boots etc and there is a lot of stigma in that word so I haven't mentioned it online really... Dean Read . As a vegan for almost 4 years I understand the stigma in the word . I do try to avoid leather etc but my massive downfall is that I sell fish and kebabs for a living. I don’t publicise the fact that I don’t eat my own produce. But there are definitely health benefits.

To be honest, Dean, I was feeling really peed off when I wrote that comment! I think my favourite part of Kinder Scout is the, perhaps lesser regarded? eastern side as the mountain, where it peters out towards Win Hill. I do like Rushup Edge and the promontory with the trig point on it near Rushup Edge, too, though, on the other side of the mountain. Now being very obese though, I can't walk 40 yards down the road without getting out of breath! With Best Wishes! Cheers - Mike.
