I had an issue with the cheaper Lun wheels where a mould split-line had not been filed down on the outer edge of one of the rim hooks. After around 1500km of riding on some GP5000s that sharp edge wore through the side of my rear tyre and then failed pretty catastrophically in the middle of the ride. Luckily it was just the rear wheel so it was easy to come to a stop. Got in touch with the Winspace rep. in the UK and got them fixed at no charge and sent back with a replacement tyre. Not entirely surprised to see that sort of defect on a relatively cheap carbon wheel, definitely not ideal and possibly scary if it had been the front wheel, but the customer service was really quick and responded well to it. edit - Also worth noting that the rep. said that they had never seen an issue like that before on their wheels but would look out for it on new wheels going out. So likely a 1-off issue.

Enve actually supplies NTN bearings on both their alloy road hubs and the cheaper "foundation" hubs. The preload is done by a wave washer and a snap ring, only time will tell how well it works. Done about 2000 km, weather-proof and still runs smooth. Noticable drag when you twist them, likely from the contact seal. Also they have a link to a Hambini article on bearings on their webpage explaining why they don't use ceramic bearings. A step in the right direction.

So how much play does the wave washer introduce, can you feel it at all? Unless I misinterpret the design it seems like it must result in some, although it could be miniscule.
@ILOVEDEFENDINGTHE1PERCENT3 жыл бұрын
@@jaro6985 I couldn't feel any play at all when applying lateral force with my hands and while riding. I can only assume the compression applied by the wave washer is quite well tuned, but that is just my experience. With all the stress, deformation and compression that occurs to any bike parts while riding, a tiny little play is unavoidable. But yeah like you said it's miniscule, likely won't even feel it while riding. Then again it's only 2000 km, I'll see how it holds up after 8000.

As soon as I see a small specialist company experimenting with details like the freewheel ratchet, I suspect they are overestimating their abilities. I had an A2Z wheel, with ratchet failure. It looked as if they had specified the wrong springs, and the springs were over-stressed as a result. The repair kits were expensive, when they were available, but they were not, because the hub had been out of production for too long. The crux of the matter is that that hub was nearly new- relatively. It was still on its first rim. Shimano freewheels last 10x as long. Shimano probably has 10x as many engineers working on freewheel design, as these boutique brands have on the whole wheel. Those one-man bands are servicing one big arrogant delusion, if they think they can out-engineer a firm that sells a million freewheels a week, which cannot afford to make schoolboy errors.

2:50 I might not be a genius but I would think a lighter wheel would "spin up" faster than a heavier one. I don't see that descriptive phrase being inappropriate for a wheel review? It's quite logical really, if something has more mass it's going to take more input to get it moving.
@incognitoyoutubename18283 жыл бұрын
He says that carbon wheels have low inertia and it is all on the outside. Yes a lighter wheel would spin up faster(proportional to how much lighter it is), but given that differences in rim weight between high end carbon wheels are relatively low (10%) in practice no one can tell the difference. Because it is rotating weight this only matters when accelerating(only a couple of seconds). Spinning up might only matter if you’re a pro sprinter but even then I would argue because it is rotating weight what you gain when kicking with a lighter wheel you mostly lose at the end of the sprint when trying to maintain top speed.
@shibaburn77253 жыл бұрын
It's not that lighter wheels don't spin up faster in isolation, but the energy required to do it is negligible compared to that of accelerating the bike with the rider. A toddler can spin a wheel up to speed with a flick of their hand.

Have you seen RCA/Cam's winspace reviews? He thought he had spoke rubbing, even tried to tie together the spokes or something... it all turned out to be needing some grease in the freehub, or too much grease, can't remember. Intentional or not, reviews of products can be horribly misleading- for the good or bad. I appreciate your full disclosure and trying to explain everything, while keeping it interesting. Thank you!

Shocking. If that was me, I would have filed a claim in small claims court against them because I purchased a *WHEELSET* and not a set of *WHEEL BEARINGS* and a wheel with wrecked bearings is defective and isnt fit for purpose or its intended use and Wiggle should deal with it otherwise they are infringing upon the sale of goods act. I would call them, speak to supervisors, managers. contact them via social media, Email them, call them up on the phone give them multiple chances to correct the issue and if they arent willing to play ball - Just let them know you intend to file a claim against them. Its a lot of faff yes - but even if you paid £80 for a wheelset (I know the Prime wheels are £500-600'ish) Thats a fair chunk of money for them to slam the door in your face after your over and I honestly would go after them for that and extra cash as compensation for the time out of my day spent dealing with them when it should have been a simple fix. Its akin to bullying them. But you shouldnt have to bully them to sort something out that should be covered by their warranty.

@thomaslutro55603 жыл бұрын
One of the most common issue with wheels, unfortunately. All caused by the lower NDS tension not giving enough friction. I don't see anything in the design of the Winspace that would make them more prone to this than others. Qiute the contrary, in fact. The two DS spokes per NDS spoke gives a better tension balance left to right, and should make them more stable in this respect (like for example Campagnolo/Fulcrum).
@PeakTorque3 жыл бұрын
As Thomas mentioned. Many wheels suffer from very low NDS tension due to the design of modern 11sp hubs (meaning the DS spokes are a lot straighter thus have a much higher tension for the same lateral force component). The NDS has a wider bracing angle, so needs a much lower spoke tension to center the wheel. With the carbon spokes this problem is compounded by very little inherent stretch in the spoke (vs a thin steel one) so they are more prone to coming loose. I believe winspace have recently modified the head of the spoke and nipple to prevent turning and increase the face friction, but you'd need to ask them to clarify.

This is because my rear axle is 17mm in the centre but tapers to 15mm in the freehub which needs a bearing 15x26x5, whereas the 6803 is 17x26x5. My freehub is labelled SMN 11s v2. So what's going on? The bearings I have are thicker outer race to fit the 26mm yet they have a seal labelled 6802 which is 15x24x5. Very confusing, the bearing shop said when companies make custom bearings they often use standard seals, hence the wrong label. Winspace just sends me engineering cad drawings of the hub which clearly states 6803. I should add that I've watched Hambini's vid and he says 6803 as well but doesn't mention anything about the axle size other than 17mm. So do I have a v2 axle with a v2 freehub? Any hints would be helpful, thanks

Did you end up figuring this out?
@marcbryant84822 жыл бұрын
@@NeonGrayEdits yes Winspace were awesome. Turned out my wheels had an older campag axle and custom bearings fitted to make it work with Shimano freehub because there used to be a slight difference. They sent me a new entire hub and I swapped out the axle, bearings and end caps. Works fine

Do you have any advice whether to get the 50mm (1455g) or 65mm(1608g) version of these Hyper (disc) wheels? It's super flat where I live. Right now I'm riding Roval CL50 wheels (1515g, 29.4mm external width), which compared to the non-aero wheels I was riding before feel a little bit sluggish when accelerating. Unfortunately Hambini only has data for the 50 mm version of the Hyper wheels, so I'm unsure if the aero-dynamic advantage of the 65mm is worth the small weight penalty. Or would any aerodynamic or accelerating improvements be so small, that I should rather keep riding the Rovals?

Hi, I’m standing at the same question. Did you find the answer for yourself?
@ilja29472 жыл бұрын
@@AdventurismPk There is a review of the 65mm Hyper wheels on the Hambini KZbin channel. He suggests to go with the 50mm, because the minor aero gains of the 65mm set are not worth the slower acceleration and increased wind impact.

Sorry that I'm a little off topic here. I'm currently building myself a set of 50mm carbon clincher rim brake wheels, and I've decided to go with radial NDS/2X DS spoke lacing on the rear wheel (24 spokes). I'm just at the spoke tensioning phase, and I'm a little worried as the spoke tension is so massively different between the DS and NDS. I'm at maximum tension on the DS, and barely at minimum tension on the NDS, and I'm starting to think that I should just re-lace the NDS to 2X because the tension feels so low. Should I be as worried as I am about this? Thanks, and I really love your channel!
@jaro69853 жыл бұрын
Give some numbers. If you have 130kg on DS, its normal to have 60-70% of that on NDS. Do you have a spoke tension meter? Used spokecalc or dt calc?

I'm the happy owner of a pair of winspace hyper 50 rim brake. After several days of riding in heavy rain that creaking started. I removed the cassette body. The pawls (is that the name of those 6 or more things?) Dry like and old bone. I greased them and it went away. But I have a question: the big ring that goes between the hub and the casette body has different sides. What way is correct? Johan

Looks like you tested these wheels on a TCR (2016-2020 model?). how was the clearance with the 28mm tires? I’m surprised you got them to fit. Do you think a 25mm would be better? I’m thinking about getting a pair for my 2017 TCR but I’m worried about clearance.

@shibaburn77253 жыл бұрын
Are the dropouts aluminum? Many carbon fiber bikes have aluminum dropouts, and it's not an issue with those bikes. If the dropouts are carbon fiber, the answer is "it depends". If the bike was constructed with quality resin, and the faces of the QR don't have any nasty ridges, it should be okay. A good epoxy resin should have a compressive strength of around 120 MPa. The max clamping force you can generate with a QR is around 4,000 N. If you assume the surface area of the QR face is 25 mm2, that would be 80 MPa. That's not much of a safety factor though. I would advise sticking with the manufacturer's quick releases, and inspecting the dropout area every time you remove the wheels.
