Thx. It is not clear how often exchange take snapshot to check the peak margin intraday. Sebi need mandate to the broker softwares need to be capable and smart enough to detect this margin deficiency intraday at random and warn customer ahead giving oportunity to avoid it. Purpose of Sebi doing this is to avoid broker give intraday leverage thereby risking retailor money but this hefty margin put on retailors is as good as retailor loosing with leverage and sooner or later Sebi need relook at a better way of implementing it instesd of hurting the same retailor it is trying to protect..problem is brokers are organized but retailors are unorganized and takes long struggle for thier voice to be heard.until then we are Guinea pigs

Trading without penalty is rare, there is no broker on earth will leave you when there is an oppurtunity to charge.. they will jump on every chance on their favour and charge trader/investor

Sebi has clarified that penalty is to the Brokers & NOT to customers. Sebi has instructed that wherever such penalty is charged by Brokers to their Clients, it must be returned immediately

I got this issue recently, I don't even understand how it is a shortfall, I will explain my case. I had 100 shares of LIC HFL in my demat account, I sold 75 shares in the morning @393 and on the same day in afternoon, I re purchased 75 shares of LIC HFL @390. I got a message saying that I am having 1000 rupees peak margin shortfall and they charged me 12₹ as peak margin penalty. They have charged me 1% plus gst even though shortfall was 1000₹. More importantly, I am not understanding how it can be treated as a shortfall of margin, since I am selling my own shares from my demat and purchasing them on same same same qty , this is basically a intraday transaction, where is the risk and where is the shortfall, is beyond my understanding.

20% of the sale value is blocked for the day if you have initiated delivery based transaction and this 20% will be available to seller the next day after the delivery of shares is given to exchange. So margin penalty. Possible alternative is to initiate intra day sell transaction and sqaure off the same before eod.

@@rohitbhatt4991 actually the reason for selling from demat is to be safe , since I am selling hoping for the price make minor correction and then square off, but suppose mkt moves against me and price increases then here I am under no obligation to buy back the shares on the same day since it was sold from demat holdings, if I do an intraday transaction then I need to square off same day whether profit or loss.

@@anujoybardhan After initiating sell trans. If market goes against you, you can always convert your intra day sell position to delivery before end of day. All brokers provide this facility to convert intra day to delivery and vice versa.
