Thank you sooooo much. This is the BEST concise explanation of orchestration I have ever seen. You have answered so many of my questions of how to de-mud string sections. Would love the same thing for brass and woodwinds. Thanks again.

Thank you Bobby. I will definitely consider making videos on other sections, even outside of the orchestral scope. Music is such an amazing and infinite language that there is always more to learn. I know this, because I am still a humble student of music every single day...and I hope to continue learning so until the day I leave this world. =)

Nice video and it will sure help those starting out to get their feet wet. Just one thing to point out with your sus chords. They normally resolve down to the third or tonic. In rare circumstances, they can resolve up, but that rarely happens. Looking at your examples they do not resolve properly, which is a bad habit to pick up when you are starting out.
@mikaelbaggstrom3 жыл бұрын
Good call Adrian! I should have pointed out that out. =) Even though I personally often jump to another chord with any resolvement at all ;)
@AdrianEarnshawMusic3 жыл бұрын
@@mikaelbaggstrom no problem, they just have a sound of being unfinished. The same rule applies for 7ths and 9ths in that they need to resolve downwards. It's all part of the rules for classical harmony and makes your chord sequences sound complete.

Mikael , tell us please what plugins beside Aflattus do you use for every track in this great piece of work of yours. I'm gonna buy them all. Thank you very much!
@mikaelbaggstrom3 жыл бұрын
Haha, nah don't buy too many shiny things at once. I know it's always very tempting. ;) I don't have the project open now, but if I remember correctly it was: Cinematic Strings 2, Afflatus Strings, Damage, Action Strikes, Forzo, and Palette (choirs).
@TheBelphegor13 жыл бұрын
@@mikaelbaggstrom Hi Mikael , I already have the KOMPLETE 13 ULTIMATE Collector's Edition wich comes with the Action Strikes , Dammage (and beautiful Symphony Series among many other things) , I already bought Dammage 2 and I intend getting The Cinematic Strings 2 and Striiiings anyway (your review convinced me). As for the other 3 , I think I'm gonna get Palette - Symphonic Sketchpad because it has male and female choirs because if my Mac's HD misses anything that's a good choir library. All my life I've been a piano/keyboard/vocal performer (single , duo , trio and in a 7piece band) , I performed (almost) all kind of music on different venues including weddings... corporate parties... night clubs..., but this past year made me think about alternatives including being a producer and I'm buying all kind of software (and some hardware). Thing is , I wish I was a fraction as "handy" with all this software and hardware as I am as a musician! Anyway , your WhyLogicProRules videos helped a lot. Thank you very much and all the best to you.

Awesome video Mike, thanks! There's one aspect of music theory I've never seen covered in KZbin videos I stumbled upon. It's the relationship between melody and accompaniment. For example if a string chord is held for 4 beats while a xylophone plays 4 different 1 beat notes, would the melody typically try to stick to the chord's notes or should the chord use the same root as the first xylophone note or maybe not root but any of the chord's notes? Or maybe something like that but on beat 4 and not 1? I did experiments of my own on this and found some interesting "rules" that work for me, but it's still somewhat of a mystery to me. Music is art and pretty much anything flies, but at the same time there are patterns average listeners are more familiar with and that's where I could use experience from others. Would one of your courses cover this? I'd gladly sign up for that topic.
@mikaelbaggstrom3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eric, and yes as you say, "there are no rules"...but guidelines are a good starting point. I will consider making a video on Melody vs Harmony. =)

@mikaelbaggstrom3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Álvaro! =) Logic Pro has many great synths and effects. But sadly the stock sounds for orchestral and "real" instruments sound crappy as you say. The bad news is that the professional sample libraries which I use will cost you a lot of money. But hey, I have a good tip, start with the free ones that actually sound good. Check out this video I made on Free Orchestral libraries: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naqbmKWGqq-cbsU
