Thank you, André, for what was a timely video as I too have just decided to dispense with my Vario topbox. I found it barely able to accommodate my helmet even when there was nothing else in it, and it's so ridiculously heavy too. Like you I've fitted a luggage plate (SW Motech) and I've also replaced the pillion seat with an SW Motech cargo platform. I use Kriega soft luggage when required and, so far, it has worked out very well. I'll be interested to see how you get on with this new setup. All the best.

Sounds good. I would have put a luggage plate on the pillion seat too. Except, last time I tried it, and strapped a bag to it, I can still hear the laughter of people watching me trying to get off the bike after riding an hour longer than I should have done. I managed it in the end, but it did make me appreciate the joy of just being able to swing my leg over, or back!

Thats a good change-up for sure not only weight savings, where its mounted up high that counts. Looks allot less bulky too.

It is. 12kg high up (with the pannier change) is enough to feel the difference, even on a GS!

You look healthy enough. Those expandable BMW top boxes are brilliant. Dry bags: just buy a cheap one from an outdoor shop. They are all the same.

Thanks! I felt healthy enough too. Two days of a tickly cough then nothing. Positive tests for six days though. I have family members undergoing treatment at the moment though, so I need to be careful for that.

12.5 kilos weight loss is certainly significant. I think it was a good decision to loose the top box. I’m ready to do some moto-camping, and some soft luggage on my KLR would be very handy. Happy Trails

It has made me reconsider my CRF… I think I have a lightweight alternative to the OM upper crash bars which would save 5kg or so on that bike. We shall see.

@@PeakMotorcycles Very good. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I don't know why no one seems to make gear sack / ventura sissy bar racks for GS's, they are so versatile. If you ever want experience speed wobbles, leave a gap between yourself and your top luggage, anyway first thing I did when buying my new GS was buy a plate, those standard racks are stupid.

Indeed! The only thing the top rack is good for is the OEM top boxes... my 2013 LC 1200GS came with a vario top box, and I've been using that on each bike ever since. It's been great for commuting, less useful for touring and it is heavy. The flat rack seems a better solution for saving weight and practicality.
